Howdy all,

Your Friendly Local Community Manager here to introduce this week's Developer Diary! While it was not my article, it was written by our ever mysterious Content Designer, CC! So sit back, relax, and enjoy some neat new features from the team and we can't wait to hear your thoughts and feedback!

Without further ado:

Greetings!

Let’s talk about artifacts and the systems surrounding it.

Artifacts can be divided into two categories, inventory and court, which is also where the items are stored. This dev diary will focus on the former one, so the inventory.

Inventory system​

Feast thine eyes on the inventory screen! Instead of putting all of the goodies into a big pile, we’ve made an inventory window showing what’s currently equipped and how many of each category you can “wear”.

Equipable artifacts fall into the following categories; crown, regalia, weapon, armor, and lastly, trinkets. Most of these categories speak for themselves but trinkets, so what are they you may ask? The answer is a myriad of things; they can be brooches, dried flowers, even a worm on a string.

You can also sort after these categories, making it easy to find what you’re looking for when you want to equip, repair, or just browse your inventory.

In the Artifact Details, you can read the artifact’s history, as well as see what people are claimants. Watch out - some of these people may be looking to steal the artifact away from you…

Of course, it goes both ways! Did your stupid brother inherit the family heirloom? You can duel, declare war, or steal it — as long as you have a claim.

Artifacts wear down when on your person versus when they are on display in the court. So keep that in mind as it can be costly in the long run to equip everything for the bonuses if you're not making full use of them.

Since the Antiquarian is such a vital figure in maintaining and making full use of your artifacts, there’s a shortcut to recruiting or just looking at who has that position in your court.

As shown in the image, the Antiquarian unlocks the ability to Reforge and Repair, as well as Commissioning Artifacts.

Commission Artifacts​

Inspirations are fickle like creativity, so if you have the gold and you want something commissioned, you can get in touch with local artisans through the Commission Artifact decision.

An additional benefit of commissioning an artifact is that you get to decide what’s being made.

Now you might wonder, “why would I ever subject myself to the whims and possible long time for a person to become inspired if I can just go to the local artisans and get what I want?”
You see, even if inspirations appear as fickle as love during springtime, it’s that little extra spice — a creator’s passion — that permeates through the final product. It’s that warm feeling of love for the craft that the beholder can feel just by looking at it, it’s something that’s not always present in a commissioned piece.

Ah, my apologies, I appeared to have been carried away there for a brief moment by my muse.

What I meant to say is that in gameplay terms, that means that inspired people can create artifacts of higher quality while the commission artisans will do the bare minimum and therefore be of the lowest quality.

Does this mean elective titles that pass through several dynasties, if the primary title of the recipients, will scoop up the artifacts of those houses into one pile that goes with the primary title? If you're, say, the Holy Roman Emperor, but someone from a different dynasty is elected the emperor and you go down to King of Bohemia or whatever, will you lose all your artifacts to the new Holy Roman Emperor?
Or vice-versa, that the Reichskrone shown in the dev diary will usually be held by some random HRE count because it stays in the family even when they lose the election for the throne.

They haven't said anything about it but I find it a bit much that they wouldn't have something in place for that, at least I hope.
Well, they said, "Artifacts go to the Primary Heir on succession.", which I think means that the opposite happens - all the artifacts stay with the emperor, like Tuo said. I just wanted to point out that, if we go the other way, and let the artifacts go with the Player Heir, then we get all sorts of problems like with the Reichskrone. It seems like the only way to handle both cases is to be a bit more fine-grained, but it sounds like we won't be getting that, and being elected emperor against your wishes will be a complete catastrophe.

The elections really began later than this period, or so it was explained to me by an HRE enthusiast with a masters in that period of history.

That would kind of defeat the purpose of the barbershop and character designer though.

That would kind of defeat the purpose of the barbershop and character designer though.
Not necessarily. A sword, for example, would not be affecting anything you might set in barbershop - and this could be potentially showing only when you have it set to default, so if you don't like armor, set it to something other than default and no armor anymore. If I'm equipping a crown, I most likely want to see it on my character - but it can still be overridden.

This looks really cool! But I’m concerned that some features are being locked to royal rank (e.g. inspirations, and the Royal Court itself). I wager there are a lot of players who enjoy playing as dukes and don’t immediately aim for rushing to a kingdom. In that sense I’m feeling that this DLC is leaving those gamers out, and that Paradox only wants us to play as kings. I understand the principle of progression in an RPG, but Crusader Kings isn’t just an RPG. Locking players out of important features just because they don’t want to be kings is rather unfortunate. Still, keep up the great work! I hope these rank requirements are moddable, at least for the players.

I understand the principle of progression in an RPG, but Crusader Kings isn’t just an RPG. Locking players out of important features just because they don’t want to be kings is rather unfortunate. Still, keep up the great work! I hope these rank requirements are moddable, at least for the players.
They have mentioned before that, if you are not independent, you can join your liege's court - or, at least, that was my impression.

Will the equipped artifacts be visible on the character models? I've always hated equipment in RPGs that didn't change their appearance.
They said weapons will show, but nothing else. However, placing a crown for example on display in your court, it will show up then. However, considering we have such a great mod for clothing and jewelry already out there (Community Flavor Pack), I have a feeling it will be possible to mod in a way to check if you have a certain artifact and change your clothing/etc based on that and it can probably make use of all the great artwork provided by the mod. Quite possibly it will be available as part of the mod in the future, though I am just guessing about that.

Great update! But I have a small problem with artifacts. With the information I have available, stealing others artifacts is kinda unnecessary unless it's unique, the player doesn't have one or they're roleplaying. Because legendary artifacts have the same stats like for example the holy roman emperor had a legendary sword but its not unique as it's stats is the same as any legendary sword. There's exceptions like maybe? Excalibur?! Or something. So here's my idea to make artifacts you or the ai made... somewhat unique. This suggestion is not that good and maybe op? So take this with a grain of salt. Okay so you made a masterwork dagger that became legendary through multiple murders you have committed. And the dagger gives you 3 intrigue and over time... somehow improve? Unless broken the artifact gradually improves... by it's legend becoming bigger? Idk. I don't have any better excuse. Every 50 years or any amount of time the devs want it to last, the dagger gains 1 intrigue. So if the dagger is made in 868 somehow... the dagger has... 14 intrigue... maybe make it 100 years and we have 8 intrigue. That's somewhat not op.

Well, they said, "Artifacts go to the Primary Heir on succession.", which I think means that the opposite happens - all the artifacts stay with the emperor, like Tuo said. I just wanted to point out that, if we go the other way, and let the artifacts go with the Player Heir, then we get all sorts of problems like with the Reichskrone. It seems like the only way to handle both cases is to be a bit more fine-grained, but it sounds like we won't be getting that, and being elected emperor against your wishes will be a complete catastrophe.
While not perfect. I could see one solution be to have crowns and regalia follow the primary heir and other artifacts go to the player heir.

Even better would probably be for all artifacts to go to the player heir, but have some artifacts tied to a certain titles and follow it on succession (so the HRE crown could go to the next Emperor, your player heir gets most of the artifacts, but your second son who is now King of Italy at least gets the Crown of Lombardy). The only problem is I don't know how feasible this is.

Yeah, it'd still be weird that if the King of Bohemia won and then lost the HRE election, the crown of Bohemia would remain irrecoverably in the HRE treasury. The Emperor would just accumulate an endless pile of crowns and regalia as the game progresses. But it's better than the currently proposed system, which is honestly just absurd. Being undesirably elected Emperor is already so common and so frustrating that players make mods to avoid it. Making that experience even worse by deciding that you should lose your entire treasury if it happens to you is ridiculous. Hopefully this is just a situation where the developers didn't realize the full implication of their design and have time to fix it.

I recognize that handling this in a way that generates reasonable outcomes is complicated, but this is a system that's being designed from the ground up for this expansion. Now is surely the time to get it right, not lock the game into a flawed system for expediency's sake.

There's also the matter of what happens to artifacts in a case of revolt - I recall in CK2, unique artifacts such as the Reichskrone would often get lost irrevocably as the holder was deposed in favor of a claimant, kept the crown, and died landless with no one to inherit the artifact. One would assume that if the figurative crown is claimed at a sword point, the actual physical crown would go with it - unless, of course, the previous ruler escaped with the crown (and possibly other regalia) in tow, but even in that case, it would be preferable if they didn't disappear in a hole so easily.
