CK3 Dev Diary #57 - An Eventful Summer

CK3 Dev Diary #57 - An Eventful Summer

Hello everyone!

I hope you’re enjoying the warmer days, and that you are looking forward to hearing a bit more about the free patch, Azure, that we’re releasing this summer.

Before we get into the meat of today's Dev Diary I want to clarify something regarding the Azure patch; it's being made by a smaller group of CK3 devs in a Strike Team setup, which means that not everyone on the CK3 Dev team is working on the patch. We hope that we'll still be able to address quite a few of your concerns, but we won't have time to address everything. Still, keep sending us feedback, as it helps us prioritize!

This dev diary will focus on one area of the patch and as a Content Designer I am – unsurprisingly – here to talk about events and such. More specifically I am here to talk about some new content that we’re including in Azure, and joining me in this dev diary is one of our new Content Designers: Isabella! As developers we all have areas of the game that we would like to expand upon and flesh out a bit, and two areas are now getting some love: childhood and lifestyle events.

Childhood

Children always want to grow up fast, and no child feels this more actually than the one that just inherited the entire realm at the mature age of six. Oh woe, what can a young king do to pass the long days ahead until he can scheme and murder to his heart’s content? Play with other young rulers, of course! Azure includes a new activity for children called Meet Peers that will make childhood more interesting and full of experiences.

gathering.png

[Image of the start event for the Meet Peers activity]

Meet Peers is an activity available for children where they can gather all young rulers and courtiers in the realm to just play and forget about the dreariness of life as a child in medieval times. All participants will lose stress and increase their opinion of the host, and the children attending the playdate can find themselves in fun and educational situations!

Of course, there may also be any number of less… wholesome consequences from bringing that many children together.

playing_rough.png

And if socializing just isn’t your thing and friends are easiest made (and killed) through schemes we’ve also reduced the age restrictions for Sway and Murder slightly. All to enable you to live out your scheming rule from as young an age as possible!

Lifestyle events

Or, if your children just can’t wait to grow up, you could let them try their fate fighting against grown soldiers in a tournament. In this patch, we have a couple of new lifestyle events coming your way, including the Tantrum Tourney event chain for Martial Authority characters.

‘Hym repented that he came there!’ - 14th Century Romance Richard Coer de Lyon on grown dukes and lords regretting each moment as they get impaled by a lance manned by an adolescent child.

A trope of romances detailing the life of Richard the Lionheart likes to exaggerate the dates of his reign to present him as a King who was a child monarch. This seems to be done almost exclusively so he can be presented as perhaps the greatest demon of a child who ever lived. Child Richard is shown ordering all of his noblemen to fight him in a tournament - on pain of death, and beating everyone who turns up to a pulp.

Will you allow your baby’s first bloodlust to be unleashed upon your knights, who certainly did not sign up for this?

Keep your eyes peeled while your character is studying their Lifestyle! You might see a few new moments cropping up. Especially if you have war elephants… but what are you doing if you don’t already have war elephants?

That’s it for this week, thank you all for reading!

Can we expect a way to re-name children of our dynasty when they get named something they weren't supposed to like we had in CK2? You could edit a child's name up until it was 6 years old, which was awesome, I'd love for that to be in the game again.

This and regnal/coronation names option. G.E. I could have born as Qwertyslaus but if became Byz Emperor I would want to be known from then on with some more true Roman name as Tiberios, Konstantinos etc...

CK3 Dev Diary #57 - An Eventful Summer

Hello everyone!

I hope you’re enjoying the warmer days, and that you are looking forward to hearing a bit more about the free patch, Azure, that we’re releasing this summer.
I surely hope that you have not forgotten us who are entering the fall season in the Southern Hemisphere. Yes, CK3 makes it even down here.

As far as the other announcements, I am happy to get more events. They are fun and enjoyable.

Sorry, you'll need to wait 6 months for the patch to work for you. Also, you'll need to play it upside down.

I always love childhood focused content. As much as it's a small part of the game it feel really different and refreshing to have to play a child character every then and now.
One of my best CKIII memories was when my child character got a childhood crush event, but sadly the girl was already bethroated (then married as she was older) so as soon as I could I planned to murder the guy, then I also had to murder the duke at whose court she went to live because he didn't want to accept my marriage proposal (and she liked it too much to move to my court). Really sweet memories when I finally could marry her though.
More flavor like this is always welcome.

Only issue with this is that in a few hundred hours of gameplay, I think I have had one child ruler. It’s very hard to die of anything but old age in this game at the moment.

This looks neat, but we need to address GHW AI, especially Crusades. I love this game, but a big point of it is the Crusade mechanic and everything that goes with it. I assume it's a complex problem, and I understand that, but it needs attention. I can't think of many more disheartening and frustrating things then:
  1. Join Crusade - Oh wee 35k allies lets go.
  2. 20k actually show up.
  3. Pope shows up for a battle then heads back because a random Orthodox Duke decided to DoW him.
  4. AI utterly refuses to reinforce.
  5. You and allies proceed to get mowed down.
  6. Rinse and repeat for 5 years until Crusade is lost.

Part of this is driven by the absolutely questionable decision to remove AI army orders from allied armies, for sure. But more than that, how is it that Crusade AI is worse in an expansion? Really not great.

Worst of it is one ought to largely ignore Crusades and just declare own King-level Holy Wars. Because guess what? Same faiths nearly never join said wars to protect others of their faith - Again, highly questionable in implementation.

I love this game. But the above is truly an eyesore in what is otherwise an excellent pastime.

WHY  IS THERE  STILL NO  CK2 NOTIFICATION MANAGER
Before we get into the meat of today's Dev Diary I want to clarify something regarding the Azure patch; it's being made by a smaller group of CK3 devs in a Strike Team setup, which means that not everyone on the CK3 Dev team is working on the patch. We hope that we'll still be able to address quite a few of your concerns, but we won't have time to address everything. Still, keep sending us feedback, as it helps us prioritize!

Maybe you will find your answer if you read the first relevant thing the dev had to say.

That shows me exactly how Paradox is prioritizing the addressing of all the QoL and other issues in the current game - by putting a smaller group of devs working on it. I hope that @Heptopus was referring to their physical size rather the number of people in the group.

That’s it for this week, thank you all for reading!

All this looks good. The problem I have with those events is that they somehow tend to get triggered in bulk whenever you go to war. It gets really annoying dealing with all the pop-up windows while trying to lead your armies.
