CK3 Dev Diary #56 - An Azure Summer

Greetings!

This week we have a few announcements to make! Firstly, as you saw in the last diary, we mentioned the number 1.3.X - this is the version number for an upcoming patch that we’re aiming to release around this summer (of course, the ‘X’ part will be an actual digit when it’s released, but for now we’ll just have to wait to see what it’ll be in the end!).

As you already know, we tend to name our patches using heraldic terms. The Northern Lords release had the name ‘Corvus’ for example. As we’re hoping for clear blue skies this summer, we’ve dubbed this patch ‘Azure’!

The Azure patch is a free patch, and there will not be any paid content coming out at the same time. It’ll focus on improving the stability of the game, fixing bugs, adding Quality of Life, balancing various systems, and adding some small features requested by the community. We’ll not go into many details in this diary, instead you can look forward to more info in some of the upcoming Dev Diaries!

Until then, here is a first teaser of some of the improvements that you will find in the patch:
  • War Declaration Window: The war declaration UI flow will be revisited in order to better highlight your opponent’s strength and the different objectives available for a given Casus Belli
  • Starting Men at Arms: Rulers will now start with a contingent of Men at Arms, depending on their income and culture. Default Men at Arms will also be generated when a Character is landed for the first time.

We hope to release Azure this summer, before the vacation season (the summer vacation usually starts late June and ends by the end of July) - but depending on how our plans work out, it might release during late summer.

***

Another thing we’re actively working with is improving Multiplayer stability, although this is separate from the upcoming Azure patch. We’re currently collecting as much data as we can, and it’s a process that’ll take time - at this point we’d not want to release the improvements as a patch.

Instead we’re aiming to release an Open Beta on Steam where you can get access to some of the Multiplayer stability improvements early. We highly recommend using this Open Beta when playing with your friends. This version of the game will have extra Multiplayer logging enabled, so that any remaining issues can be found more easily. As a side effect of these additional logs, the game will run a bit slower both in multiplayer and in singleplayer. If you notice the slowdown, you might want to switch back from the Open Beta for your singleplayer sessions. More specific info will be posted as the Open Beta is released.

This Open Beta will be available sometime in the near future for Steam users.

***

Now, as most of you have already figured out, the first big Expansion will be revealed during PDXCon in May! We’re looking forward to then, and to be able to share more details with you!

During the week of PDXCon we’ll have a DevDiary where we go into some detail about parts of the Expansion (we know that you’ll be hungry for more info after seeing the show!). After that diary, there will be some more Azure patch diaries before we start writing further Expansion diaries - just a heads up, so you know what to expect!

I'm quite sure that it is indeed only a problem with larger groups of players. Played some games with 4 people and barely had any problems. But then another game which included around 10 people was almost unplayable due to constant desyncs.

Yeah, sadly the bigger the group is, the more desyncs and/or disconnects happen in CK3.

I'm hoping that changes soon. Because a game like Stellaris for example runs perfectly fine with even 30+ players now.

It’s not even hard to get out of partition within a generation or two atm, which is the only real hurdle for power at the moment imo.

I would welcome some more roadblocks to stop you from becoming an empire within 2-4 generations. Perhaps a much more intricate dealing with the lower nobility and peasantry/burghers, though without feeling grindy or min-maxy
I agree. The game is currently too easy after you gain your first kingdom. After that it is only waiting for casus bellis so that you could blob all your neighbours one at a time. There is no real danger since neighbouring realms usually tend to use only county claims which are super easy to replace. Civil war is also easily avoided if you remember execute enough heretics to keep dread at 100 all the time.

I would personally enjoy if paradox would give more emphasis on civil war mechanics. Civil wars should sprung more often between feudal lords and their liege over the matters of the state and the war should have more impact for the future of the state. AI should revoke land (like one county) from every rebellious lord and give it ti loyal subjects that sided the liege during the war. If rebels win they should revoke some land from the former liege and loyalist lord and divide land between themselves.

I think civil wars should also come more as a suprise. Personally I think that secret factions would be great addition to the game. Secret plotters could gather support for the pretender like in normal factions but in secret. Secret factions would be more trickier to handle for the player since player cant murder faction leader from the faction that player is unaware. Secret factions could also pose more threat to players reign since player is unable to prepare for it.

I love civil wars, especially claimants one (it create interesting stories). But the game is so easy when you're king or emperor, that you have to create the situation for them to fire. In one of my game I paused my expansion for 40 years, stopped using dread and put royal authority to 4 to enjoy 20 years of instability (and only one war was really challenging). I would love them to add one or two features to give more flesh to these wars (even dressing the claimant/usurper like a king/emperor or giving them a temporary regnal numbers would add something to the story).

1.3.X - this is the version number for an upcoming patch that we’re aiming to release around this summer (of course, the ‘X’ part will be an actual digit when it’s released, but for now we’ll just have to wait to see what it’ll be in the end!).
Just to be clear - does that mean that there might be an unspecified number of minor patches/hotfixes until then, right?

The Eastern Roman Empire ("Byzantines") are really one of history's biggest and most interesting what-ifs, especially during this period of the game. I really hope they're the focus of this expansion and get the depth in flavour and mechanics they deserve.

I want the ability to manage how many men-at-arms and levis I raise on one flag location. So I can choose to raise for example one siege engine Men at arms unit and 10k levis or several units of men at arms and only like 7k levis. Today I use raise all on a flag location and often it raises too many levis while I wait for my men at arms to arrive, I then have to dismiss several levis which may take a long time to raise again if I need them a bit later or at another location.
