CK2 Dev Diary #95: Amending Africa

Greetings!

We’ve shown you plenty of map changes already, including updates to Russia, Scandinavia, and most recently Italy and the Alps. But surely, we couldn’t do all of these wonderful updates without looking at the continent that deserves it the most, right?

So let’s have a look at Africa.

You read that right. Africa is finally getting the love and attention it deserves! Northern Africa and Mali have long needed an update. Where counties resembled squares and rectangles more than anything else. But no more!

Let’s start with the northern kingdoms. The kingdoms themselves remain the same. Only Mauretania has been renamed to Maghreb, and has along with the kingdom of Africa been placed in the Empire of Maghreb. Mainly to break down the very large Arabian Empire slightly. On the county level, every single county has been repainted in order to place them where they should be and give the borders a much more natural feeling.

All in all, the new provinces and additional holding slots will make North Africa stronger than before. But to offer additional protection against aggressive Holy Wars from the major powers of Europe, we’ve increased the number of sea zones slightly in the mediterranean. The stronger realms of central Europe will now have to first conquer their way down to the coast of Iberia, Southern Italy, or go through Mallorca or Sardinia, before they will be able to reach the shores of Africa. This should give the realms in Africa some time before the Europeans attempt to make their way onto the continent.

As for Mali. The area has about twice the number of provinces compared to what they had before. This in turn allows for more than just the lonely kingdom of Mali to exist, which has been split into the three kingdoms of Ghana, Mali and Songhay. One kingdom for each of the major powers that inhabited the area during the timeframe of the game. They’ll all still be part of the empire of Mali, which is finally no longer the only empire with a single De Jure kingdom.

Updating the existing parts of the map is not the only thing we’ve done for Africa however. Kanem-Bornu and the region around lake Chad is now on the map as well! The area consists of the two kingdoms Hausaland and Kanem. These consist of three and four duchies respectively and together form the empire of Kanem-Bornu. So not only do we get new rulers and titles to play with, but it allows both east and west to move across the continent without always having to expand north and, usually, through a Muslim blob that more often than not forms in Northern Africa and Arabia. Instead, you’ll be able to cross Africa through Ghana/Mali in the west, through the Sahara and the Fezzan corridor in the center, and finally through Wadai and Abyssinia in the east.

Let’s not stop there though.

To make Africa more distinct from other regions, a second trade route has been added to the game; the Trans-Saharan Trade Route.

It requires either Horse Lords or Jade Dragon to be unlocked and functions very much like the updated Silk Road from 2.8. There is however, a certain twist to it. The base value of the trade route is very low. Granting next to no bonuses to the counties it passes through. What you need to do in order to benefit from it, is to control certain locations along the trade route and construct unique production buildings in established trade posts. To be clear though, these are merely special buildings within the trade posts just like you would upgrade a trade post on the Silk Road. These buildings represent some of the trade goods that historically had a large impact on the trade in the region. The most important of these will be the Gold Mines.

There are two Gold Mines located on the map, both of them in the kingdom of Mali. The Gold Mines will allow Mali to amass great wealth. Just like they did historically. If you would prefer to do it differently and take the mines from them, conquering Africa will very much be worth the effort. Not only will Gold Mines greatly increase the value of the Trans-Saharan trade, it will also grant the owner a large bonus to the county’s income. There will also be some flavour events that can trigger for anyone owning them.

Remember that what I’ve shown here is still a work in progress and things may be subject to change. Now, let’s wrap up the dev diary with some smaller additions.

We’ve renamed the West African religion to simply “African”, as to not exclude the newly added region around lake Chad, and updated the Patron Deities accordingly. The religion will also get a new set of shields for displaying the CoAs on the map.

Crimean goths confirmed, again I hope their in the Byzantine culture group.

The Goths are in the Byzantine culture group.

Africa hasn't really been on my map before but this makes a game there look pretty cool.

One of our latest office multiplayers were in Africa. I've never played there before either, but it ended up being a lot of fun, so I'd recommend people to test it out when HF is released.

I'm generally so happy about all the changes shown thus far. I only have some concerns about the names for the new de jure empires in the steppes: both "Pontic Steppe" and "Volga-Ural" are pretty bad. While I concur that a good name for the former can be something along the lines of "Scythia" or "Sarmatia", I'm not sure about the latter - perhaps some mythical name from the Bulgar/Tatar, Finno-Ugric, or even Graeco-Roman traditions (e.g. Hyperborea)?

(Also, while we're at it: the 1066 de jure empires map in northeastern Italy looks quite ugly, you sure you want Carinthia and Trent in de jure HRE?)

I forgot one question from my previous list so here goes before I forget it again:

8. Will pagans finally have more religious artifacts than just one or two? And I mean like major artifacts like Mjolnir, Sampo etc.

Good ones for suomenusko could be Väinämöinens sword or kantele and hammer of Ilmarinen (creator of sampo so it would of course be more of a blacksmiths hammer than a warhammer like Mjolnir). Of course there are other pagan religions too that could use more artifacts but I don't know their mythology or legends so well

could we please remove the "empire" part from the empire title. feels so clunky. like Persia instead of Persian empire (works for Mali and Abyssinia) Byzantium. call the wendish empire Wends. bit more fluid
on the contrary I think it should be used more. The empire of Scaninavia should be The Nordic Empire for an example.
The pontic steppe I would rename the default name as empire of the steppe and then have it be named other stuff if held by other peoples.

A problem with that is that either it is a temporary tributary that goes independent in a generation or so (which means the problem only gets slightly delayed) or the ERE is rendered unable to take the "Restore the Roman Empire" decision due to not holding Venice (as the AI will not release its own tributaries even if it should).
So just add an event where if Byzantium gets to weak venice breaks of and if Byzantium gets to strong it gives venice the choice of becoming a full vassal or going independent with the basileus getting a claim on them.

What was the Empire of Mali then?

If I had to make a guess, in game terms, it was a high tribal organization tribe. The system worked very similarly to feudalism, but it wasn't full blown "western" feudalism, mostly because of the way the culture handled wars, and the fact that it really was a big confederation of tribes.
Actually the empire if Mali was a highly centralized state with only ceremonial vestiges of a federal tribal structure. It was a beureuctratic monarchy like the ottoman empire or the chinese empire and it made europe look like barbarians. They built wonders of the world, and great libraries more impressive than anything in Europe at the time, except in the Byzantine empire.
Pretty much any government would fit Mali better than tribal.

I sure hope not. A Viking running around swinging hammer he claimed was mjölner is really ridiculous. 1. It doesn't have the powers. 2. If thor does not have his hammer he cant drive back the ice giants and so spring won't happen.
I really hoped they'd have gone for more muted things like the sword of Sigurd/Sigfried or so on. Perhaps let reformed Norse characters go look for Skräpp, the lost sword of Freyr (Which must be foud before Ragnarök if the gods are to be victorious), in the same way Christians went looking for the holy grail.

You know that’s a great idea and would add some much needed(although small) flavor and a great event to Byzantium and Venice.

Ard Rí would be cool, but I think using a different language title might be too much, since High King is a direct translation. It's like the way French and German cultured characters use the King title, as opposed to Roi or König.


I see your point on the King example and you're right, the French or Germans don't use the localized variants for the king title at least. However, I also mentioned the emperor title for which the word "Kaiser" is used. I have also seen the title Baselius get used by rulers of a Greek cultured realm besides the ERE. The CK2 wiki also lists a bunch of other culture-related title changes for emperors. I do accept that in the grand scheme of things, the title of the ruler is relatively insignificant but I figured it'd be worth raising all the same as you never know who'll see it:p.

So the african rework will be released in the same patch as Holy Fury ? Thought it'd could be independant from the DLC's dev's scheme (I don't code so I don't know anything about how to create a software).

1) Will Goths use German/Norse portraits?
2) Will the Ostrogoths in the files be updated with the new culture?
3) "Byzantine" is really just "Ancient Cultures" now isn't it? Greek, Caucasian, Assyrian, Alan (Scythian), Gothic, (seemingly) Coptic, and the Israelites use Byzantine graphics and show as purple on the map.

Most of this culture were part of the Byzantinosphere. The cultural political sphere of the Byzantine Empire. Also the Goths at this date were HIGHELY Hellenized already.

Don't forget about the assyrians, they're also in the byzantine group. Funnily enough though when converted to EU4 they're in the caucasian group with georgians o_O

Exactly most Crimean goths didn’t even speak their native language by 769 and been part of the empire since the 400s. Armenian and Georgians were both heavily culturally and politically connected to the empire. Copts I think are prettey obvious, Assyrians and Alan’s definitely are debatable though, Alan’s belong in the Iranian group.
