CK2 Dev Diary #61: The Dragon Throne

Hello folks!

The Swedish summer vacations are drawing to a close and I’m back and eager to talk some more Crusader Kings! What better way to kick off the end of summer than by revealing the theme of the next expansion? Yes my friends, it’s China! Now, before you get all emotional one way or the other, we’re not actually going to expand the map farther east. We considered doing that, long and hard, but eventually decided on a different approach that would not strain performance and stability beyond reason. As I mentioned in Dev Diary #51, it bothers me that the eastern edge of the map just cuts off in such an unnatural way. Playing in the Orient, you should always feel like you’re in the shadow of the Dragon. It should be an interesting and dynamic region right in the center of the Old World. So, we came up with the idea of adding China as a political entity even though you cannot actually see most of its territory.

The Dragon Throne.png

There is a new screen you can open up, which, if you’re within range of China, allows you to interact with the Emperor in various interesting ways. China can grant many wonderful boons if you’re in the emperor’s good graces, but, depending on the current status and policy of the Dragon Throne, the emperor can also decide you’d better show some respect and become a tributary state. When there is turmoil in China, displaced or fleeing armies can arrive on the map and cause all kinds of trouble. China can even seize and rule actual provinces, but the emperor leaves the governing of such areas to the Governor of the Western Protectorate (or, to be a stickler, the “Protectorate General to Pacify the West”.) Potentially, this on-map part of China can grow enormously powerful, but you should not have to worry too much as long as you enjoy the emperor’s grace…

That’s going to be all for now. I’m sure you have a million questions, but you’ll have to wait for the upcoming dev diaries. :)

Meanwhile, remember to tune in to our CK2 livestreams between 16 to 18:00 CET!

Those were era names as you said, not regnal names.

What's the difference if that's what they're called after assuming the throne? I mean unless someone didn't know what era it was, then that's the emperor's name. Obviously when addressing the emperor they'll use formal titles and honorifics, but that's the same anywhere else, similar to how someone will say Mr. President and maybe not President Obama or President Bush.

You know the Prince-Electors only come into play after the Golden Bull of 1356? After the last start date? People should stop confusing the EU era HRE with the medieval one. In the middle ages the HRE was more centralised than France. This only changed during the late middle ages.

The Prince-Electors were around and and active prior to their formal establishment by the golden bull in 1356. The great interregnum of the HRE in 1257 was caused by a split vote between the 7 Kurfürsten. Pope Urban IV even said at this time that the 7 Prince-Electors had been the ones designated to elect the Emperor as "immerorial custom" as well.

Regnal name is a name officialy taken by a monarch upon the ascension to the throne. Era names refers only to an era, a period of time. That the custom in Ming and Qing times was for an Emperor to have one era for the entire rule is irrelevant. Though the difference is really semantic at this point.

@ChaosOnline What about my post were you disagreeing with? In 1257 Richard of Cornwall received votes from the electors of Cologne, Mainz, The Palatinate and Bohemia while Alfonso X of Castile received votes from the electors of Saxony, Brandenburg, and Trier.

Now that India and the steppe are connected and there's so many more non indian bhuddist characters will the Indian cast traits finally be separated from the religion so only indians have them?

Also will there be anything done to reduce the spread of Hinduism outside of conquest? It seems that Hordes tend to like the religion but it doesn't make much sense when they're distant from the subcontinent and have none of the cultural background.

Yes, I know one is called an era name and one is a regnal name.

But in the way they are practiced during the Ming and Qing dynasties, they are functionally the same. The emperor was referred to colloquially and in literature by their era names. The Hongwu and Chongzhen emperors were Hongwu and Chongzhen the moment they announced their reign. It was not posthumous. That's what they were during their reign. It is functionally almost identical to how reign or regnal names worked, with the exception that it also applies to an era, but even that is pretty similar to what happened in Europe. For example one would refer to an era as "in the reign of X and Y".

Yeah, it's honestly pretty ahistorical to tie the caste traits to the Indian religions, rather than Indian cultures. Caste restrictions continued to be observed during the Islamic and British periods in India, even among the foreign nobility. Beyond that, people who practice Indian religions outside of India, like you said, don't observe caste restrictions.

You can add Diwali to that list. Not practiced by non-Indians, but it's tied to the Jain and Buddhists.

Seems like a cheap cop-out to add China without actually adding China. I'll wait and see before making a more solid comment. Could've done without the EUIV interface, for sure though.

I have a few big concerns about china being added and being able to have their little piece of the map too. When inevitably the governor of the western protectorate (or whatever the title is) comes into play well.. will he bring any kind of Chinese religion Culture or government west with him? cause i gotta admit if this was the case i'd probably go out of my way to culture/religion flip just for the sheer fun of painting the continent a new set of colors in that regard but most importantly I think it would be quite a shame if t he Chinese Govenor came over and was just say.. Buddhist or Tengri.. Also how interactable will china be? will i be able to send off my daughter to be a concubine of the emperor in exchange for his good favor? More so since eunuchs played such an important role in Chinese government will the Govenor be one?

personally i had hoped for anything but china.. since we're getting it anyway i want it to feel at least as lively as the Aztecs

Ok, I am not going to mention the naming system of Chinese. It's too much here.

I wonder if you can make Buddhism more accurate. In my opinion, Mahayana and Vijrayana may choose their patron deities and bring different benefits to the relm. It is important because you add Tibet to the map. Also, in the time period new branches of Buddhism are booming in China and bring a lot of religious discussions. Also, Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism are merging and resulting Neo-Confucianism in the gameplay period.

The retreat of China and expansion of Tibetan Empire and Muslim in Sinkiang today is also interesting!!!

Interesting! Will this be able to simulate the rise and fall of different dynasties? How will the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period be handled? Can the Western Protectorate become independent if the authority of the emperor is too low or there is no official empire? Can a player become the Chinese Emperor if they decisively defeat the current emperor?

Can't wait to see the Aztec Tlatoani be added ;)

Honestly my heart skipped a beat when I saw on Steam today "Crusader Kings... The Dragon Throne" I would have preferred a new Imperial government type with actual Tang China, but this is a nice middle ground.
