CK2 - Dev Diary #128 - The Iron Century Finale

Good evening, or morning, or potentially afternoon. First off, I am happy to announce that if everything goes as planned we will release Patch 3.2 with the Iron Century bookmark on Tuesday. Yes, this Tuesday. The 28th of May. So for today's DD we will take a look at some of the remaining things we've added, starting with 5 new decisions.

Brother’s Legacy: For those who want to take up the legacy of Mardavij, we have added a special decision for his brother Vushmgir. This will give you a claim on Mardavij’s old regions as well as convert Vushmgir and any of his family to Zoroastrianism. In addition, you will receive Mardavij’s new bloodline, if you choose to pick up Zoroastrianism.

Local Traditions of Rus: For the Norse Germanic rulers of Kievan Rus, it might be a good idea to turn to the local traditions (see Russian culture and Slavic faith) if you want better relations with your vassals. If Yngvar isn't played by a player, the AI will choose to use this decision at game start.

Clipboard08.png

Bulgarian Empire: This is not actually for the 936 bookmark itself, as… Well… There already is a Bulgarian Empire there, but rather for the fans of Bulgaria who want to recreate history in the earlier bookmarks.

Clipboard12.png

Establish Cairo: As you might know, Cairo wasn’t actually an important city at the start of our bookmark. Or the two earlier bookmark start dates (see 769 and 867) either. It was not until the Fatimids invaded the Ikhshidids and took control of the region that they established Cairo as the capital of their Caliphate, and quickly built it up over a couple of years. Similarly, if you play as the Fatimids and invade Egypt, you get to make Cairo a special city as well! Congratulations! Woo!

Clipboard10.png

Establish Castle Habsburg: For those of you who are particularly interested in weirdly shaped jawlines, we have added a decision to form Castle Habsburg. If you play as anyone of the Etichonen dynasty and hold the province of Basel, you will have the decision to establish the Habsburg castle. All close (living) relatives of the founder in question will become a part of the new von Habsburg dynasty.

Now then, onward to the new bloodlines we are adding. One of the goals when adding these was to try and keep them pretty insular for the 936 Bookmark, so you'd rarely see them outside of it. We've added 6 new ones, and we'll start with the three pretty generic ones:

Clipboard02.png

Clipboard03.png

Now onwards to the two special Muslim ones. Both the Shia and Qarmatian Leadership makes it easier to create the religious head titles, skipping several requirements for the holder.
Clipboard04.png

Clipboard05.png

And finally, the Otto the Great bloodline. Princely Elective Boon makes any holder of the bloodline more likely to be picked by vassals as the new Emperor in a Princely Elective system. You receive this bloodline if you manage to form the HRE as Otto.

Reactions:
So Portugual will have 13 provinces, which represents how much higher the population density it had than the rest of Iberia? Cool.
vbCD9JJ.png

Not quite.

Only 2 provinces were added to "Portugal", the other was Hielba added to Andalucia, "Spain".

Which makes Portugal with a total of 12 provinces, and Spain with a total of 57, for a Portuguese density of 12.9, not 14.1, and Spain with 11.2, not 10.9. (This number reflects desmenese per 100 000 km2), which is still a slightly higher Portuguese density, but barely noticeable.

And although Portugal indeed always had a higher populational density than most of Iberia, it was the coastal-northern areas of Portugal that were the most dense, but these two new counties were added in the inland-center and the coastal-south, which have always been very sparsely populated (The exception being during the muslim golden age, when the south did feature some impressive urban centers, but the rural areas were still sparser than in the north).

Besides, as you can see in your map Iberia as a whole has almost 3 times less the density of France and England&Wales, despite having roughly the same population as France (in 1066) while being slightly smaller, also it had over 5 times the population of England&Wales (in 1066), despite having only 4 times the size (so, iberia in 1066 was actually both denser than France and England&Wales).

Granted, as the reconquista progressed, the massive war casualites alongside the Muslim expulsions and fleeing did cause Iberia to fall behind France significantly in population, and England to catch up in the following decades, having only 1/3 of France's population in 1300 and only twice as much as England&Wales (so roughly around a third of France's density and half of England&Wales'), so its acceptable that Iberia has a smaller density than these areas, but the difference seems a bit too much, expecially considering the game is played far more often in the 769-1066 startdates than the 1241-1337 ones.

Can't wait for the new changes to Portugal.

It would be awesome if you separate Slesvig into it's own Duchy from Holstein. Also Serbia could use another Duchy. Maybe a Duchy of Belgrade.

It's awesome this is coming out so soon. I've been hesitant to work further on my map repaint knowing I'd have to edit a lot of my existing work. Granted most of it requires a simple copy and paste.

I don't see any such phrase in the decision text.

It was late, I was tired. I conflated "

This will give you a claim on Mardavij’s old regions as well as convert Vushmgir and any of his family to Zoroastrianism. Pretty much what I figured. Thanks, 8 pages is a lot to read through and I must have missed it from earlier.
Which really sucks when you have an interesting world state going on (not just from you but from the AI as well).

My last 3 campaigns haven't made it beyond 200 years before it was time to reset everything again.

Does being in love with multiple wives/concubines still fire the lose a lover or get stressed event? Also do wives still ask if you're cheating on them if you've got other wives/concubines as lovers?

You could try rolling back to the earlier version of the game you played the campaign on in order to finish it?

So, have you given up on making the Caspian a proper ocean, or is it just not in yet? I want my Jewish republic on the Caspian sea!
Even if Paradox never gets around to adding it. As long as you don't mind not getting achievements, I will have your back.

You added the Qarmatians?!

HOT DOG!! It's about time! I can't wait to sack Mecca!

@Bandua_of_Gallaecia England&Wales is just too rich compared to France. With the same population density, one would think their provinces would be about the same size, but instead, the average French province is 33% larger than the average province of England&Wales. But Italy gets the worst of it:
Ireland (16.7 density) 496px
England (29.8 density) 357px
Italy (41.5 density) 505px

The only way to make it relative would be to give Italy 12 more provinces. And I think it would need it, the North Italy is pretty ugly.

Talking about population density... this should be reflected by numbers of holdings, not by provinces. A province with one holding is not as dense populated as a province with 7 holdings. Using province numbers makes no sense.

Actually I would say provinces with more than 5 base holding slots should be broken up (particularly in Iran/Iraq)

@Thure Representation of population density via holdings isn't a viable approach. During this period the Baghdad's population reached a million, and it's represented by seven holdings. Meanwhile, provinces that didn't have the population anything close to that have the same maximum holdings such as Constantinople, Prague, Paris, Cairo, and Kiev. Meanwhile, London whose population peaked at eighty-thousand has six slots.

Pretty cool, but those are some highly specific decisions. I hope we see more like this in the future or they'll feel a little out of place.

Why? Based on what reasoning? Baghdad was the largest city of world back then. Persia was always a very rich country with a sizable population (before the Mongol decimation). And from my knowledge, on Esfahan has 6 holdings and if you look up its history, was a center of trade and power in Iran for centuries

That's why I wanted more provinces in the area of those kinds of cities.

Mfw no fixing in the Wallachia title tier department. :(
Wallachia was never known as a kingdom, and even in the game files it is known as Dacia(also seems like you are using a rather modern flag for the game period, that being Michael the brave's 2 lions holding a sword, which was used for Transylvania(I mean, you could also argue that that was his personal c.o.a.))
Muntenia was always a region of Wallachia, not a duchy, and as such I suggest reversing the name change of Holy fury, back from Muntenia to Wallachia.
And as for the duchy of Oltenia, that was created by Hungary to give something to the knights of st John to keep the Vlachs from revolting(Mentioned in the diploma of the Joannites) , which they did anyways, with Ioan Basarab (or Basarab the 1st) destroying that title after he got the independence of wallachia.

Maybe another patch.
I think they're going for regions that fit in gameplay instead of airtight historical accuracy (like Taurica being switched out with Crimea). What they have for Wallachia now roughly fits the state that was a vassal of the Ottomans or the Hungarians, right?

Is it at all possible for a design ruler character to be able to establish the Habsburg castle anf family?

I don't think so. You have to belong to a specific dynasty to use it.
