CK2 - Dev Diary #122 - A Great Patch

Greetings!

We’re happy to let you know that the patch we’ve been working on since the release of the Great Works update will be available on Thursday next week, May 16. We thank you for your patience, and without further ado, we would like to present the patch notes for more details.

In response to some of the feedback we got last week on the Court Improvements, we have also been able to make sure that going over the soft limit (on the number of courtiers you can house) is accompanied by a small prestige gain. All in all, we look forward to you trying it out and letting us know what you think. :)

That’s all for now, but we’ll be back next week with another dev diary for some things to come. Stay tuned!

P.S We have started streaming again now on Thursdays, 16:00 CEST.

We've seen multiple posts during the past weeks where people have been praising our work on CK2 while at the same time being negative about something that another Paradox development team has done.

A reminder for everyone in this thread:
This is NOT an acceptable behavior.

While we understand that the intent of the post is to give us praise about our work, the result of the message is hurtful both towards us and our fellow colleagues.
We are very grateful for all of the love we have received for our work lately and that is something we treasure every word of, and that's why we think you're one of the most rewarding communities to work with.
But criticism of the other game projects does not have its place under the Crusader Kings forum. That critique belongs to the different sub-forums, 'lest everything should devolve into talking behind people's back and creating a generally toxic environment. There are no superior sub-forums in Paradoxplaza - we all engage in this community because we love to discuss the games that we enjoy playing and I hope that we can continue to keep it that way.

Thank you for respecting this.

(Not yellow text, so I figure its safe to ask for clarification)

So if we keep our criticisms to the relevant sub-forum, I assume we can still say something positive about a different team when we’re contrasting, right? For example, if we don’t like what the CK2 team is doing, and think the EU4 team handled a similar issue better, say so on the CK2 sub-forum.

I thought they were finished with DLC, that’s nice to know. Glad I’ve got all the addons for this game.

Well, this is just my opinion, I have absolute no say/know about what Paradox does... but common sense points that way.
CK2 is here to stay while it is profitable and I guess that means for the foreseeable future.

That's what I'm guessing. CK2 is still earning revenue enough to support a small team of content designers, so they get to stay busy, and they're in a weird place where they don't have any massive profit projections and massive budget numbers to hit so they get to do cool fan-friendly projects that keep the game relevant and the new money rolling in without making a bunch of waves.

I mean, it's kind of a genius way to ride a game's lifecycle if you ask me. It makes me deliriously happy.

Yeh CK2 is the Paradox DLC policy done right. Be cool if somehow they could port most of all the work they have done into the CK3 engine. Obviously some parts would need to be wrote from scratch such as combat but it would be a waste to throw it all away and start from scratch.

Hope next patch we get a myriad of new interface and map graphics for Great Works built by different culture groups. Say different designs for a Palace when built by a European Culture and a Middle Eastern culture for example

Yeh CK2 is the Paradox DLC policy done right.
...uhhhh....
Not really. To steal a Stellaris event series... unless I'm way off on my guess... this is THE END OF THE CYCLE.

Like we might be down to one actual paid expansion a year, if that (I'm skeptical, I think we're in free/maintence mode only). And I'm willing to bet that the Mac people don't get that, since it would require CK2 to be updated to the 64 bit engine since Apple is banning 32 bit apps on their OS (because Apple wants to remind people that if you play games, you should not own a Mac).

So this isn't "the Paradox DLC policy done right" at all. This is what happens AFTER the Paradox DLC policy has been done right. After the game has made enough money, after it has moved into "it makes enough every month on just residual income and Steam sales to justify some content work."

It's nice and I salute Paradox for not just letting it sit and letting the money roll in. It's a great way to keep that stream running.

Are you going to include this picture for Hagia Sophia in the patch? It can be seen already, when using russian localisation mod without any other mods. One can clearly see ottoman buildings and no cross on the picture...

The new start date is really unexpected and brilliant. It's like they are going through an old list of features I was asking for and filling them in.

I made a list a long time ago and so many of them have come true - customisable reformations, imperial government, more provinces for certain places, more titular titles (archduchy etc), complete crusade rework, China content, bordergore fixes.. even giving red hats to Cardinals... amazing.

Great Duke (like when people have two duchy titles while a vassal) should still show up as name, culture could do with some stuff, and the Great Schism could do with some features, as well as Eastern Christians, Jews and Zoros.. a little of customisation for the colour of Custom Kingdoms or Empires.. few other small things.. but that's all for another thread...

Well done devs

I feel the same: First the overhaul of the crusade-mechanics and now (probably) the new start date.

Hmm no

While content wise the CK2 were mostly great it used the old Paradox DLC policy where they would sell the expansion, graphics and music in separate packs, and in the end you had so much DLC that it frightened the new players.

I do prefer a lot the newer Paradox DLC policy implemented in Stellaris, HOI4 and CK2 after Holy Fury where all that content comes in a single DLC.

That started with M&M already. M&M sold the music separately, but the new portraits were part of the main DLC. And Jade Dragon sold everything together for the first time
