CK2 Dev Diary #12: The Maim event

Hello all, it’s time for another DD about ZombieInvasion <Secret DLC*>! Today we’ll take a look at what we’ve done to the Maimed trait. Well, we’ve removed it! People without <Secret DLC> can still be Maimed, of course, but the lucky owners of <Secret DLC> will instead receive more specific injuries, such as: One-handed, One-legged, One-Eyed, Disfigured, or Mangled (this represents severe trauma to the torso, mostly). As well as allowing more specific wounds and flavor, this has allowed us to remove the Health penalty from most of these traits (Mangled still has one though). Instead, when you receive a maiming-type injury you will also receive the Severely Injured trait, which has some health and stat penalties, but will be lost after some time has passed. Afterall, while losing a hand is certainly not an enjoyable process, you do eventually heal up and can be perfectly healthy besides the missing appendage. Also, if anyone is feeling creative, please suggest interesting effects for these new traits - we do of course have some penalties on them, but I worry they are a little dull, so fire away and I may shamelessly steal your ideas.

Since both One-eyed and Disfigured affect the faces of characters, we have added a lot of new portrait props to reflect this. Here is a small sample of what you might see ingame:
showcase.jpg

We have also added several events relating to life with missing body parts:
facey.jpg

a disfigured ruler holds a masquerade ball

handy.jpg

the loss of a hand is a severe blow to a famous warrior

That’s all for now, next week I am not certain which DD we will show, either I will talk about some extra Pagan features we’ve added, or Doomdark will give you some of his thoughts about CK2. It will be a surprize!

*= DLC contains no zombies

Is it possible for someone to lose both their hands, legs, etc.?

No, losing both would block you from so many basic tasks rather than just making things more difficult, so we've stuck to the one loss.

Quite meager news.

Events can be created by modders, paradox just wastes time on it. These events are just silly. Modders do a much better job.

I also don't need 13 ways of being injured. Adds only cosmetics (quite literally).

Well cool, play mods then. You do understand we have people whose job is literally to make events though, right? It's not like the programmers do it on the side [much].

We do not. We had thought about Deafness as a trait, but there are so many events where you are assumed to be hearing someone talk it would have either ment disabling or re-writing them for a marginally interesting trait.
I see. But what about gaining other disabilities with age? It could be anything else, really. Old people's sight deteriorate, they lose teeth, can't move as fast as they could, etc.
Maybe the general "Old" trait might be a good idea?

It's not in the plan. We do have the chance to become infirm/incapable as you age already though, but they are quite broad.

You know, sometimes when someone loses one of his sences he starts developing others. So, I think that it could be a nice idea that a blinded ruler couold have a chance to aquire an "increased hearing" trait or something like that. It would increase his intrigue stat, because he could better hear wishpered conversations at his court and whatnot.
Well, actually, they do not. They just use techniques that some people don't understand. For example, a blind person often makes clicking noises to locate better where they are the same way bats do. If you tried this yourself you would master it soon enough.

Could also be good to have your family respons to your injury.
It could mean a closer relationship to your spouse, who will Care for you, or it could do the opposite and mean your spouse will leave you, or cheat on you. You could also suffer from your kids taking a distance to you, grosed out, or your sons could question your abilty to rule...

Also, what about pensions, where vassals and generals ask for economical aid, due to their injuries in your service...?

One eyed could cause have events when you are in combat where an enemy attacks from your blind spot or making hunts harder since you would have inferior ability to tell distance

One-eyed: -4 combat skill (limited depth perception),

I just want to point out that having one eye does not affect your depth perception nearly as much as people tend to think it does. Most depth perception cues are monocular. Having two eyes is mostly beneficial for perceiving the distance of near objects (< 10 m away). Compare monocular vs binocular cues.

On topic though, this looks like good stuff. I was kind of sick of the old generic "maimed" trait. Losing a finger should feel different than losing a leg. All the DD's put together make it look like this is shaping up to be a fun DLC.

Will you also replace the horrifyingly creepy black abysses where the eyes of a fully blinded character had been with blindfolds, given that you are willing to introduce eyepatches?

Piracy DLC confirmed. Just need naval combat. ;)

More seriously, will nicknames be updated to cover the new injury system? It'd be nice for a ruler with, for example, a prosthetic metal limb to become known as "Ironhand", and so on.
Also, I think a character should also gain disabilities with old age. You know, start limping, become deaf, etc. Do you have a plan to implement something like this?
We already have infirm (physical incapacity) and incapable (mental incapacity) which can happen in old age, but yes, it would be interesting to have "natural" deafness and blindness. As far as I can remember the "maimed" blindness is te only form in the game right now.

Infertility should be a potential wound result. It still happens in warfare all the time that combatants catch one in the unmentionables.

Would it be possible to have a to have a prosthetic hand like Gotz von Berlichingen?

We don't currently have that, but I would like to add it if we have time.

Will the mask portraits also be used for characters with leprosy?

Yes and no. It is not added directly to lepers, but lepers do tend to become disfigured.

More seriously, will nicknames be updated to cover the new injury system? It'd be nice for a ruler with, for example, a prosthetic metal limb to become known as "Ironhand", and so on.

Yes, we added a bunch of nicknames, and not just for this.

View attachment 192515

We have also added several events relating to life with missing body parts:

the loss of a hand is a severe blow to a famous warrior

That’s all for now, next week I am not certain which DD we will show, either I will talk about some extra Pagan features we’ve added, or Doomdark will give you some of his thoughts about CK2. It will be a surprize!

*= DLC contains no zombies
Historically speaking in the Judeo/Christian world many people intentionally maimed those of noble succession rights because it would make them ineligible for kingship. This was certainly true with the Byzantines. It comes from the idea from the Bible that a person can not be disfigured and enter the temple. Leviticus 21:18. So it was often used against people. So you could do a lot with that. Justinian II created a golden nose and enforced his people to accept it as real. Weird stuff like that. Create intrigues to hide the maim and give negative mods with the clergy
