Once again we are back with yet another development diary for Cities: Skylines. This time we are going to get a glimpse of the public transport options in your future cities.

If you want to refresh your memory about the previous dev diaries, check here: http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?802652-Cities-Skylines-dev-diary-archive

Working on public transport in Cities: Skylines we wanted to offer a variety of choices for the players to set up their public transport network while still keeping in mind that Cities: Skylines is first and foremost a city builder game rather than a transport simulator. Our goal was to implement the feature in so that it would be easy to use, following in suit with the rest of the features while still being robust enough to make it interesting and strategically sound. The fans of Cities in Motion games had always wanted to build rail networks and airports to control the intercity traffic but the scope of those games was always within the city limits. However, with Cities: Skylines' goods transport and citizens moving in and out of the city, we felt that it was a good time to bring in the intercity traffic possibilities to public transport.

Public transport types
Cities: Skylines features several modes of public transport. You can set up a bus network, dig metro tunnels, lay down tracks for passenger and cargo trains, build both passenger and cargo terminals for ships and build an airpot. Bus and metro network is for inner city transport while train network can service both inner city and intercity needs (both, passenger and cargo trains!). The harbors and the airport service intercity connections.

Bus transport
The bus transport is the first, low-cost choice for public transport. There are two structures required for it to work: the bus depot and bus stops. The bus depot works as the storage space for the buses in the city and when setting up new bus routes you can see the buses leaving the depot for their designated routes. Adjusting the budget for buses causes more (or less) buses to appear on the routes. One bus depot can service the whole city but a placing more than one in strategic places around the city can shorten the time when new buses reach their routes since they don't have to drive through the whole city to get there.

Metro
Metro is an efficient transport mode to move a lot of people fast. However, its downside is the high building cost since the player needs to build both the metro entrances (stations) as well as the underground tracks. Underground track building is done in a special view mode where the tracks and stations are highlighted. This mode also highlights the other public transport buildings, tracks and routes which makes planning of the network easier.

Trains
Trains are divided into passenger and cargo trains. Both trains have their own terminals that the player can build in the city. The player can use the train network in two different ways:
1) If they only build the terminals and connect the train tracks to the outside connecting train tracks found on the map, the terminals will service intercity traffic, importing and exporting cargo and passengers (tourists).
2) The player is also able to use the train line tool to create train routes within the city limits i.e. the player is able to build inner city train lines servicing the different parts of the city.
Train tracks are cheaper to build compared to underground metro tracks but train tracks require room to be built hence they must be fitted within the city next to all the buildings and roads. However, the player can build elevated train tracks to navigate over some of the obstacles a city can present.

Harbors
Harbors are divided into a passenger harbor and a cargo harbor. Both service intercity traffic, bringing in tourists and shipping goods to and from the city. Due to the huge capacity of the ships harbors are one of the largest entry points into the city by means of public transport.

Airport
Airport services mostly passengers and is the most expensive public transport investment. It brings in a lot of tourists and can really boost the economy. While the airport increases tourism into the city it also causes quite a lot of noise pollution which means that it is wise to build the airport far from residential zones.

Maybe the buses should be become more modern the higher funding is.

That's a good idea but could be problematic for those who want to create custom busses.

Maybe we could chose from different models for the different lines, with a different funding for each one ?? (and an ability for creators to set the funding range for their custom models ??).

What if some of the buildings had an upgrade option for transport? Like you build an office building and there would be an upgrade option for subway station, or a bus terminal?

Or a taxi, shuttle bus circle for luxury hotels and/or casinos.

You would be able to add the upgrade once you build a transport building.

A good compromise between the sea/airport being too big/small would be the ability to zone them (either directly or as a policy area akin to the resources). I've seen this mechanic used in another sim game before (I forget which, but someone someone feel free to elaborate).

For the airport: Ensure that there is a minimum size restriction to accommodate a single runway and terminal, and then fill the miscellaneous space with additional hangars, satellite terminals, offices, hotels, radars, aprons, stands, fuel tanks etc. As you extend the zone more runways/terminals are constructed as space allows.

For the seaport: Ensure that the zone is touching a body of water and then fill with relevant container stacks, storage warehouses, cranes, docks, dry docks, transit hubs etc as the zone is expanded.

I think this would please the majority by allowing the expansion of the respective ports as necessary, also giving the player more freedom as to the direction the port extends. Obviously I'm not sure whether this kind of dynamic is possible in the engine, but just wanted to throw in my $0.02.

The Metro entrance really doesn't bother me, seems roughly proportionate to me. Looks fine aesthetically too

Personally, I would like to see the Metro Station built into the sidewalk.. CO was able to "nest" the bus-stops in the sidewalk afterall, so buses have a bulb-out.. You think they could add sidewalk subway entrances without too much difficulty.

Anyway, this image is so great:

Elevated rail is going to be huge in this game.. I can't wait to see three tracks of elevated rail side-by-side in an industrial Cleveland/Chicago type city, surrounded by warehouses, factories, and row-houses.

SimCity 4 made it so hard to build elevated rail, even with mods it was almost not worth it.. CO fixed this big time. I'm sure down the road bridges will be easily modded too, to create more brick-archways and other types of bridge looks.. Seems easy to do using the modability of this game.

I think a modular harbor/airport building tool would be cool. You could build the "base" unit/s for each, maybe a terminal, tower and runway for the airport, and commercial/private docks, an offloading/storage area and a refueling dock for the port. Even if it doesn't facilitate gameplay in the slightest to make it bigger than the size you have it now, allowing us to build freeform ports and docks and train depots would be more immersive and aesthetically pleasing. Also, expanding the portsanddocksandtraindepots freeform-like could replace the need for possibly building a second static later in the game by creating similar capacity and efficiency boosts.

It would be important to have big parking lots at rail and metro stations, and bus stops. I especially mean on the outskirts of a town (or in the suburbs). In this case working people and tourists would be glad not to go into the city and to become crazy with any kind of traffic jam.

I like that the devs are not neglecting freight transport system, the bus line system seems good.

I agree with the message above, I want maximum control about the elevation of my railways (or roads).

After reading the diary and reading all the comments i think we're all agreed on a few things that really needs to be adressed. Even if CO is making a citybuilder, the majority of the fanbase rose from CIM & CIM2. We want our public transport and we want it good.

I agree completely with the seven points of this post.
Number 4 (possibility of a large central railways station and in general stations that can welcome 2-3 lines) especially will be the difference for me between buy at release and buy later (if the game is good :p)

I would also like some trams but would be okay if it came in a dlc.

Other features I will be looking for are usually what I find currently lacking in CiM*2*:
- Coloring lines (auto and manual)
- A "smart" tool to build lines. Roads not hindering subway, possibility to alternate crossing when I build a railway over a road (do I*want a railway crossing ?*a bridge ?*a tunnel ?). Other stuffs that I am not thinking of but that a game designer would see.
- Possibility to auto-name stations (using neighbooring streets/landmarks)
- Manage lines station by simple drag and drop. I don't want to destroy my whole line if I*want to change something !
- Tools querying that allow me to see the paths travelled by those who use the transport system, just like in Sim City 4. Including roads of course, but also the other means, including transfer also.
- Building to facilitate transfer (for realism purposes) such as parkings.
- Multi-transports stations (bus and/or train and/or subways).

And of course mod support. I don't expect the devs to give me some stations like Gare du Nord or Shibuya but I hope I can download a mod like that one day.*Same for airports.

1 - Airports and ports is just SO SMALL. Players of a city build game want a realistic game, not more one "lets make a silly simcity".
...
4 - I love the cargo trains! :)

I know its not a transport game like cities in motion but the transport is one important thing in city, we love transports we love make the city so invest more on this! :)

Actually, even if you are not loving "transport" but "city planning", transport should be big. And with "big", I refer to space consumption. Take, for example, Frankfurt. According to Wiki, the area of the airport is about 2100 ha, which takes up almost 10% of the area of Frankfurt. And if you look at rail transport, it is quite similar. There should be major train terminals for both cargo and passenger, with switchyards, depots etc.

I have an advice about busses: They look perfect for long distance, but not for urban service... can DEV make 2 kind of busses? One for urban city services and one for intercity connections (which are the one showed) so players can choose which one is better for the line?
It would be nice if in a future DLC we could have a sort of "Cities in motion expansion" where we could manage deeply the transports department.
It would be fantastic for who's following you since CiM1!!=)
What do you think about it?

Thanks for all the great feedback so far :)

Sorry if I'm a little impatient, but...
We all wrote over 6 pages of comments - including praise, criticism, suggestions, ideas and prayers - and this is all we get in response? Please. We - the players - take this game seriously. Much more seriously than SimCity, anyway. We want it to look great and realistic, which includes and heavily emphasises public transport. And judging based on Cities in Motion 2 and how poorly it delivered (as for a public transport sim), we have a good reason to be worried about the outcome of Cities: Skylines. We'd feel awesome, if you - either CO or Paradox people - could do something to satisfy our general needs ;)
Of course I don't mean to say anything bad about anyone here, because the Devs are already doing a good job. And I'll be one of the first to buy and play C:S :)

There's loads more than 6 pages of comments/feedback on this topic, but I do get your point.

We'll of course do our best to satisfy your needs, but this game isn't going to be a public transport simulator - it's a city builder that happens to be made by a team who has done such a game previously.

There are lots of things we could do to expand and improve public transport beyond the already working and (more than) sufficient system we have today, but there's no room for that in the pre-release development schedule. Had we aimed for such a development we would have featured early access or a beta :)

It could be great if we could name the stations. I imagine how I'm spending 10 hours just for creating good names for metro or bus stations. xD Is it already possible? And metro entry should be smaller.
