For twenty years Italia, after suffering horrendous loss at hands of Central Powers in First Weltkrieg, remained split in two rivalring entities - Papal-led Federation up north, strictly controlled by Mitteleuropa in 20s and Communist Republic, based in southern Italy and Sicilia. For twenty years...
Twenty days after Federation joined the war, Papal Army was already at the outskirts of Napoli. Liberation and freedom was waiting for Neapolitans and all Southerners and Pope was about to bring it to them.
Socialist Republic's officials already deemed resistance worthless. Heads of this whole Marxist clique - Palmiro Togliatti and Benito Mussolini were already rumored to leave Naples and head to Marseille, where their French allies would "take care" of them. There was no real resistance, as most Republican forces were surrendering immediately when freed from Red supervision. Many units were simply rising against political comissaries - sent by Central Comitee to "maintain high morale and ideological purity".
Last words from Comrade Togliatti to Southerners were transmitted by radio on 23rd August. Supposedly civilians were called to defend Naples, which soon was to be reinforced by fifty thousands Italians and French allies.
Neither came there and in the end only two thousands soldiers(!) tried to defend city from Third Legion. City surrendered after three hours and citizens of Napoli flooded the streets to greet Papal warriors.
Six days later, on 29th August, reserve units of Etrusco Operation attacked mountainous fortresses on the border. With no food, ammunition and will to fight for their already fallen oppressor, garrisons there surrendered without a fight.
On 1st September Tenth Legion crossed Strait of Messina and appeared in Reggio di Calabria. This feat would not be possible without Navy's support, which defeated Republican navy twice. According to Federation's intelligence, on 2nd September Republican Army HQ called for evacuation of all forces to France. Admiral Campioni was preparing to top this glorious victory with onslaught of Marxists in Messina Strait. This time however main French Mediterranean Fleet left its base in Toulon for once to escort fleeing navy. Campioni tried his best, however, one of navy's prides - battleship Leonardo da Vinci had been sunk by overwhelming French force.
"It was to be expected." - Innitzer responded calmly during War Council meeting in his secret Gothic church in Tuscany.
"Campioni completed his task, so he can return to Firenze now."
The last act of Second Risorgimento War was the battle of Taranto, from where Marxist officials and generals were still fleeing to France. A lone People's Guard division was annihilated in no time.
After 38 days of concentrated, rapid assault against crippling Red Italy, Operation 'Etrusco' has ended with complete success. Pope Innitzer was most impressed with the fact that Legions involved in operation fulfilled his best case plan and subdued Marxists in less than forty days.
On 11th September of 1939, after elimination of last resistance pockets Holy See officially proclaimed annexation of Socialist Italian Republic. In his speech Innitzer stated that "as long as future of Europe is uncertain" Papacy will take control of new provinces in the south, organized in Papal duchies of Calabria, Benevento, Apulia, Napoli and Sicilia.
The first to congratulate the victory over Marxists were Innitzer's fellow Kaisers from Germany and Austria. While Otto limited his congratulations to just a short note of Italian bravery and need to counter anti-Christian threats, Wilhelm was somewhat weirdly excited about this victory. He invited Innitzer, notabene Austrian cardinal to Berlin, offered organizing Itlaian-German victory parade...
First month of war was enough to break poor Kaiser. Enemies whom he bested and claimed superiority over once also wanted to follow France and reclaim what their considered theirs. And indeed Reich's weakness could be seen in these days easily. At first Germans didn't react to Russian coup and sneaky takeover of White Ruthenia. Chancellor von Papen simply "accepted will of Ruthenian people" when a parliament in Minsk, encircled by Russian paramilitaries voted for unification with Russia.
France and Russia both proved that Mitteleuropa is slowly falling on its knees. A week later Japanese Empire, humilliated during First Weltkrieg and then during German intervention in China decided to act when it was possible. Japanese ultimatum has been refused by Kaiser and war in the Far East has started. A week later combined British-Swedish fleet approached and bombarded Aalborg.
Second Weltkrieg was getting more and more interesting minute after minute.
Whether Germans will have any forces to spare for any of new fronts, it remains highly questionable.
After successful ending of Etrusco Innitzer ordered most of his Legions to be rebased North. With new reinforcements for Badoglio's Wall in Piemonte and slowly approaching autumn - and then winter - Franco-Italian border would be completely safe. No sane general would ever decide to attack mountainous forts packed with thousands of soldiers.
But we know that Marxists are not sane people and with Satan's help they might open Gates of Hell so better stay tuned and observe French moves.
Phoney war continued on land, but not on the sea. One of British fleets arrived to Toulon and immediately was dispatched to harass Italian coastal cities. Bombardments of Pisa from 11th and 17th September ravaged its port and harmed Italian Navy badly. Innitzer agreed that there is no reason to waste ships like that and Admiral Campioni led whole navy to safe harbour in Venice. The ships were safe, but British airplanes were patrolling and bombarding coast of Tuscany and Corsica consistently.
Innitzer, he knew it would happen anyway. The solution was simple: abandon the coast and move to central Italy, or even better - enlist in army and take your revenge soon!
Rest of September and October were silent. Except of occassional British raids, no fighting was going on. Pietro Badoglio with 35 divisions under his command was drawing up a bigger plan of breaking through Alps next spring. Admiral Campioni remained in Venice and supervised repairs of his precious ships. Innitzer was rarely leaving his secret church's tower, reflecting upon war events and brainstorming all possible strategies and outcomes that could decide about Papacy's victory or defeat.
And fighting in Westfront was reaching its apogee. Demons of Verdun and Somme returned again to roam through the land and plunge disaster. French surprise offensive through Belgium have completely failed and bogged down. Bloody showdown, which costed each side thousands of lives each day was consuming a lot of cannon fodder. There was never enough meat to feed to this death machine and eventually both German and French divisions were ending up completely obliterated.
Mutually assured destruction of both hated systems is something Innitzer hoped for the most...

Oh, look, I am on fire. But I have nothing better to do, so why not Innitzer?
@Nein
Yeah, I would hate to run for that VP in Palermo and delay the victory for too long. Landing in Sicilia made this war around two-three weeks shorter.
@Finnische
Well, hello sire. No worry, I still have enough time to kill this AAR again, and return again, and stop again, and return, and stop...so don't get your hopes high sire.
@Legolas
Well, hell yeah they are, who doesn't like total military destruction of universe? It's what we all need!
