Revival of Russia, Part 3

The Worldwide Reaction

New Year's eve, 2003

ScreenSave10.jpg

"And so, at the dawn of a new year, comes a new era!
Russia will not stand the Ukranian aggresivity against Belarus. Our forces have to intervene.
The terror Ukraine represents towards it's neighbours must be stopped now, before the war escalates! That's why Russia will force the Ukranian army to surrender, not for territorial gains. Happy 2004."
Putin turned around and walked out, Carl, and the other journalists were stunned, was this real?
It seemed more like a nightmare, Putin had summoned the journalists to the Kremlin, everyone had assumed it was going to be the usual New Year's eve speech, but it hadn't been, Putin had just declared war on Ukraine...

2 January, 2004

New York Times said:
Yesterday our president adressed the country, condemning Russian actions in Ukraine, and announcing that Latvia and Estonia were now part of the coalition forces together with the USA, UK, Turkey, Slovakia, Iraq and Afghanistan. Putin only reacted by letter, once again defending his actions with the argument that Ukraine was the agressor in this war, not Russia.

Our reporter in the Kremlin, Carl Johnson, has his own views on the matter:
I believe that Putin thinks that what he is doing in Eastern Russia, will go entirely unpunished, seeing as how the public opinion in the USA is isolationist now that the war effort in Iraq is failing. I do think that Russia will not occupy Ukraine, but merely set it up as a satellite state.
Putin should however, not count upon much more tolerance of his belligerenent ways if he continues to be this interventionist in future conflicts in Eastern Europe.

CHIRAC.jpg
Jacques Chirac climbed the stage, camera's flashing all around, the president of France walked up to the microphone and started his speech by clearing his throat.
He was acting in his new function as head of the EU, not as president of France.
He started speaking:
"France and Russia have always been quite close, same as all of Europe we depend upon them for our gas and oil, and this has not changed by the war in Ukraine, what has changed is the dormant state in which Russia has been for so long.
Many accuse Putin of warmongering and have a vision of the rebirth of the Iron Curtain. But I am not one of the many, nor is my colleague Gerhard Schröder. The EU will not intervene, nor will we allow US forces to use our supplies in case they do intervene, for we see the intervention of Russia as an action of peacekeeping. I salute you all, my friends and colleagues."
Chirac left the stage, he had (unwittingly) changed the world for ever.

Putin bent over the report of his staff, and examined how much of Russia's production was going to the war effort right now, he estimated about 20%, not counting the modernising of the army, which had been started in early 2003. "Very good, with a minimal amount of strain on our industry we're able to provide our troops with all they need, although oil is a bit of a problem, it probably won't become a real issue. Are there any reports about the battle for Stalino?"

"Yes sir, there are." Kormiltsev answered handing Putin a letter from Baluevsky, reporting how the army had fared against the Ukranians.

Baluevsky in his command center in Rostov, just before the invasion started.

Field Marshal Baluevsky said:
The attack on Stalino was swift, my army pushed trough with ease, our mechanized infrantry engaged their infrantry, while our tanks encircled them.
My army and General Moltensko's task force split up, but before we had even left Stalino, a counter-attack from 2 Crimean divisions startled us, for we hadn't expected the Ukranian army to be so mobile, soon though, they were crushed too and the 3 divisions of Ukraine were retreating into the Crimean peninsula.
As per plan I will follow them South and force the Ukranian army into a full rout into the Crimean peninsula, making them surrender as they reach the coast and General Moltensko will try to seize Kiev. One might believe my conviction for this cause is less strong because I am Ukranian but nothing is less true, my conviction for the Russian cause remains unwavering as ever.

Sladislakow had a grin on his face once again, after Chirac had announced that the EU did not see the intervention of Russia as a true invasion of Ukraine but as a mission of peacekeeping, Bush had almost thrown a fit.
For not only was he no longer supported by his own people, but the EU also disapproved of his foreign policy.

"Mr. President, is this intervention of Russia in Ukraine not very similar to yours against the Taliban in Afghanistan, but you condemn the actions of Russia, saying Putin is a dangerous man and that he only wants to revive the SU of old." Sladislakow asked, after 4 similar but less direct questions like these. Bush's answer was complex, and took 10 minutes to be finished, but in fact it was incoherent and it was obvious Bush realised it was true, he was being a hypocrite. Once again the president of the United States had lost face, and his motion to start an embargo against Russia in the UN was absolutely shot down and the parliament of the USA decided against the proposal of sending weapons, oil and supplies to Ukraine.

Russia's campaign could go on unchallenged, and the stunned leaders of Ukraine now realised that they should've never started a war with Belarus, not even over a dispute so serious, but they had never expected Russia's response to be so quick and brutal.
But the North was weak and the Belarussians had run out of oil, would they be able to break through the line and force a white peace upon Russia?
Only time would tell...

Revival of Russia, Part 4

The 'Pacification' of Ukraine

5 January, 2004

ScreenSave16.jpg
After months of haggling, Iran concedes to Russian demands

"I have been able to get the Iranians to concede military control, my lord." Lenninson reported, after a very long silence on his part, Putin had no longer even thought a breakthrough was possible, but it seemed he had underestimated the potential of his protégé.
"Is that so? And what, if I may ask, did they ask in return?" Putin enquired.
"A nuke"
Putin was completely taken by surprise and after a 5 minute long silence...
"Tell Khomeini I agree, this nuclear device will be disguised as foreign aid, and sent to where he specifies by train, as long as I get those Iranian divisions, NOW" Putin hung up after Leninsson's acknowledgment and sat back in his chair, all wasn't going as planned...

8 January, 2004
Leninsson had been sent to the Northern front by Putin, he didn't like it here, it was cold, the entire Ukranian plane had been frozen, and the forces were stretched extremely thin, so thin Belarussian support would be vital, and he was going to have to travel to Minsk soon, and try to get Putin's plans approved by the cumbersome Belarussian parliament...

He had achieved much, from a lowly courier to personal protégé of the Lord of Russia, Putin had don' much for him, but Leninsson had proved a very skilled man, convincing the Persians, and now becoming supreme commander of the Northern Task Force.
But he still lived in the shade, no one knew who he was or where he came from, only Putin himself knew everything about him.
He had taken care of that little problem by bribing the archivist long before ever becoming Putin's protégé.
No one would ever use his background against him, Putin would never know...

Kuroyedov had great news for Putin, the navy had won a deciding battle in the Sea of Azov and was chasing the Ukranian navy to the Black Sea itself, soon Crimean forces would be shelled into shelter by the Black Sea Fleet, making it harder for them to escape capture by Baluevsky. The entire war was going their way, especially now that the air force was bombing Kiev and it's suburbs and the entire Northern line, soon Belarus would be able to break through and then Ukraine would fall completely.

11 January, 2004

Putin received the reports from Leninsson by fax, he had only been able to flee from the Ukranians in Zhoblin by leaving his armed escort and go to Minsk by train, this had enlengthened his travel time by a day, but he had made it, only just escaping the ambush at the airport in Zhoblin.
Once he arrived in Minsk he had immediately requested an update from Belarus asking how much resources the country had left, and what he received wasn't positive, Belarus had ran out of oil 3 weeks ago, and had only been able to survive because it was winter and the Ukranians advanced slowly, if Russia hadn't entered the war, it would've been all over by February.

ScreenSave19.jpg
Notice the forces in Zhlobin and the division that is about to take Vyshgorod

Now Leninsson demanded that Belarussia would give him control over all forces they had left, meanwhile he sent an envoy to the 2 divisions of paratroopers stationed in Kaluga, they would have to make for Gomel as fast as possible, to defend it from the 2 Ukranian motorized infrantry divisions in Zhlobin, if they would get there on time was the question, meanwhile he sent another fax to Putin, demanding an immediate transfer of 5k oil to Belarussia, he would need their helicopters to be active, as they would be the spearhead in his actions in Zhlobin.

14 January, 2004

After doing that Leninsson further inspected the Ukranian-Belarussian border, and all the latest photographs taken from a Belarrussian scout plane, he concluded now was the time for an ambitious strike on Lvov by Belarussian forces in Brest Litovsk, on the farmost Western side of the border.
At the same time he received news from Chernigov, Vyshgorod would soon fall to his mechanized infrantry and then he'd be able to encircle the 2 Ukranian divisions in Zhlobin, destroying their chances on a drive into the heartlands.

ScreenSave21.jpg
Vyshgorod falls to our mechanized infrantry

ScreenSave18.jpg
Ukranians stop us at Priluki

But that was not the only news he received, before he could order the Belarussians to move on Lvov, an envoy from the lieutenant leading the armoured division in Konotop arrived, his forces had been beat some time ago, in a counter-attack on Priluki from Kiev, he excused himself for the late warning the plans to secure the Dnjepr had failed, but his forces had been in a full retreat and he had been scrambling to reassemble them.
The envoy also mentioned that it had been due to the dominance of the airforce that the forces of Ukraine hadn't crossed the river and pressed their advantage, it would have cost them too many lives, the bombers were too dominant and had already wiped out an entire division in the South.
Leninsson grimaced, would the line hold? He glanced once again at the map he had pinned to the wall in his office...

ScreenSave20.jpg
A map showing the most important provinces in and around Ukraine and who controls them.

Thought I'd make up for the lack of Leninsson a bit.

This is all very nice, but i would be very happy to see a scenario with events and everything EXACTLY the same as it is in our world. I mean to do correctly Africa, allocataion of oil, rare, metal all these. Number or division and their names, just as in real HoI in 1936, same but in 2006, let's say, how do u think? (with exact number of ICBMs and nukes)

With the exact number of nukes, we'd be able to nuke EVERY SINGLE province in the world 5 times over (if not more) and a place like Congo, who wouldn't get nuked, would become the superpower, not a very good idea, also, I'll play to 2019, if I haven't conquered the world by then, so I wouldn't worry about it becoming unrealistic, it's normal ;)

The early versions of MDS had realistic Africa, Central America, etc. and ran terribly. Like, 5 seconds per game hour.

Not a single reply to my updates? I'm depressed.....
Anyhow, another update coming up tonight.

Don't worry.
Most of the typical AAR-reader is to lazy to comment the updates.
The're just enyoing them ;)
