Finally. The “Summer War” had turned into something much bloodier – far more bloody than Hitler had originally planned for. The Allied had prove a much more hardy and stubborn enemy than expected – he had to give them that. Still, now they were vanquished. France was gone and the Brits had lost seven divisions, the Canadians two, and the two French expeditionary divisions were stuck deep within France. The Allies had fared badly in the end.
Hitler felt confident. He even partook in a parade in Paris. France had been dealt a blow, to body and soul, and the road to the Third Reich lay open.
Apparently, the Soviet Union wanted a bigger piece of the cake. They attacked the poor Finns. Why? What’s in Finland? Hitler was somewhat suspicious. But let Stalin believe he is a mighty commander by subduing a small northern country; Let him feel relaxed; Let him celebrate. It time, he will be put to the ultimate test. Let’s see who celebrates then….
In fact, Hitler had some plans for small northern countries himself. Denmark was vital to close the Baltic Sea. The thought was dropping paratroopers in Odense and Århus simultaneously and then, when the Danes had surrendered, walk into Copenhagen from Guldborgssund. It would be over within days.
Hitler feared that Zidston Churchill would have placed a fleet in Kattegat with troops onboard, ready to rush ashore in Odense. Aerial reconnaissance did not find any fleet in Kattegat except some radio traffic from a possible submarine.
The plan was to strike quickly after the fall of France, when the Brits were still in disorder and possibly had their focus on Spain towards which German troops were moving – more or less stealthily.
However. The German plan had several flaws. They thought that their limited declaration of war would bring in the Danes into the Allies and thus making it possible for Italy to attack them. One of Germany’s two paratroop divisions had been put under Italian command to utilize their transport planes. It turned out that Denmark was still at peace with Italy and due to USAs sensitive attitude Japan firmly argued against a Italian declaration of war on Denmark. This – the Wehrmacht had effectively lost one important paratroop division.
So – it was deemed that the panzer would reach Århus quickly enough and the present paras were sent to Odense. Wrong again. It was winter. The Panzers moved very slowly. And then we have Guldborgssund… It is safe to say that this was not Germany’s finest hour….
