Didn't Germany go with the MR pact? If so, it should have six months to play in France without worries.

The Allies did what they are supposed to do: make Germany fight for every inch of ground, and force them to waste time and Manpower. Big question will be what the Soviet warplan is.

Great game so far. Looks like both sides are playing tight and no major mistakes have been made. Assuming the Russians will decide they can't save the French, where will the Axis look to take the initiative next? British capabilities seem quite impressive thus far. Gibraltar could be a tough nut to crack this game.

The Wehrmacht was spilling southwards east of France. Originally, the western passage had been intended but as the Brits were standing there so stubbornly the eastern passage had been deemed the better choice. It seemed that was a good call. The French did not prove to half the problem the Brits had pose. Also, it was a large land and the French became too thin trying to cover it all.

The Italians played their role well, causing chaos on the far eastern part of France. Not only did they make it hard for the French to coordinate a flowing retreat, they also continuously threatened the French supply lines. So far, the French managed to avoid getting trapped.

One of the more important battles was the one about the Montargis region. If it could be won, Germany had an open route through all the French rivers. Montargis was won and with that was the last hope for France gone.

A few French divisions were caught and destroyed in Sens although the majority got away. Further east, there was still a struggle about that sack.

In Paris the epic battle had just started. The French capital was stacked with determined and fairly rested infantry. The Germans were just as determined and had sent quite a few panzer divisions into the city. Cities are far from optimal for panzers but the Germans simply had no respect for the French anti-tank capability and Erwin Rommel pressed on ruthlessly and several units of panzers reached the Eifel Tower, cutting through the supply train and causing havoc with the French communication lines.

A majority of Europe is in the Axis grip – and France is about to fall. It was clear now, that Stalin had chose caution before aggressiveness. Hitler’s plan seemed to work after all.

Finally. The “Summer War” had turned into something much bloodier – far more bloody than Hitler had originally planned for. The Allied had prove a much more hardy and stubborn enemy than expected – he had to give them that. Still, now they were vanquished. France was gone and the Brits had lost seven divisions, the Canadians two, and the two French expeditionary divisions were stuck deep within France. The Allies had fared badly in the end.

Hitler felt confident. He even partook in a parade in Paris. France had been dealt a blow, to body and soul, and the road to the Third Reich lay open.

Apparently, the Soviet Union wanted a bigger piece of the cake. They attacked the poor Finns. Why? What’s in Finland? Hitler was somewhat suspicious. But let Stalin believe he is a mighty commander by subduing a small northern country; Let him feel relaxed; Let him celebrate. It time, he will be put to the ultimate test. Let’s see who celebrates then….

In fact, Hitler had some plans for small northern countries himself. Denmark was vital to close the Baltic Sea. The thought was dropping paratroopers in Odense and Århus simultaneously and then, when the Danes had surrendered, walk into Copenhagen from Guldborgssund. It would be over within days.

Hitler feared that Zidston Churchill would have placed a fleet in Kattegat with troops onboard, ready to rush ashore in Odense. Aerial reconnaissance did not find any fleet in Kattegat except some radio traffic from a possible submarine.

The plan was to strike quickly after the fall of France, when the Brits were still in disorder and possibly had their focus on Spain towards which German troops were moving – more or less stealthily.

However. The German plan had several flaws. They thought that their limited declaration of war would bring in the Danes into the Allies and thus making it possible for Italy to attack them. One of Germany’s two paratroop divisions had been put under Italian command to utilize their transport planes. It turned out that Denmark was still at peace with Italy and due to USAs sensitive attitude Japan firmly argued against a Italian declaration of war on Denmark. This – the Wehrmacht had effectively lost one important paratroop division.

So – it was deemed that the panzer would reach Århus quickly enough and the present paras were sent to Odense. Wrong again. It was winter. The Panzers moved very slowly. And then we have Guldborgssund… It is safe to say that this was not Germany’s finest hour….

The March on Århus was painfully slow. I did not matter now as the Brits had moved as much as 8 brigades of motorized infantry into Copenhagen. The Danish capital would not fall anytime soon. The sky above the strategic city was criss crossed by the smoke trails of a myriad of fighters battling for superiority.

In Århus, the Danes put a short and completely hopeless fight against two German Panzer divisions. They got completely crushed with a fearsome rate at about 35 dead Danes for every German. It was a slaughter

It is a New Year. For the Allies and civilians in Copenhagen it offered no new hope. It was cold, many had lost their homes and the battle for air superiority continued. Much of the fighting had to be done above the thick clouds as the windy and snowy conditions closer to ground was close to unbearable for the fighter pilots. The numerous dog fights could have passed by unnoticeable for the civilians if it wasn’t for the occasional smoke-tailed plane which broke the clouds and crashed down into the great city or some of its suburbs.

Air Bourne Intelligence reported Canadians landing in Helsingör, obviously moving towards Copenhagen. With all the busted infrastructure an layers of snow and ice it was no fast march.

Although the weather cleared up and the temperature rose somewhat to still freezing -1,5 or so, the Brits were suffering. Many died on the beaches and the wet clothing became death traps as they were claimed by ice. Moreover, the first seal of the Brits had died of and instead they faced a highly adaptable foe who made the best of their few numbers and managed to force focus skillfully. The Brits called of the attack after about a week loosing almost a thousand men in a very unfavorable ratio towards the Germans.

Just hours after the Brits pulled out of Guldborgssund the Canadians attacked. They came four divisions strong with infantry supported by anti-tank guns. Perhaps they thought the Germans to be tired. Perhaps they thought them to be just dug in, waiting. No, the brave German infantry counter-attacked the Canadians right there on the freezing beached of Guldborgssund. It was an epic charge that drove several companies right down into the cold water. However, General Behlendorff’s men were pestered by naval artillery from the Royal Navy and lost men to the powerful blast that could hit them over the entire island.

Stuka bombers made a few raids on a French navy patrolling the Pommerian Coast. During one of the runs they were intercepted by British CAGs but they only managed to shoot down a few of the dive bombers who in turn managed to damage several of the French ships.
