Like I have said before, I am opposed to size- and shape deviation, as it plays a major role in ruining warfare outside Europe in the current game.
If the movement- and combat system is adapted to 100 km * 100 km provinces, it will most likely neither cope with 5 km * 5 km nor 500 km * 500 km provinces.
Provinces are still at least 100 by 100 km big. Can you name me one city of that size that existed in 1936? Perhaps today we got Tokyo-Yokohama megacities that can get close but nothing back in 36.
I wish to comment specifically on the Berlin issue as a cold-war modder. Although there is a part of me that would like to see 2 Berlins, think of all the problems it might cause the AI, as West Berlin would have to be air-supplied all the time and not just during the Berlin airlift. What would you do? Give West Germany military access to East Germany?
The way I do this in my own Cold War setup is to give Berlin to East Germany and compensate by giving half of the effective IC to West Germany--DDR has a negative industrial modifier while DFR has a positive industrial modifier. You can also give manpower modifiers.
I think one Berlin is better. Mod West Berlin through events, free values and the like.
I hope Korea, Israel/Palestine and Indochina have more provinces. They were not the scene of major WW2 fighting but were important in Cold War conflicts. Cold war is not the major point of HOI3 but I think people will want to mod this. I also hope they at least double the number of Japanese provinces. Can we see an Asia map please?
It does not only seem to be true, it IS true. Eisenhüttenstadt was build as a socialist archetype city in the Stalin era and doesnt belong on a WWII era map!!!
