Hmm, I am thinking that it might be prudent to keep Romania out of the inevitable war, so as to avoid a large front with the Russkies. Keeping a narrow front and using the Pripet Marshes as a tank trap would be an excellent defensive strategy, wouldn't it?

a revived byzantium?! WHAT?! That's awesome. It makes me sad I can't do that in my HOI3 games :(

Chapter 11 - Rom Ist Unser

April, 1941. I couldn't keep dealing with the giant line that is Bohemia, controlled by Czechoslovakia, that is drawn directly through Deutschland. It was simply too big of a logistical obstruction. First, I delivered a short speech to my ministers, which was recorded and broadcasted, proclaiming the Sudetenland and Bohemia were rightfully Deutschland's territory. Then, I sent out the orders to the men - I would declare war to claim the Sudetenland and Bohemia on the 11th and the vehicles would start rolling and the men marching 5 hours later. Sure enough, by simply marching a corps of infantry in through an unguarded opening in the south I quickly overran their forces, and with Poland's help split the country in half. After this, I sued for peace - Sudetenland and Bohemia, along with the replacement of the government, in return for Slovakia possibly having Bohemia returned at some point in the future. With their armies fully destroyed and the nation too far away diplomatically from the Allied forces to ask for help, they agreed. And, sure enough, George II had used his military show of force at the Romanian border to demand any territories south of the Danube from them. It didn't really surprise me, nor did it surprise me that it worked. No doubt this would spark considerable revanchism in the government and population of Romania, though.

June 3, 1941. Wilhelm the second died in the Netherlands today, after swearing not to return to Germany unless the monarchy was restored. Well, good luck with that, my friend, but we have other things to worry about. About a week ago I met with George II of the 'Byzantine Empire' and he seemed quite agitated. He wanted to discuss the invasion of Italy. In the end I lent a corps of armor to the Italian front and agreed to take part in this war. Italy wasn't about to be peacefully annexed by this empire of his, but their military was reeling. With the help of the Greeks we took Rome by December.

HoI3_72.bmp

We secured a swift victory in several key locations, and after the Greeks beat back the Italian armies, our Panzers quickly rushed to secure Naples. Sure enough, within two weeks the Italians threw down their arms. How and why they surrendered to the horde of Greek infantry, and one corps of Deutschland's Panzers I don't know.

HoI3_77.bmp

After this victory was secured, the Greeks, rebranding themselves the Romans of the SPQR, claimed they would have no further territorial demands. Somehow, I didn't feel quite right about that. In addition they moved the seat of their government to Rome, as it was "the classic and proper capital of their empire". Really it was an excuse to quietly exile the Pope and completely take over Italy. Come to think of it, I remember George II mentioning something about trying to mend the Great Schism. How he would do that after nearly two thousand years of the two major halves of Christianity being split I don't know.

HoI3_86.bmp

The new borders looked rather nice even if I do say so myself.

HoI3_93.bmp

With holdings in Africa, Asia, Europe and their own 'Mare Nostrum' nearly secured, it looked as if the SPQR would shape up to be a powerful ally. However, I was beginning to be seriously worried, since the rest of the territory of the old Roman Empire was controlled by countries that were in the Allied forces, save for the Iberian peninsula, and Deutschland itself controls some territory south of the Danube, which is their primary border.

be really scared: you have a lot of Roman lands

Hungary and Romania should be scared and rush to join any camp. SPQR would rather swallow them than let them remain on their borders. If nothing else, they could rush through Persia.
I wonder what stats that empire has, ie IC, manpower gain etc...

Story/plan spoilers:
I'm intending to bring Hungary, Romania, Belgium, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Poland, and (maybe) Switzerland into the Axis as puppets, functioning like autonomous regions. I'll use a mod event to auto-inherit them all afterwards whenever a war comes, and when that war ends they'll be re-puppeted. A patch-work empire if you will, though I may turn this whole thing into a democracy later, and each would be joined together with Germany itself. Also, an interesting fact: All of my armies, save for those on the Maginot line, are all just these giant death-stacks.

We need to go deeper!
I made Greece do everything beyond DOWing Bulgaria, so I'll prevent them from overstepping their classic borders.

Resource spoilers:
SPQR:
IC 222
Leadership 24.70
19.6 monthly gain manpower
Germany:
IC 327
Leadership 35.55
14.5 monthly gain manpower

Yup, Stalin's in trouble.

EDIT: Ave Caesar! If you aren't careful, the new Roman Empire is gonna outshine you. Quite frankly they're the ones making this AAR most interesting. xD All the same, a hearty congratulations to the newly crowned Augustus Georgios I, founder of the Schleswig-Holstein Dynasty!

That isn't going to happen!

Chapter 12 - Deutschland Ist Immer

OOC: Sorry folks, some of my screenshots got deleted because the game is weird about screenshots sometimes.

November, 1941. Things have been quite as of yet, but my spies in Rome report marching orders for the Roman troops - They're being loaded into transports and being shipped off to the shore of the Iberian peninsula. I saw this coming, though I didn't think it would be this soon. I'm a bit apprehensive - I haven't spoken to George II in a while, and I don't know what to make of this all. He's gutsier than I thought, I'll give him that.

March, 1942. It happened just as I expected - A day after the declaration of war was sent out, they landed three divisions of infantry just outside of Porto, stormed inland, and met positively zero resistance - reports indicate the Portuguese didn't even have a single infantryman prepared to fight. As a show of good faith, George II gave all the Portuguese holdings in Africa to Deutschland, and turned over any holdings in Asia and Oceania to England. I sent a division of infantry, and several budding politicians who weren't afraid to work in Africa for the prestige that comes from such a hostile environment, to restore Mittelafrika. Quite simply - a puppet nation to Deutschland that was autonomous. I also sent some laborers to construct several factories in the new capital of Benguela.

September, 1942. It was time to rattle my saber. I positioned several elite and disguised infantry divisions near the border with Denmark, and during the night of the 16th marched them in, taking Tonder and Sonderborg easily. The day afterward, I negotiated the release of these territories to Deutschland with the Danes, in return for possible protection against any threats.

April, 1943. The autocratic and fascist parties had secured strong positions in both America and Canada! I convinced the new Canadian leader to join the Axis, while the new, more diplomatic American president was more hesitant, preferring to slowly drift our direction instead. A great day for Deutschland - if the Americans are on our side, with their ridiculous industrial capabilities we would be unstoppable!

June, 1943. It was time for action. The Romans were already almost strong enough to take on Deutschland - this was simply unacceptable. I couldn't take the risk. It was time for some more drastic measures. First thing's first: I positioned IX Panzerarmee along the Hungarian border. Then, to secure Slovakia, 3. SS-Standarte 'Der Fuhrer' swooped into Bratislava, secured the ministers of Slovakia, and took care to make sure they followed our orders. Rather than truly ruling Slovakia, now they were spread out to govern it and Bohemia-Moravia. At last, the goal I had sought all along is within my grasp: A true great Deutschland which ruled from the Black Sea to the Channel. But first, we'd have to tread lightly lest the Soviet Union snap at last, though I suspected that would be difficult with what I was about to do...

It's bright. I prefer there to be a few clouds but for the purpose of this speech the clear sky is preferable. As I look down at the citizens below, I see some of them - some are cheering, others wait patiently and wonder what I'll say. I see a few reporters taking notes near the front. Before I do anything else, I look at my watch. 11:56 AM. Perfect. I step up to the podium, and look down upon them all.

"Ladies and gentlemen. Citizens of the great nation of Deutschland. I have an important announcement to make.

In one hour, our quest to secure Eastern Europe against the menace of the demented 'worker's paradise' will begin. I have met Mikhail Kalinin, the puppet of Josef Stalin. I have met Vyacheslav Molotov, who insulted us and our Polish allies by proposing to once again destroy their nation and subjugate their people.

Josef Stalin, the delusional man he is, seeks only one thing: The conquest of the whole of Europe. He will not rest until he has either cast his scarlet shroud over our continent, or lies buried in the ground. He and his minions hide behind words such as 'peace' and 'equality', yet they seek only to enslave the world. Deutschland cannot rest until the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics has been either dissolved or crippled, be it at the hands of its own people or those of another nation.

Therefore, we stand as guardians of the West. But if we are to succeed, we must become stronger. The only way to do this is to expand. It is unfortunate that we must use war to do this, but our next goal shall be simple: We shall reform the Österreichisch-Ungarische kingdom, and unite it as one with our own nation.

Success in this endeavour shall prove us fit to protect Europe from all threats--be they imperialist or proletarian, bonapartist or fascist, anarchist or radical. And when it has ended, the nations we have united under one flag shall return to Europe as sovereign states, united by a grand alliance. Deutschland too shall be a nation of equals, bearing the right to choose their rulers. But until we have secured the Fatherland from the Red hordes, we must be ready. A military leader must be at the helm. Today is the day we prepare."

I can hear it behind me - five squadrons of our latest fighters heading up five squadrons of our latest bombers, about to fly right over my head. A dramatic touch to the speech.

Right on time.

"Deutschland Ist Immer!"

nice! finally some action! (for Deutschland at least... the Greeks/Byzantines/Romans had more than enough)

Excellent! I really enjoyed this update. However, I felt that the speech declaring war on the Soviets could have been improved. I have made some revisions to it and shall post my version here as a suggestion. Let me know what you think. =)

Restoring the Austro-Hungarian Empire brings you into direct conflict with the Romans. Some of the territory they have belonged to the Austrians.

It would make up for a nice spin to be backstabbed half-way into the Soviet Union by the traitorious Romans! :D

Chapter 13 - Ich Sehe Das Ende

"...Chancellor, if we try to attack the Soviet Union we'll just get thrown against a wall and beaten!"

"I know that already, Mister Bayerlein. That's why there's approximately 40 thousand anti-tank guns on the border."

I let out a tiny chuckle at that.

"Well? Any ideas? We need to do something besides just wait."

"Chancellor, if I may interject..."

It was the chief of the kriegsmarine, Conrad Albrecht.

June, 1944. We're about to begin, but we must not be hasty. Over the past months I've been working on a project, not so secretly, along the entire border between Deutschland and Poland, and the Soviet Union. Fortifications. Sure enough, they had just been completed, although I had overlooked the border with Latvia I doubted the Soviet Union would attack through there - More probably they'd charge through Poland and try to divide our forces. But I still had a plan. A two front war. The lands of Deutschland would remain secure through the war, but we'd open a new front in Vladivostok with the help of the American navy, after I ensured Stalin would misinterpret what we were going to do.

HoI3_149.bmp

I had multiple corps positioned along the entire front, although I didn't trust Poland quite as much when I noticed a small bit left unguarded. The Polish high command stated it was because it was 'literally impassable', although I didn't believe them.

HoI3_152.png

September, 1944. Sure enough, I declared war on the Soviet Union, and Poland followed suit. Stalin, with our alliance with the United States quite strong, thought he would be attacked by them as well. In the blunder of the century, he declared war on the US. Two weeks later, a corps of mechanized infantry rolled into Vladivostok, facing literally no resistance, with several corps of Marine raiders waiting on the boats. We quickly pushed inland, cutting off the Soviet access to the Pacific ocean within a month. Meanwhile, Poland was holding, for the time being, against the Soviets, and they did not even attempt to attack my lines. The Maginot line of the east, you might call it.

HoI3_157.bmp

November, 1944. The strangest thing has been happening - under our occupation policies, all occupied zones are ruled over by a single small government based in Vladivostok. We expected more resistance and a stronger fight from the Soviet Union, but some of the Soviet brigades have practically defected! It seems the Russians tend to stay more loyal, but the people of the Caucasus and Siberia don't seem to care about the Union in the slightest, and even welcome our arrival. If the west holds, this might be easier than I expected. Still, I didn't want to just recruit former Soviet divisions into our forces, so I sent them towards the American lines farther north, and informed Washington of the situation.

Yay, more missing screenshots! Thanks, HOI3! Most of the shots of my progress through Siberia are missing thanks to some weird bug that replaces those shots with the first one I took, the shot of the border with Poland and SU.
