Can a monarchy become a republic?

You can theoretically do it by letting barbarians fully siege down your land (good luck doing that if you're any size), which will flip your government type to a migratory tribe and put the leader of the invading barbarian army in charge of the nation.

Note that unless you're a tiny nation at the edges of a bunch of unsettled land (i.e., near Central Europe) it will be all but impossible to attract enough barbs to make it happen, but it can be done.

Apropos of nothing, getting rid of all other tags on the map but yourself will result in vast hordes of endless barbs raining down upon you, one of the only ways to see this actually happen.

Did you know that barbs have a maximum range (I think it's based on adjacent regions or some such) from their spawn region they'll go to? When there are no valid territories to siege down within range, barbs will just stick around in their home regions. This means you'll end up colonizing into a new region and all the barbs suddenly in range will "wake up" and swarm in. 20 stacks of 10k+ barbs is... not fun.

As mentioned its not in the game at present but there totally should be a realistic way as that's what happened to several monarchies before the timeline of Imperator. And also what happened to at least one monarchy during Imperator's timeline in the case of Epiros.
