That's a group? No, but I am now! Update will be...yeah...

I'm kind of at EverfreeNW right now. Brony convention in Seattle. So expect...less then my normally slow progress. Also...I need to play another year seeing as how I've now used all my picture til' now.

Here's a little hint for sooner or later.

1847

In the immediate aftermath of the war, Equestria was extremely active. War as it seems, inspires nations to great activities and increased productivity. Ponies went about their lives with a seemingly fresh and vigorous outlook on things, factories produced goods in record numbers, farms were overloaded with record crops as hay and carrots, daffodils and grain all grew in breath-taking numbers. The sheer size of the Equestrian crop of 1847 caused a major dip in world prices, leaving many nations without protectionist tariffs or farm subsidies struggling to support their now meek agricultural sector. Most small nations were hit the hardest, many of the Italian states nearly went bankrupt, along with many of the South American nations, already struggling with the weight of Independence from Spain not but a little over 10 years ago. The sudden damage this caused led many nations to cry out for help, and in a few cases(1) even make hostile calls to arms. Seeing the problems being caused by the extremely great harvest, Celestia decided to bring in a new government that would be more amiable to restricting Equestrian free trade. Although she detested the 'extreme and unrestrained militancy' of the Equestrian Imperialist Faction, she decided that the least she could do was keep the war hawks of the group in check one way or another, and so, on February 7th, 1847 Celestia decreed a change in government, dismissing the previous government headed by Moderates under famed agriculture magnate Sickle Slash and brought in the new government, a heavy mix of Capitalists and Military commanders with the commander of the Mexican expedition, Swan Firecracker heading the new cabinet.

Not dissuaded by the agricultural bomb dropped by the Principality, the Portuguese sent an official request to Celestia in late February, in the form of a telegram delivered through British Canada in order to avoid American tampering. Arriving late on the 21st in Canterlot, It was Luna who took the message and determined it was a worthwhile proposal. The message read as follows;
Valor da aliança foi determinada como de alta, por favor considere acordo militar e político vinculativo a ser assinado logo que possível os meus amigos. Conversações oficiais pode ser realizada quando e onde quiser.
(Value of alliance has been determined as high, please consider binding military and political agreement to be signed as soon as possible my friends. Official talks can be held when and where you please.)
Luna quickly went about penning a reply, stating 'our grateful joy that you would express such interest in becoming closer to our lovely nation is only furthered by the willingness you express to make binding agreements of friendship, as it were, in International relations.' She further went on to ask that such a meeting take place in Canterlot, at the Royal Observatory where Luna often made her residence while she was awake and tending to her royal affairs. She also requested the meeting be as early as was possible at the start of her control, namely about 8PM, due to most humans and ponies going off to bed at about 9PM or so. The meeting began the next day, with the Portuguese consulate residing for the Portuguese, who were all too aware that sending someone from home could take a month or longer. So, under the light of the stars, Luna met with Vicente Geraldo Alves and there they went over potential matters to be covered by the agreement to be ratified later. In the end, after a rather relaxed discussion, military and political agreements were reached, along with a simple agreement that if Portugal was threatened by Equestrian exports (i.e. agricultural goods or other products) then Portugal retained the right to deny the entry of any Equestrian shipping that was deemed an 'Economic danger'. Seeing that all was dealt with accordingly, Mr. Alves retired to the Embassy and Luna went back to her Royal duties. The treaty was messaged to Lisbon the next day and quickly ratified by the King, wherein it returned to Canterlot and was similarly accepted by the Royal Sisters.

The other issue in the aftermath of the war was the demobilization of the military and a majority of it's active personnel. Returning home many found they had no occupation, as factories and farms had found labor to replace them while they were off fighting the war. Returning from war was already a challenge, trying to acclimate to a society made for peace, after enduring firsthand one of the most traumatizing events in Equestrian history, it's hard to imagine there would be many ponies after such an event who weren't emotionally scarred in one way or another. Seeing this and recognizing the potential damage to society if these ponies weren't able to safely re-integrate, quickly ordered for an expansion in housing and industry in the Manehatten-Fillydelphia area to accommodate the returning soldiers. The hope was that by granting them free housing and easily acquired work they might begin to 'normalize' as it was and begin to forget their terrible memories, aside from this, Celestia tasked the famed Nurse Redheart with forming a rudimentary psychological team to assess and attempt to treat any of the ex-soldiers if at all possible. Cement Production was to be expanded at the Fillydelphia Cement Manufacturing Center and a Clipper Shipyard was planned and work began outside of Manehatten that same month. Again, the emotional scars would take time to heal, but Equestria has survived worse.

One of the unforeseen issues of the war was that due to increased contact with humans and their wounded, many ponies came back from the front carrying odd and new viruses and pathogens. One of these diseases that was accidentally returned to Equestria was the Flu (or Influenza). Although it had definitely less serious effects of Ponies, it still had a strong enough effect to hinder production as well as slow the general pace of life in Equestria. The Flu pandemic of 1847 began when a soldier returning from Idaho, a medical Unicorn to be specific, started to have constant coughs while about in the park. It was then determined that a majority of the ponies in the park at the time departed from there with a constant cough among other Flu-like symptoms, although it remained confined to the greater Manehatten urban area, it is estimated that approximately 100,000~ to 130,000~ Ponies caught the Flu at some point in the spread. Quickly it burned out as the Ponies immune systems were far better equipped to handle such things, as well as the diligent work of the Unicorns who researched how to best combat the newly found disease.

The Principality's neighbor to the east seemed to be fairing worse however, in the immediate aftermath of the war, as defeat at the hands of the British and the hooves of the Equestrians did nothing to lower tensions over the slavery issue. In the south, John Brown, a famed advocate of abolition was found guilty of treason after he attempted to raid a Federal Armory at Harper's Ferry. He was unsuccessful however, the raid failed and it's main goal of inciting slave riots across the south was a complete failure. Brown was wounded and captured and 18 others lost their lives in the botched raid. The event further heightened tensions that were previously covered up by the fervor for war with Equestria, and although Celestia was upset by the prospect of a portion of the United States seceding and adhering to strict slavery, she was put in an awkward position where if she expressed support for the Abolitionist movement, she may only serve to further the South's cause and speed the eventual conflict to happen sooner rather then later. Unless the United States was planning another war with Equestria, then Celestia assumed that they would have their hands full already with the agitation in the south.

Celestia made a point to send a congratulatory note to the British as well, as in 1847 the final areas of Canada that had been un colonized were finally settled and allowed territorial status in the British Canadian holdings. This was a good thing for the Equestrians, it made another threat for America to worry about, and hopefully would present a big enough wild card in their planing that they might simply drop the whole 'Manifest Destiny' matter. Only time would really tell though.

So ends the year of our Princess' Eighteen hundred and forty seven, long may they reign and harmony may they bring to our lands!

(1) Most notably in the very aggressive Kingdom of Serbia, where effigies were burned and a declaration of war was nearly made by the King. Only a timely intervention by the King slowed it down to simple angry yelling.

Well, finally did another year. Fantastic.

An alliance with Portugal? Interesting. They don't seem like they can be of much help to you, though, as I don't think they really have the means to invade the USA.

the Portuguese don't need to know they're useless alright? And anyways, they offered to me so I mean whatever...more friends = more fun

You can always hope someone goes insane and attacks them. There's always the possibility of someone wanting their African holdings.

A well written update. I really enjoy reading your AAR.

Oh well crickey-dike! I've forgotten about this entirely! Time to revive it.
