October 7, 1942: The Plains of Mato Grosso

Lt. General Lott studied the map on the table beneath him. It showed his units mere kilometers from the unprotected Bolivian Border. To the north, a Bolivian division defended the province of Perseverencia, and even further north, intellegence said there was a division advancing into the Brazilian Amazon. But none of that changed the fact that Lott and his troops could march into Bolivia without any resistance. He turned to his second in command, "Alright Arturo, inform the men we will begin marching in the morning, i expect us to be at our defensive positions within two weeks, at which point we will consider swinging north into Perseverencia."

"Sir, you realize of course, that that would leave our supply lines completely undefended, the Bolivian unit to the north could cut in behind us simultaneously cutting our supplies and our avenue of retreat."

Lott smiled, and nodded, "Yes, Yes. But war is about risk, my friend. Few people here on this continent understand that. But I've been studying the war in Europe, and I've discovered that motion and manuevers are the kings of battle. By advancing into their territory, we put them on the defensive. Chances are, they wont even think of trying to come in behind us, for that would leave us free to advance further. Not to mention any general would be wary of taking such an obvious opening, expecting me to be setting him up with an attack from forces behind the main line. Not that any such forces exist, but the Bolivians dont know that, now do they? No, once we take the initiative, we will keep it, have no doubt about that."

Arturo spoke up once again, "But sir, maybe we should at least consider leaving the Civilian Guard behind, they wont be all that useful in a real combat anyway."

Lott shook his head, "No, no. You need to stop thinking about the defensive. Bringing them with us creates an impression of a very large force, which we do have, of course, even if part of it is not fully combat capable. Going in half assed will only ask them to attack us. We need our full force, or nothing at all, and I'll have no more questions about it." Lott smiled, "I appreciate your input Arturo, and you know I'm considering your opinion, but you've got to learn to trust me sometimes."

"Yes sir, I'll get the men ready to march," Arturo said as he left Lott's tent. He just hoped that he wasn't wrong to trust in his commander, and that this plan would work, unlike some of Lott's overzealous ideas.

Lott prepares his army for an advance into Bolivia:

That being said, here's the second post i promised:

October 16, 1942: The coast off Porto Alegre

After minor repairs to the fleet, the Brazilian navy is ready to set sail and engage the enemy once again:

Admiral Marais watched the men of the NRB Sao Paulo as the ship steamed into the open waters. The men moved quickly, confidently. Their earlier success over the Argentine navy had emboldened them, and filled them with a feeling of near invincibility. Marais knew this to be a good thing, confident men worked faster, and generally made fewer mistakes. Of course, overconfident men often made more mistakes, but Marais did not think his men were at that stage yet. Even though his men were filled with confidence, Marais was not quite as sure of their future. Granted, the fleet had been successful in their first engagement, even sinking an enemy cruiser with no ship losses of their own. But, there were still four Argentine Battlecruisers out there, each of which had nearly as many guns as his two battleships, and were slightly faster. Of course, they could take far fewer hits than his battleships, but that thought was little comfort.

Just then, the Sao Paulo's radio operator came up to hiim. "Sir, we have a confirmed sighting of an enemy fleet, 2 battlecruisers with escorts."

Marais nodded, "It seems their first defeat didnt hurt them as much as we might have hoped." As he spoke, the captain of the Sao Paulo came up behind him, knowing the admiral would soon be issuing orders. "Well, if they're eager for a fight, I say we give them one. Captain, signal the fleet to stand by to engage the enemy. Push the destroyers out a little further, I don't want any surprises from enemy submarines. And bring the Minas Gerais and the cruisers in a little tighter, this is gonna be one hell of a slugging match, and I want to make sure all the ships can support each other."

The captain nodded to his radio operator, "Make it so." He turned back to Admiral Marais, "We expect to be in range within forty minutes sir."

Marais looked very thoughtful, "Very good, very good......"

5 hours later

Admiral Marais stood up and wiped his sleeve across his lip. The last hit to the Sao Paulo had thrown him to the ground, and he had a few other small bruises and cuts in addition to the one on his lip. The slugging match that Marais predicted had occured, even worse than he thought it was going to be. Two battlecruisers had turned into three, and Marais had been forced to close the distance between the two fleets so that he could even the odds by bringing the guns of his heavy cruisers into range. Even so, it had been a tough thing, but Marais was fairly certain the Brazilians were giving better than they were getting.

The captain of the Sao Paulo was missing from the bridge. A hit the ship had taken earlier had also thrown them all to the floor, and that time the captain had slammed his head against one of the tables. He was probably alright, but he had been taken to sick bay with a suspected concussion. The XO had taken command of the ship then, and it was that man that approached Marais now. "Sir, the Minas Gerais reports the enemy is attempting to break off engagement, and is requesting permission to pursue. They also report one of the enemy battlecruisers is listing into the water, and has ceased firing. They suspect it is sinking."

Marais shook his head, "Well, thats certainly good news. Keep firing until the enemy leaves range, but deny the request for pursuit, we have enough damage to deal with here, and I believe we've accomplished enough in one day. If the engagements keep working like this, we'll have the Argentine fleet running from our shadows soon enough. Now, get damage control teams working as fast as possible, and have the cruisers approach the sinking battlecruiser and put out lifeboats to take on survivors. They may be our enemy, but I'm sure as hell not abandoning them to die in the water."

The XO nodded, and began issuing the orders to make his admirals orders a reality.

Soon the mighty brazilian navy will start pounding Buenos Aires. :D Too bad those ships cannot (in game) sail upstream along the Paraná river, then be used as mobile artillery to support the brazilian and paraguayan armies...

Anibal- thats the goal, provided i can win some actual land victories

Kenneth- that would be very nice, I imagine a single carrier in south america could pretty much rule the seas, but, as it is, ive got to make do with my battleships, but hey, i can live with that- they're doing pretty good so far, at least

Might have another post up today sometime, maybe tomorrow (if i can take a break from eating long enough :D )
