There is a very real chance that the crews will face short rations in the second Wolf 294 expedition... it will probably take the salvage ships MONTHS (quite literally) to dismantle all those wrecks, and the fleet will have to remain on-station for all that time, being refueled by relays of Tankers.

They shouldn't need a tanker if they stay still.

Just make sure you provide enough Biofemotrons for everybody. Else you may have a mutiny on your hands. :)

Early September, 2035. The Combined Fleet has returned from the missile-proofing exercise in the Ross 248 system, taken a short break, and is now running a series of crew-training exercises, in conjunction with the Rocks and the Mine-Layers. The first seven Gnats have been built, but it will be months before we have even enough to fill two Carriers. Missile production continues, and has pretty well caught up with our current demand. We have built six ultra-long range sensor Drones (1.8 billion km range), but in view of their limited numbers and the total success of the previous tests, we have decided not to waste any in testing... they will be tested in action, at Wolf 294. Mars now has ten terrafoming installations running, and they have been switched to producing Oxygen. It is estimated that only eight to ten years will be required to give Mars a sufficient supply of Oxygen to render the atmosphere fully breathable.

Staying still means that any incoming missiles have a 100% hit chance. I would rather waste fuel than risk wasting ships and men.

So you'll map waypoints round the wreaks?

I can stay in one spot while still continuing to move at 4000 kps... basically, "milling around" in a specific volume of space. This will retain my movement modifier on incoming enemy missile accuracy, while still keeping the fleet on-station. The drawback is that it uses fuel. Probably, it wastes fuel.

But...

That first battle in the Wolf 294 system was a nightmare. I was convinced that we were about to lose the entire fleet, and I had to fight through the whole battle, and try to continue making correct decisions, with that foreboding of doom hanging over me.

THIS TIME we are going in prepared, and we will make every reasonable effort to improve the odds further. So even if and when we kill that ninth ship, we will continue to assume that we might come under surprise attack at any moment, from outside our sensor range. That means that the fleet will remain at battle stations, and continue "zig-zagging" even if we believe that all Prix ships have been killed.

So I will arrange for a relay of Tankers to bring us the fuel that we require to remain at battle stations for months.

Will the tankers be at some measure of risk coming through the gate unescorted and having to go all the way to the junkyard, or are you going to detach some portion of the fleet to escort them in and out?

On the one side, splitting the fleet is risky. On the downside, the tankers being destroyed along the way could also set ourselves up for a mess.

I will position our Spy ships out on the flanks, to watch for any Prix ships attempting to make an end-run around our Battle Fleet. I would much prefer not to split the fleet, since that weakens both our interlocking PD screen and also our full-up Fleet Salvos. How large a detached force would be required, to stop a Prix end-run? Half of the fleet?

So, I'm fully caught up, just in time for me to leave again for a few weeks.

Emu, I really salute you for this one. It has been one hell of a ride over more than 240 pages, and I bet this can easily generate another 500 pages before it reaches the end. When I come back I bet this game will have had some more really tense moments and I look forward to reading all about them. :D

Oh, and I signed up for this in the signup thread, but it seems to be a tad dead over there. :(

Thanks for the kind remarks... for a spreadsheet/database game with no graphics, I find it incredibly tense and immersive.

I'll take care of your application... any favored career? No scouts or warships are left, unfortunately.

An administrator if possible. Or perhaps a spy. I know what happened to the last spy team but since I play werewolf gruesome deaths to awfully hidious creatures in forum games are not a strange thing for me :D

Indeed.

Having the spies on the flanks is probably the best we can hope to manage.

Of course I could be wrong, but I'm fairly sure ships don't use fuel if they are doing a task. The tankers might be moving at some speed for targeting purposes, but only actually moving on the map seems to take up fuel.

Does it use fuel? I mean I've left ships in orbits of planets at full speed and can't say I've ever seen their fuel drop so I just assumed that ships no matter where they are that have full speed but are "stationary" don't burn fuel.

Edit: About the spy ships, can we not put one in orbit of a planet and have it use its passive sensors?

Not sure. We'll find out.

I would rather limit the risks to the Spy ships until the remaining Prix warships are dead, the wrecks dismantled, and we are ready to take on the hypothetical planetary defenses. There is no reason to take on the risks inherent in attempting to do everything at once.

I'll be interested to find out if they do burn fuel. But if the ship pickets the planet it should be almost undectable with no thermal signature and no EM either.

It has to GET there first. At 7500 kps, that will indeed leave a detectable engine plume.

You mean "Randakar" :p
But thanks, that sounds like a really good place for me to be. Mining up cr*ploads of minerals for the Glory of Emu!
