Papal states: 1492-1497
A brief, internal and very very secret analysis report at the Holy See:
Since the peaceful spring of 1492, the world has become a darker place indeed. The former pope, Innocentius VIII, passed away in the month of July, that fateful year. The Holy See is now guided by pope Alexander VI, who may not be as able a diplomat as his predecessor, but he is more skilled at handling practical matters of administrative and military nature, and the difference in politics is only marginal as the cardinals are always ready to inform him of how to best approach the different rulers of the enlightened world. At his side he also has Homerus, an excellent advisor whose only flaw is a strong preference for the church wine. He is very creative though, and has offered our most enlightened father many suggestions for how things could be changed. Surely the Lord is wise to have given us such great leadership in these dark times.
The troubles began early in his papalship, when Milan declared an unprovoked war against the papal states. Her allies were wise, however, and chose not to actively help Milan in her crimes. Unfortunately for Milan, the pope had ordered the bulk of the papal army to move north, in case Venice's army would accidentally proceed a bit too far to the south. d'Este, whose ability to lead an army in combat was equalled only by that of a fat, happy cow was given the duty of taking his 1,000 men south and make sure that Naples did not advance. He was never heard from since, but his sacrifice must have made Naples realise that it would be best to stay out of the papal lands. Meanwhile the northern army completely annihilated Milan's forces, despite having to cross the great river in order to reach the enemy. While the siege of Milan went on, Spain and France talked and disagreed about their visions for the future of Italy; Spain wanted Savoy to be left alone, while France insisted that Naples be released from the Spanish realm. As the complete victory over Milan approached, the pope considered annexing the Lombardian lands in order to make sure that Milan did not begin another aggression later on. The plan was, however, disagreed upon by the four other major powers in the area (France, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire and Venice). Out of them, Venice's opposition was the strongest and involved poorly concealed threats of aggression. While the others seemed honestly concerned about the balance of power in the region and tried to find an acceptable solution, Venice's threats have revealed the true nature of the Venetian republic; those mammon-worshippers may not have openly declared opposition to the Holy See, but in their hearts they have already made up their minds. Venice is a great threat to all that is good and holy, and must eventually be dealt with before they can seriously harm. Homerus has also suggested that it may very well be the Venetians that, through secret negotiations and subtle influences, made Milan declare war in the first place. Perhaps they were hoping for an excuse to declare war and engage in open conflict. We do not yet see everything, for the servants of the devil move silently in the shadows, but we do know that Venice can not be trusted. As the saying goes, "there are lies, damned lies and Venice."
The Milanese war was concluded when Spain offered to pay reparations on Milan's behalf, following the successful capture of the town. In order to improve our infrastructure and prepare for the future, our father accepted the reparations (200 ducats, 150 of which were paid immediately and 35 were seemingly paid later; it appears the treasurer missed the notification and "lost" the ducats in the many administrative workings of the Vatican). We left behind some agents, however, who will send word if Milan develops in an unfortunate way. Hopefully they have now seen the light and will not listed to the Venices of Venice any more.
Besides using the gold to further improve our infrastructure, by promoting officials in the north and the east, the pope also decided that it would be a good idea to increase our military resources. Following the investments, our heavy cavalry numbered well over 10,000 men and horses.
The next war that followed was when Tuscany (also) foolishly declared war without provokation, where Modena and the knights hospitallier decided to join in. They did not stand a chance, however, and their entire army was completely and utterly annihilated at the battle of Bologna. More than 10,000 faithful men died that tragic day.
The situation was further complicated when the nobles of Brandenburg decided to pursue their own foreign policy (apparently the emperor did not mind in this case) and declared war on Denmark, claiming that it was a war of liberation for Mecklemburg's sake. Expecting France to join in, the pope decided to honour the alliance. When France decided to leave the alliance, our most wise pope saw the wisdom in Homerus' advice and signed a separate peace with the Holy Roman Empire; it was not in the interest of either to fight a war, for both sides are good and faithful catholics eager to defend the true faith. The emperor can also be assumed to know what is best for his realm, for he is second only to the pope in the material world.
The war in Italy was concluding soon thereafter, but we did not reach the complete victory we sought, for the leader of the alliance decided to sign a peace which left us without any progress having been made. The courier that delivered the written message had a red flag with a white cross on it and spoke a foreign language, which made us unsure of which country it was that had betrayed us; was it Savoy or Denmark? While the pope concluded that it probably was Savoy, we could not be sure and should leave the small alliance. The Danes and Savoyards now stand alone, and we pray that the Lord knows how to tell the two apart so that the right ones face an untimely demise.
Following the war, it was decided that a new alliance should be formed with the French. France insisted, however, that they should be the alliance leaders, for the vassals of France would otherwise refuse to join the alliance.
Some other notes:
* There are rumours of war in the east, where muslims are killing muslims. It appears, however, that the Turks took advantage of the chaotic situation in Italy and annexed Ragusa. We must be on our guard, for they need only a little more territory before they can launch a strong invasion of Italy. It is our hope that the internal struggles of the Holy Roman Empire are over soon, for we may very well need their strength if a crusade against the infidels becomes a necessity.
* The Iberians have successfully driven out the muslims from Granada, their last stronghold in western Europe. We should take the initiative to conquer northwestern Africa and gradually push back that perverted faith until all of Africa is cleansed.
PAX ITALIA
The two wars in Italy have showed us that the servants of the devil are plotting against the Holy See, hoping to bring about its downfall and slowly turn humanity against God. It is obvious that we need more control, for there can be only one master of the situation. If it is not us that guide history, it can only end up going worse and worse. We must therefore, to begin with, take control over the corrupted lands of Tuscany and Modena. They must never again rise up against the Holy See. We have made a pact with France, according to which they support our claims on the two countries. We expect that no good Christian will interfere with the subjugation of the betrayers. Anyone who does is obviously not a good Christian and will be excommunicated and banished for supporting the heretics and servants of the devil rather than the great father, our pope. Their lands will then be legally divided among the righteous, so that the country may never rise again. In order to achieve outer peace in the world, we must first find inner peace in Italy.
Concluding remarks:
* "Venice" is now the official papal word for a lie worse than a "damned lie".
* Spain still owes us 15 ducats.
* Never trust Venice.
* The list of countries with corrupted leadership: Venice, Savoy (likely; could be Denmark), Milan, Modena and Tuscany.
* Venice, being the strongest anti-pope country, must be neutralized as soon as possible.
* Spain and Portugal will be granted the pope's support for legitimate ownership of any provinces they take from the muslims in the region of Gibraltar. The Christians are at an advantage now and should make good use of it.
* A crusade may have to be called against the Ottomans, once the situation calms down in Europe and the Turks are busy fighting in the east. We will expect our allies (France and her vassals), the Holy Roman Empire and Venice to join it. The objective may vary depending on the situation, but it will involve the liberation of Ragusa at the very least. It may be counter-productive, however, if the war strengthens Venice more than the Ottomans are weakened.
* The orthodox Russians seem to be consolidating their position, according to the rumours that travellers bring. We may have to call a crusade against them in order to force a union of the churches.
