To die before living as slaves

pbc.gif

Hello everybody.
This is my first attempt on an AAR so don't expect to much.
I'm going to play Bolivia as the title says.
I'm playing VIP 0.4 and my goals and restrictions are as follow:

  • Keep the Union with Peru intact.
  • Pwn my neighbours!
  • Become a Great Power
  • Dominate South America.
  • I will not take a single chinese province before 1860, and a maximum of 9 provinces.

I will get started soon.

Santa Cruz

Bolivia in 1836 is in ruins. The Bolivian-Peru federation has been united for less then a year and the dream of Andrés Santa Cruz seems to be doomed to fail.
Andrés Santa Cruz was born in the Bolivian capital La Paz in 1792.
He became president of Peru in 1826 and later president of Bolivia 1829.
Now he stands on on a mountain ready to fall.
Time for action has come!

Bol1.jpg

Santa understands that without money no action can take place.
On the first of January the development of Stock Exchange begins.

Santa looks with a jealous eye towards Europe, how can those evil imperialists be able to please their citizens when I can't?!?

Well he thought to himself. Perhaps they can learn me?
So shall it be!
Bol2.jpg

Santa Cruz sets sail towards the old world.
Intelligens briefing tells him his time as ruler is short without an imediate change.

Will he be able to to hold the union together?

Santa Cruz was happy that his naval reforms earlier had paid of like this.
The trip to Europe went suprisingly calmly. Although Santa just waited for the sea to lay it's wrath on his frigate.

bol3.jpg

The 12th of February Santa Cruz arrives at the shores of Hannonver, now the Hannoverians are know for their good advices.
The worlds most powerful women is of Hannoverian decend.

Santa didn't want to make a noise of himself and kept his visit to Europe a secret.
Only the men he trusted the most knew about his visit.
He worked his way towords the capital and went into a resturant.
He went there every evening, 4 days in a row and on the 4th day he met Karl-Günter von Hannover.
Karl-Günter had once given advise to the King of Hannover.
Santa got interrested and wanted to know more.
He didn't have much time so he did what he usually does.
Santa got him drunk.
Karl-Günter was very eager to tell Santa about himself after a few, No, alot of beers.
He had given the King of Hannover a very bad advise.
So ich told zie king... attack die Prussians. *hick* and er fired ich.

Santa thought that he sounded just about right as an advisor.
Just a little crazy that's all.
But the situation couldn't get worse.
Santa bought him beers and noded every time Karl speaked.
When he passed out Karl was escorted on board.

Santa knew he had to get himself one more Advisor to be able to make the right decisions.

The next morning Karl-Günter woked up and Santa told him who he was and that he needed his advise and that he would get paid in pure Bolivian Gold.
Karl-Günter couldn't reject to that proposition.

Where will Santa go next on the search for an advisor?

Lets just hope that the rest goes well too :D

------------------------------------------------------

To Schweden Karl-Günter said.
What? asked Santa
We schall find you a new berater in Schweden.
First of all what's a berater? and second, Schweden?? what have they ever accomplished? asked Santa.
They have done nothing for more than 200 years!
Aii, it's an advisor. Ich wouldn't say that having a glücklich population and a respected reputation is nichts, would you?
Hmm..
Santa thought for a second but then he realised it was a fairly good sugestion.
To Sweden it is!

The small frigate set sail towards the big port city of Gothenburg.

I will go and find you a berater my lord.
I can find an advisor myself!
said Santa angry.
My lord, can a wooden squirrel pee?
Santa looked at Karl puzzled, he was just going to open his mouth and make a snappy comment when Karl-Günter said:
See you tonight my lord.

Santa waited paitently for Karls return and just when the sun was about to rise he came walking with a young man.

Pirovo Karl! I told you to get me an advisor.
Not a young boy.

Eh, don't you go spanisch me. This boy will help you alot.
He is very well trained in people, go ahead tell him.

Karl puffed the boy towards Santa.
Well spitt it out boy! Santa sneared.
Ja. I have been trained in psychology and know alot about social and religious issues.
*Sigh*
Well jump aboard, I don't have time for this.

Santa knew he would have to control his rage but knowing how close to failing he was he didn't think before acting.
On the way home Santa got time to a little chat with the Swedish boy.

So, young boy. What's your name.
My name is Per Persson.
Ah.. I see, mean parents huh?
Yes they were horrible.
So can I assume that you are as good as Karl-Günter said?
I will not dissapoint you.
We shall see.
said Santa while he sipped some tea from a cup.
Indeed. He nodded to himself, then he sipped some more.

The trip home went safe. On the 15th of April the had arrived in Arica.

Scrat.gif

Karl didn't want to appear on picture.
I will show someone who resembles him spritually instead.
kalles_4.jpg

This is Per, he always has that strange look on his face.

Wow I can't belive I'm actually here.
Belive it boy. Now we need to make up a plan,
What do you suggest Karl?

We mobilize!
Mobilize? we can't mobilize you fool! That won't be seen as a kind act by the neighbouring countries.
You pesky little junge!
SILENCIOS!
Santa roared.
We will mobilize, our neighbours are already plotting against us.

bol4.jpg

Friction with the Union

So we have now increased the number of soldiers we can mobilize.
We sure have.
said Karl.
So what will be next on the agenda? Per asked.
I have noticed that your standing army doesn't have full strenght Santa.
Oh you are correct my friend, perhaps we shall reinforce it.
That sounds wise.
Per added.

Now that your army is of full strenght where shall it be located?
My informers tells me that the resistance against me has its base in Lima, the former Peruan capital.
They have also told me that all my neighbours is secretly mobilizing their forces to stop the federation.

That informationen can't be trusted!
And why is it so Karl?
Brazil is already having some sort of bürgerkrieg at the moment.
Ehh... Burger king?
Ai, war inside the nation mylord, and alsot note that Equador will not be very likely to attack us since they are to weak.
I don't know about that Karl, all weak neighbours may very well team up on us.

Santa paid very little attention to Pers comment.
What about Argentina, Colombia and Chile?
Argentina and it's leader Juan Manuel de Rosas are in conflicts with France and the UK, but they are still very strong.
Colombia is very unlikly to wage a war across the mountains, but if Equador joins in against us and allows Colombia access we are as good as dead I assure you.

So.. we should put our forces to dismantle the Chilean threat?
That's what I would do, mylord.
What about the resistance force in Peru?
Send our cavallery army to put them out quickly.

After our army had arrived in place all we could do was to wait.
On the very last day of the year 1836 my fear finally came true.

bol5.jpg

Following the anticipated decleration of war Boliva mobilized.
Knowing that Chile had a cavallery division in it's capital we needed to counter it, and indeed we did.

bol6.jpg

Those silly Chileans had left Copiapo unguarded so our infantery division stormed in, the Chileans became furious of rage from their mistake and launched an attack from La Serena but the army had virtually no morale so it was a quick victory for us. Nevertheless they sent more troops at our single division.
The battle was hard and continued for over 2 months, but on the first of April our mobilized divisions were ready to deply and 2 corps were sent towards the battle of Copiago. With their arrival the Chileans flead and seige begun.
Later schock strucked Bolivia!

bol7.jpg

I knew I should have listen more close to Karl-Günter.
But I can't go back in time.

The other two mobilized divisions were sent to the border with Argentina.

On may the 12th the city of Copiago fell. A few days later The 2a División de Caballería was ready to be deployed and was sent to finish of Chile.
one of the four divisions in Copiago was left to guard the province and the other three was sent across the Chilean border to Argentina and the city of Calingasta.

On the 16th of June the Peruvian population took up arms!
Lima and Jauja fell within days, luckily we had one cavallery division situated nearby but it didn't make it in time but was able to destroy the rebel army in Lima.

All provinces in Peru was now up in arms trying to overthrow me.
City after city fell into the hands of the Rebel Scums :mad:

In the end of August the city of Calingasta fell to the Bolivian army, next stop Santiago!
Meanwhile the Argentinans where fighting against our 2 divisions in Santa Rosa. We were outnumbered 2:3, if Argentina is able to break through everything will be lost!

The battle of Santa Rosa was a long and hard one,
luckily our divisions had dug in before the battle but was quickly loosing ground to the storming infanteries and cavalley from Argentina.
Meanwhile our main army had just arrived in the unguarded Chilean capital Santiago.
A few days later almost all of Peru was in rebel hand.

We have to let them go, we can't hold on to them!
I will not tolerate half my country revolting away for me!
Santa roared with rage.
Refusing them independence may result with revolts in Boliva as well Santa.
That's a risk I'll have to take Per.
We will never surrender! The Peruvian-Bolivian confederation lives on!!

Moments later the first revolter appeared in core Bolivia.
Luckily it was just a few hundred supporters of Peru.

Karl!
Where is he I need to speak to him..
KARL!!!?!

Oh, sorry my lord I just heard..

Heard what?! Santa interrupted
Santiago has fallen to our armee, and they are offering us peace.

bol8.jpg

Bah! we have completly crushed them, we should continue and incorporate them into the federation!
May I remind you that the Federation is close to dissolvement Santa?
Only a fool would reject this peace offer.

Ohh, right.. Well what are you two waiting for? Announce the acceptment of the peace proposal at once!
Sir yes sir!
Sir yes sir!

Santa smiled, maybe there's hope after all...

Following our peace signing with Chile our army gathered to make the death blow towards Argentina.
They had just recently won the battle of Santa Rosa and was currently on their way towards La Paz.

While our army was marching on back to defend our capital our scientists announced the development of Stock Exchange as completed.

Excellent.
Why do you spend money onz that mist, Santa?
Because we need to have better techs than our enemies.
Bah science sucks!
Science rocks! cause knowledge is Power!
Word Per.. Word.

I never know if to say something, so all i'll say is good going, keep going, and another good update. Hope we can see a unified South America or something of the like under the mangnanimous crown of Bolivia.

Argentinas main army was split up in three following the takeover of Santa Rosa, they went off in different directions and I couldn't have been more pleased about the situation (well things might have looked brighter if half my territory wasn't painted black).

Our army from Chile came and kicked some serious Argentina butt.

Mylord they are fleeing!
Those pussies!

Watch the language, I will not tollerate such foul words when kids are present.
I'm 20 years old goddammit!
Go to your room Per.

Per went to his room. He left Karl and Santa in complete silence.

Following the kicking of Argentinas butt they had no choice but to accept a white peace.
Boliva was now finally at peace, but one disturping issue was still going on.

On a minor note the confederence that was set to be held in La Paz had been stalled until the end of the warss and we finally manage to hold the diplomatic confederance with Paraguay, Brazil and Colombia. Our diplomatic relations had been significantly improved.

Meanwhile the supporters of the dissolvement were still fighting the Federation's armies.

Despite the interference of Chile and Argentina and the efforts of the Peruvian rebels, the Federation has managed to survive the war, though in a fragile position. Discontent within the population is rampant, the military is restless, the economy is in ruins, and a political resolution is demanded before internal peace can truly be possible, if at all.

Never! Peru will forever be apart of our nation!
Santa was furios, he had manage to completly destroy the threat of both Chile and Argentina, even though he had put the country in depth with over 8000£.
He would be able to pay it of he was certain of it, he just needed peace.

The following years were harsh, not only did I have to fight rebels from Peru but also the newly conquered territory from Chile and Bolivians trying to sieze control.
The whole year was a dark one, nothing more than fighting occured during the entire summer.

But maybe there will be light in the tunnel soon...

Fall arrived, it came and brought nothing but darkness with it.

Santa was tired of fighting, everybody seemed to be against him.
But he would die to make sure his dream would last forever.

Santa needed to take a break and left his residence in La Paz and went to the lake of Titicaca.
Sunset_lg.jpg

Titicaca at sunset

It was the 26th of October and Santa and his loyal guard was standing on the shores near the shores of the lake when a dried up old traveller emerged from the wilderness. When given a whiskey he said with a hoarse voice:

Gold! Gold has been found! In La Serena a mountain of Gold!

Gold? Are you sure?
Yes I'm sure I've been running for days trying to find our president.
Well you finally did.
Give this man a horse!
We need to get back to La Paz, now that we have found gold it's time to invest it.

Santa was rather delighted riding his horse back to his residence.
He would give anything to know how they in Chile felt at the moment, knowing they gave up their biggest asset before even discovering it.

SquirrelDance.gif

Santa was not the only one happy about the discovery, Squirrels all over Bolivia was celebrating along with Santa.

Oh welcome back Santa, I guess you've heard then?
Heard what Per?
About the discovery.
Oh Yes that's why I returned so quickly.
So isn't it time for me and Karl to get our payment now?
Payment? Oh yes, I remember. What was the deal? You'll get paid in pure gold, after your task here is done. Stop disturping me Per.
As you wish my lord...

After the discovery of gold the economy in Bolivia became stable and Santa started paying of the national depth to various banks he had borrowed from.

The war on rebels gad also recently hit a turning point.
The people were still angry but feared the new law Santa just had put into power.
Every rebel caught by the Bolivian Army would be executed.

Bol9.jpg

The rebel situation in 1840. Santa desperatly wanted to pay of the depth. So desperatly that he had cut of all reinforcements.

Santa now had the curage to continue fighting the rebel armies, he did so the entire year of 1841. Calculations shows that the population of Bolivia decreased with over 100.000 during that year alone.

Don't you think you're beeing to harsh on the rebels?
Harsh? HARSH? Death is the only thing these traitors deserves.
But why Santa? What's your gain, making your population afraid of you?
Perhaps you're right Karl, I will let them live and kill their families instead.
But, but.. Santa...
Escort Karl away from my room.

Two guards took Karl and threw him outside.
Karl thought to himself.
What have I done?
I've helped a madman, making him more powerful than ever.

After Karl was throwed out he needed to undo what he had done.
He had been blinded by the gold he'd been offered by Santa.
Now that gold was neither he nor Per had gotten any as they were promised.
Karl arranged a meeting with Per to discuss the situation.

So you've heard what he's ordering now?
No what's he up to?
He's decided to kill the families of all who rebel against him.
He has?
That's awful, why would he do that?

I think he's turned geisteskrank.
Güstenkank?
Oh.. crazy, insane, mad.
I've expected that for a long time. He didn't even ask where I come from nor who I was before he hired me as an advisor.
Yes.. he was a bit in a hurry four years ago, no?
Thankfully I've been gathering support to stop him. But we need to maintain our covers as his advisors.
Aha a revolution! Ëvöl, Ich like.
We must give him advises as if nothing have changed.
Yes.. probably for the best.
We'll have to talk later.
You're very talented Per, I'll keep quite abo' die revolution.
Yes bye.
Bye.

And they both did. For over three years they talked only a couple of times about the situation.
Santa started building statues and renaming cities and areas after himself in 1842.
He killed many families and the population was shocked by the inhumanity of Andrés de Santa Cruz.
Nobody dared to rebel against him.
He was also able to repay everything of the country's depth and later he started organizing police forces to put out crimes and prevent rebels from forming.
Santa also put a curfew in power, not allowing his citizens to stay outside after 8pm.
He was in absolute control and always guarded by his lifeguards.

But Andrés was very curious on what was going on in Lima, the former Perivian capital.

I need to know what they're hiding from me!

Why would they be hiding anything mylord?
Silencious! I'm thinking you fool.

He made an evil laugh
Yees.. I will force them to tell me.
Isn't that a bit harsh..
No it's not, guards send a division to talk the into sense! And if they choose to refuse, well, then they're as good as rebels.

The division arrived in Lima in August of 1843

PlazaMayor-Lima-Peru.jpg

The city of Lima

Fearing a bloodbath the people of Lima had no choice but to tell the division their secret.

We.. we have a gold mine a walking distance away.

When Santa heard the news he was so exited he allowed the citizens of La Paz to stay out until midnight.

Per and Karl siezed the opportunity and had a discussion.

With another bigger and more efficent gold mine he'll be rolling in cash.
We better make him use it on worthless things then.
Good idea.

Santa started influencing great powers such as France which already was in servere conflicts with Argentina.

He followed after a long discussion with Per and Karl their advise to institute national healthcare.
They convinced him that if the people lived longer they would earn him more money.
bol10.jpg

The healthcare reform was appreciated in Bolivia and it did make Santa loose alot of money but it had been payed back just 2 years after and Santa then started to promote clergymen to convert the descendents of the Incas to the one and true faith of Catholism.

bol11.jpg

Will we ever be able to overthrow him?
In time, we just have to make him focus on other parts for the moment.
We will overthrow him, he's getting old and we'll turn Bolivia into a republic.

This is one crazy ass nice AAR man.

A German and Swedish advisor, dumbass Bolivains always need foreign help he.

Santa is just the kind of crazy ruler i expect in any story, not consistent, easely persuaded, ignorant and ruthless.

:rofl:

Hilarous! :D Keep it coming! El mondo hay de ser boliviano. :p

Now, a small advice. Why do you write in red sometimes? Makes it almost impossible to read!

Thanks both of you, I don't find it hard to see the red text at all.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With two royal gold mines the Federation flourished, even though Santa raised the taxes to be able to earn even more money, he started to build up the army and the navy. 3 cavallery divisions and 2 frigates were made.
Many years flew by, Per and Karl was secretly making plans to rescue Bolivia from this tyrant, but many people started liking what Santa did. He had manage to dismantle two major threats and he had revived the economy.
What should I do with my army, Karl?
Krieg!!
But with whom?
I've heard that Argentina and Uruguay has made an alliance.
Such treaties cannot be tollerated on our backyard can it?
No certainly not, they need to be punished!
Prepare for war!
Karl left Santa quickly to go and tell Per.
Did he fell for it?
Big time! It's just a matter of time before he falls victim to this conflict
They exchanged looks..
JA!
Mua ha ha ha
Halt die klappe!
A few days later WAR was decleared against the traitors of Argentina
bolwar.jpg
They are going down, big time
The newly made División de Caballerías were quickly sent to Uruguay to make them pay for... Well... eh just pay..
Meanwhile our army was advancing deeply into Argentinas coreland.
Two months after the war Uruguay turned into a satellite state loyal to the Federation.
boluru.jpg
They sucked it up more than a wet towel.
The war with Argentina kept raging on, Santa was able to take one province in southern Argentina which was quickly named after him.
santacruzbol.jpg
Although things was happening in La Paz....
Tonight is the night Per!
I've found the right person to get rid of Santa
Karl pushes a man named Manuel Isídoro Belzu in front of him.
Will he overthrow Santa?
Bah what a joke.
We'll see.....
Seems like Santa isn't doing a half bad job of the war, Per and Karl might be getting themselves into quite a PR mess if they take him down now--looks like their plan backfired!
