here it is, here´s my first try at an aar! hope you like it...

In 1419 the Byzantine Empire lies in ruins. Our days of glory are long forgotten, the great roman armies are gone. Fortuna was not with us and so our empires fate lays in the hand of god. But neither the prayers of all the followers of the true faith nor the prayers of the beloved patriarach of Konstantinopel could save us from the impending doom.

On January, 1.we ordered to reestablish a fiscal beaurecracy to our three remaining provinces, while our diplomats tried to create a new alliance to counter the might of the turks. Cyprus was the first country to join this holy cause. New troops were raised in Thrace. No more could be done, before the turks decided to put an end to our empire.
On february, 2. the turks delcared war on us and immediately marched 23000 men to Thrace. The roman army under command of Basileus awaited the enemy on good positions, but... to no avail.
February, 18.: The turkish infantry charged up the hills and routed our infantry. Basileus now saw his only hope in the release of the famous byzatine heavy cavalry on the enemies infantry. But the heavy terrain hindered the charge and the counterattack of the 10000 turkish riders sealed the fate of the roman army. From 7500 inf 2500 inf and from 7500 cav 3500 cav could flee the battlefield, the turks losses were a meager ~800 men!
March, 23.:Basileus retreated his men to Rumelia and started a siege.
April, 1.: The traitors of the orthodox Duchy of Athens declared war on us! Obviously they were intended on taking Morea as their army was seen marching to corinth. In this time of need the emperor decided to call the help of a mercenary, the famous Günther Albrecht, a seasoned solider from the HRE and his battle hardened Landsknechte (4000 inf and 500 cav). Unfortunately the states treasury was already empty and a first loan from the bankers of venice had to be taken.
May 5.: Günther set a trap for Athen´s army... and it was a remarkable victory. From his 5000 men the Duke of Athens lost 2500 men. Günther´s Landsknechte mourn the loss of only 150 men! Now Günther´s men were eager to move into Athens... they already sensed the chance for looting, pillaging and and a large booty once Athens was captured.
June, 7.: Basileus, the Magister Militum of the roman army, suffered another defeat at the hands of 7000 (inf) recruits of the turks, as they moved through Rumelia to Dobrudja. His army, no longer strong enough to siege even the smallest fortifications retreas to bulgaria.
August: Reinforcements from Morea reached Günther´s Landsknechte in Hellas.
September, 27.: A turkish detachment covers the last free province of the byzantine empire, Morea. The small garrison of 2000 men was wiped out.
November, 16.: Basileus, who hided in some obscure and totally unimportant valley in Bulgaria was routed by freshly recruited turkish infantry. Now he´s on the move to macedonia, were another turkish army waits to slaughter the remains....
December, 4.: Basileus who wants clean his name with a glorious victory orders his troops to battle in Macedonia, but fortunately the troops do not follow his commands and retreat to Hellas, where Günther is waiting for them...

1420
January, 1.: The yearly income of the empires holdings is 0!, as all provinces are besieged....
January, 23.: Konstantinopel has fallen! The Turks loot the city... a black day for christianity
March, 17: Günthers Army conquers Athens. The emperor immediately declares Athens as eternal and integral part of the empire... other christian nations do not support this move, and now our relations are on all time low....
April 1.: the turkish main army moves out, probably intended on taking Hellas, the new byzantine stronghold...
Günther and the rest of the roman army (and some reinforcement) are ordered to lift the siege of Nafplion (Moraea).
May, 4.: The turkish army is overconfident as they see the battle standard of Basileus approaching their line. They do not know, that the Landsknechte are already behind them. Completely taken by surprise the enemy is quickly routed.
May, 17: The main turkish army is laying siege to hellas.
June: Günther´s army of byzanz boarded our fleet and, with the help of the cypriotic (?) navy, sails to thrace. A second loan is to be taken.
August, 1: A rebellion in Dobrudja routs the sieging turks, seems like luck shining again over the byzantine empire.
August, 17.: Thrace is bisieged by the German Landsknechte and the remains of the roman army.

Günther and his men seem to be elite forces? Do you have to turn to a specific country to recruit them or can they be bought on the "black market".:)

very nice AAR altough...:)

These Mercenaries had a higher morale than those crappy byzantine army units (their domestic policy is set towards "quantity"). but as soon as I merged a regular unit with them they were as bad as all the other´s. günther was simply lucky.

mercenaries are recruited in you own provinces - if available.

September, 19.: A new turkish army from Anatolya is met by the new magister militum of the Byzantine Empire, Günther Albrecht, on the fields of battle in Thrace. His quick reaction to the crossing of the Dardanelles Strait allowed him to defeat the turks one by one. Another Victory!
Dezember, 7.: New reinforcements from Morea filled the ranks of the roman army. Günthers command now consists of 10000 inf and 8000 cav.

1421
Jan, 1: The combined yearly income of Dobrudja and Morea - including war taxes - equals 11d. the next loan will soon be taken.
February, 11.: The Capitol of the Eastern Empire is retaken! but the atrocities of the victorious army and the people of Konstantinopel against the turkish defenders do not add to the fame of Byzanz! No mercy! was the call of the ungracious mercenaries.
March, 1.: After finishing their bloody business, the Army of Byzanz went on the offensive: the next goal of the ambitious magister was Macedonia and the capitol of the infidels. Along the way to macedonia every turkish official was immediately executed. Meanwhile another turkish army was -again- siegeing Dobrudja.
April, 13: What sins have we done? Even the hordes of the seven hells can´t be as numerous as the armies of this detestable enemy! Another 8000 men have landed in Morea, after our fleet of 15 galleys suffered a devastating defeat against 3 carracks and 7 galleys of the turks.
August, 17.: Athens burns! The city is pillaged! As revenge for atrocities in Byzanz the sultan ordered 3000 people of Athens to be put to death, another 5000 to be sold to slavery or to be sent to the galleys... and , if this would not have been enough, the unbeaten main army of the turks moves again... to Macedonia!

September, 8.: Along the venerable Via Egnatia are large battle is fought. The advance guard of the turkish army is sighted in the outskirts of Knautia! The first meeting is fought between Zosimos, the leader of the byzantine cavalry, and Kemal, the daring commender of the turks. This time the open ground gave an edge to the romans and the charge dispersed the advance guard. But not for long! One day later the turks regrouped and the numerically superior turkish cavalry pushed the byzantine´s back to forested hills. General Mevlevi, the turkish commander sends Kemal, the advance guard and his veteran infantry in a flanking move north of the romans positions, while his light cavalry is harassing the roman line. Günther is fully aware of the flanking move, but is also reluctant to lift the siege of the enemy´s captiol and so decides to secure the flank with the remains of his crack Landsknechte. Three days later, after resting his troops, Kemal starts the assault. Wave after wave of brave turkish warriors engage the Byzantine´s position. After a full day of fighting, with no quarter given on both sides, the landsknechte finally break! Terror and shock quickly spreads in the roman army, when the rumour of Günthers death is heard. They rout! The cohorts leave their positions and the whole line crumbles. Mevlevi immediately orders his cavalry to pursue the routed enemy!
8000 inf and 4000 cav are dead, wounded or captured! Again the byzantine army was no match for superior turkish troops.
It is said, that Günther died in a turkish dungeon....
Okotber, 3.: The "roman army" reaches Thrace. Basileos takes again command, and sees himself confronted with the whole turkish army, that soon would reach Konstantinopel and an capitol in total disarray! Large chunks of the people of Konstatinopel try to flee from the certain revenge of the sultan. Even the Emperor can nowhere be found (regency!).
Oktober, 5.: Mevlevi closes in on Konstantinopel. Our army is not yet in the condition to take up a fight again and either fled or surrendered to the enemy.
November, 21.: Dobrudja is taken by the turks
Decemeber, 7.: Basileos and his 7000 men of the roman army are again in Macedonia and start a siege against the enemy´s capitol.

1422
Again no money from our land holdings. Luckily the Venetian are still willing to borrow us money. (those idiots, they should already know, that there´s no possibility to prevent a bankruptcy anymore)

March, 27.: The capitol of the enemy falls! And fortunately Konstantinopel still stands defiant. Our Empire is saved, as the turkish ambassador offers peace for Athens, 175d and military access, which is gratefully accepted.

It's funny how everybody runs to take the Byzantinians... isn't this one the 3rd Byzantinian AAR so far?

You were talking about a flanking mouvement, capturing troops and the presence of forests during the battle. Are they in fact important for battle outcome or is it part of the story?:)

I liked that there will be "Carracks"... do you think that is more primitive than "galleys"? :)

But terrain was important in EU1 as well.

Please tell me about the terrain in EU1...I seem to ignore this feature.

Why would annexing Athens, which is rightfully a part of the Empire, enrage the Christian world?

Because it is a sovereign Christian nation... if you can depose one Christian King, what guarentees the sovereignity of others?
