~An Upstart Empire ~ A Story of Nippon~
JapeneseFlag.jpg

A Period of Change

Let this tale begin in the year 1419, for this year saw the start of much change in Nippon. Japan which hosted the people of Nippon lies on the peaceful ocean and is comprised of a series of islands. At our tales start the islands were ruled by a man whom was referred to as Shioho. While I will not go, so far as to call him incompetent of his power it should be noted that he was militaristic. Power was acquired through force, and when one puts forth all their effort into perfecting one skill another goes unaided. In the case on Shioho his ability to handle the fragile Japanese economy was neglected and in need of improvement.

At the climax of his rule in the year 1419 he began to after a time of severe turmoil implement reforms. The supply and maintenance of the standing army were cut significantly. In all truth a large portion (roughly half) of some seventy thousand men whom served in the service of the army were dismissed back into domestic life. Coupled with military cut backs was an attempt to revitalized commerce in the capital of Kyoto.

While the land forces of Nippon saw cutbacks and reductions in size naval forces stood untouched. Shioho's tactical prowess allowed him to see into his fragile nation's future. Upon careful consideration he came to the decision that a powerful fleet could prevent the enemy from ever setting foot upon Japan. What then would be the sense in an enormous and idle army? No, there is absolutely no sense in such a foolish thought. Therefore the reforms and changes that ensued.

Though the thought of an enemy setting down upon Japan was quite unthinkable to any man whom held power at this point in Nippon’s history a war happening was quite possible. While the surrounding nations of this era were not to say hostile they all deserved having an eye watch their actions. Especially the Chinese Empire which if properly implemented had the power to parade easily over any nation in close proximity to its' location.

All the aforementioned reforms took place in the dawn months of 1419. By the month we commonly refer to as April they were all more, or less in effect. Despite all of the positive signs of Nippon’s state several unfortunate flaws still stood in her way to achieving much of anything. First and most important to mention is a drop of stability in the islands following the drastic actions of those first few months. Though the union was not about to collapse or fall to shambles such internal matters were always crucial to consider in this era.

A final point to mention would be that while reform aided the weak and stalling economy of Nippon they were not a cure all. Profit was still unheard of and the ruling body was suffering a monthly loss of capital. Time was the cure that Shioho offered. His claims were merely that as years slid by the condition of such maters would improve. Who is to say this was the wrong approach? All that can be said in truth of this strategy is that it was perhaps the greatest gamble possibly taken.

The blossom blooms slowly yet steadily. While it is beautiful in adapting it is stunning once revealed in full. The would be Empire of Nippon hoped to achieve a similar effect upon foreigners as it strived to find a place in the churning global society.

VERY bold.

I have only one piece of advice for you Xizo: Get a foothold on Korea at all costs. In the 1500s Japan is going to go up in flames, and you need a place to hold out - preferably with a sizeable army - while everything settles down.

I look forward to seeing how this goes - as someone who crashed and burned spectacularly with Nippon! However, if you do your homework, and listen to advice from others, I'm sure it's possible to get through the nasty patch and make an excellent game of it. Good luck! ;)

Part II
Standing on One Foot.

Nippon stood on one foot in 1419 shaken and perhaps ready to fall into history. Shioho had made his reforms and had nothing more to perform until the full consequence of those actions could be properly determined. Whilst the fog of time fell away he began to plot for the future years. Not of his life, but rather of Nippon. When one considers the character of Shioho it is important to recall that he unselfishly served his duty. Preparation for the next rulers term of power began relatively early in his life and times.

Shioho had two great goals which he wished above all to have Nippon complete. Within his swirled thoughts it did not mater when merely as long as the task was done. First and foremost was an urge to conquer the peninsula of Korea. Establishing a stronghold on the peninsula would show both a sense of defiance towards the Chinese hordes, and also be a strategic asset. Korea was for the time being though out of the picture and its' conquest an event to proceed deep into the future.

Another obsession perhaps of Shioho's was the island of Taiwan. At this point in Asian history the tiny island was uninhabited by any of the established nations of the period. Both Chine and Nippon outwardly expressed an urge to capture the isle. Many a reason fueled such sentiment. Nippon wished to acquire it for the reasons of increased economic ability and furthermore a stronghold against Japan. Though this was in all truth a brilliant idea it was also a lofty one. The weakened economy of Nippon would mean the initial investment in such an exploit would be potentially crippling. Despite this yawning disadvantages Shioho was dead set upon such a course of action. What a reader should remember is that what he the shogun orders is final and your duty to perform if his wish be thus.

The Isle of Taiwan

As mentioned the state of finances in Nippon was shaky at best. Despite the monthly loses in capitail times were looking up. Trade had reached a climax in Kyoto with no proper competition to contend with it had quickly flourished. Other maters of commerce in mainland China were also looking up though progressing slowly. Such exploits were used by Shioho to rally his serfs to their duty. Thus, slowly and quietly the people of Nippon preformed basic duties and laid the foundation for a glorious history.

Over the coming years Nippon's rulers would plot the downfall of her rivals and the undoing of anyone whom stood in her way. Many times would the island nation stall and tremor, but never would she fall. Likewise those whom resided within the placid islands would rise up and fight with the enthusiasm to match or surpass any adversary. The bud of the Japanese flower had begun to bloom time would see it flourish.

I love playing as Japan because it's one terrible event after another but it is possible to pull through. And it's so tempting to start colonising and I admit I start colonising and found myself knee deep in rebel scum without any money for an army pretty quickly
