Golden Prague

Prologue

Prague, January 1419

Valclav IV, son of Karel I the Emperor, and King of Bohemia was dying. The whole court knew it.

He had been a weak King and a weak man and the Diet of nobles that ruled in his name would not under normal circumstances have been unhappy to see him die. Then again these were not normal circumstances.

Jan Biskup, Archbishop of Prague was a worried man. He controlled one of the most powerful factions in the Diet, was personally extremly wealthy and was at only 40 extremely young for his position. His future would have been golden indeed if had not been for that Hussite business.

Yes...the Hussites. From his office in the palace Jan could see the near daily confrantations between the followers of the dead preacher and the followers of the status quo.

"Emmince?" coughed Petr Mestan his secratary gently.

"Hmm? Sorry I was caught up in my thoughts. Continue your report." said Jan as he sat back down in his comfortable chair and listened.

"The Bavarians have accepted the offer of marriage Emminence. Princess Klára and her entourage have just left. I have also spoken with the Polish Consul about the possibility of marrying Princess Ludmila and the reaction was favourable." spoke Mestan in his usual rather dry tones. He was a fine servant but the archbishop (hardly a warm man himself) occasionally found his lack of evident emotion offputting.

Oh well, at least he wouldn't quibble whatever the order.

"Have my suggestions about reforming the local goverment been applied?" Jan was firmly of the belief that as much power should be concentrated in Prague as possible. He had butted heads with more local nobles than he could count.

"Yes Emminence, though not without some complaints. Also Burgomeister Rychtar has reformed the tax system in Prague and has begun training specialised 'Tax Collectors'."

Jan considered this. "It's a sound idea and overall I'm in favour but the burghers might be less keen - half of them had the old Baliffs in their pockets. Still if it works here maybe we could apply it elsewhere... Is that all?"

"Yes Emminence"

"Good, now send for Countess Markéta, I have business to discuss with her."

After Mestan had left the Archbishop wandered over to his grand window overlooking the city. He could hear the sounds of fighting in the distance.

"Lord my God" he whispered in near silent prayer, "help me to steer through this rising storm..."

To be continued...

*********

Ok this is my first EU II AAR (though I'm working on a HoI AAR for Romania) so it isn't going to be too great. Don't expect Mario Puzo or anything. :)

This is just a prologue so things will get better.

In case it isn't clear in the text so far I haven't done much. I moved the slider 1 towards Centralisation, started building a tax collector in Bohemia and set up Royal Marriages with Bavaria and (later in 1419) Poland.

Anyway, please read and review.

Hussites!

Breslau, August 1419

Kurt Schiller, ran through the back streets of the city as fast as his short legs could carry him. If he could reach the stables by the gate he could escape before the armed Hussite gangs controling the city realised he was gone.

Schiller had up until two days ago been Mayor of Breslau and a successful one by all accounts, though not popular due to his outspoken views against the oious Vaclav, who he considered much to soft on Hus. He had been happy with his wife and young children (thankfully safe off visiting his brother in law in Trachenburg) and well off. Then word had come through that a Hussite mob had killed the Mayor of Prague and shortly after that that the King was dead. Which meant the Emperor Sigismund was now King. The man who had burnt Hus. Simeltaneously all Bohemian Hussites had gone into revolt leaving Romanists like Schiller in sudden danger.

He could see the gates up ahead of him now - desterted as the guards had left their posts to stop the rioting. Moving as quietly as he could (fortunatly he had left his chain and heavy robes behind so as to ease his get away) he managed to saddle a horse and escape the city riding without break towards Prague.

Behind him the first few wisps of smoke from the fire someone had lit at the Merchants Guild began to climb into the slate grey sky.

Presently it began to rain.

*

Jan Biskup slipped out of the throne room with a sigh of relief. After 3 hours of negotations a shaky truce between the Romanists led by Queen Sophia and the Hussites, though that odious heretic Jan Zizka was unlikely to accept it.

Still at least he was still alive and had maintained his position. Others where less fortunate. In a series of sweeping reforms the Hussites, who had managed to gain a majority in the Diet had created revenue by stripping it from the followers of Sigismund and the Romanists had been unable to stop them.

Clearly Sigismund would never be accepted in Bohemia but who would rule then? Worried he walked swiftly to his office, a tall, lean dark haired man with a face like marble. He found Markéta, Countess of Moravia.

They hugged each other.

"My dear friend, what shall we do?" cried the Countess. Not as young as she had been but still very beautiful she had been the Archbishops friend, fellow plotter and ally for many years.

Gently he took her hands and looked her eyes. "I know what has happened is disastorous and hateful. But, may God forgive me for saying this but we must try and approach the Hussites and look to serve them" At her shocked face he clarified himself "Sigismund will never be King here, not till the Hussites are ground to dust. I don't think Queen will manage to rule either. The Hussites can't last forever, and there are some good statesmen amongst them. One of them told me that they have cemented on behalf of Bohemia an alliance with Poland. I don't think Bavaria or Hungary will ever forgive us but at least the Kindom has allies of sorts. They are even planning on setting up tax collectors in Erz and Silesia, so they might be willing to listen to my advice on other matters. Besides If we don't want to lose everything, we must adapt..."

To be continued...

A very interesting tale so far. You are setting up some good characters and managing to relate the game events fairly well into the story. I look forward to more.
