War Exhaustion?
Ok, I don't know if this is EEP or not, so I'm posting it here to get some feedback. I'm playing an EEP GC as Portugal, and I've noticied a war that's been going on between Atjeh and Brunei on one side, and Mataram on the other. The problem is it has been going on for 40 years! (something that peeves me because I wanted to DoW Atjeh to get Jakarta from them, before it goes over 500). I believe it's a transport battle problem, as every time I go by there I notice ships battling in the same seazone. I knoe I could just DoW and sweep in there, ending the battle, but I gave up on Jakarta a while ago, and set my sights on other things. I'm just curious as to why their war exhaustion has never gone above 4. I've only noticied this recently in games, but I've never seen WE of more than 4 in AI core provinces, why is this? It just stimulates wars that go on way to long. I've entered wars five years into the conflict, and two years later my WE was the same as all the participants, who had been in the war much longer. I don't think DP settings could be the culprit in all these cases. The problem with these Southeast countries would've been solved years ago if they had regular WE, both governments would've crashed by now, but instead, unless I interevene, the war will last for the rest of the game.

What difficulty are you playing? I think they get the WE cut in half on Very hard setting. I could be wrong though.

Hard difficulty. Yes it does suck, and no it doesn't. It got me to leave Indonesia alone, which would've been an conversion nightmare. Now I'm concentrating on making the Southern Atlantic a Portugese pond. Building up an economy that doesn't go all back to colonies and merchants is a little tough with Portugal, although I've got three CoTs under my belt and almost make free trade, I should start to seriously dominate CoTs on the continent. Mostly I'm waiting for Brazil to pay its dividends, which will be necessary if I'm going to take on converting those pagan africans.

You could check out your save file and just edit out the transport battle.

Am I missing something here? It's about 4:30 in the morning here and I'm half asleep, but why does the fact that they're in a ongoing war keep you from DoW'ing them?
As for the war exhaustion, the AI gets a cheat on it, so their's isn't as bad as a human player's. |

It keeps me from DoWing them because unfortunately Mataram occupied Jakarta, which is what I wanted. So if I went to war (unless they make peace after I destroy their navy), I wouldn't be able to conquer that province anyway. I'll just colonize Australia instead and wait for a CoT there.

With no attrition and no WE there's no reason for the sea "battle" to ever end .... I have this vivid picture of two unarmed fleets exchanging insults for decades and decades ...
![]() Why don't you just commission some pirates in the sea zone where the eternal transport battle is going on? That'll shift 'em.

I don't think it would, actually. I argue by analogy with rebel armies : If a rebellion occurs in a province where two armies are battling, the rebels will, very politely, wait until their betters have finished their business, then fight the winner. Presumably pirates and privateers act the same way, and so would sit around forever waiting for the battle to end...
It does not sound as though you consider this a problem anymore, but I suggest you edit the battle out of your savefile anyway on general principles. Wars that last forty years are one thing, but battles?
