Is Venice better off in or out of the HRE?

IN 3.2, if that matters much. But I'd be interested in 4.1 answers, too.

In HttT, i'd say it's definitly a good idea to be part of the empire if you intend to make a life for yourself in Europe.

If you use your oversea provinces to carve yourself an empire on the mediterenean coast, then it doesn't really matter whether or not you are in.

I'd say it's pretty much the same in IN. although the fact that there are less CBs might make it easier to survive on the peninsula without being part of the Empire.

Anything that increases your survival chances is good Even though being in the HRE in HttT can end up costing you a lot due to imperial decisions. (in such case you can leave the empire or become emperor yourself)

If you plan on annexing the city-states of Italy, then join the HRE: If you have a CB, the Emperor won't intervene when you declare war.

Game-wise, it definitely makes sense - a large protector as no extra cost, plus a handful of other bonuses. RP-wise, though, the Most Serene Republic managed to keep itself out of the influence of the HRE through many wars, and historically was descended from the Byzantine Empire, so has to reason to be part of the HRE in the first place.

Thanks. I found that I'd accidentally joined, & wondered if I needed to restart. I think I'll just stay for a while.

I have, however, found myself getting in a war with Austria (HRE) anyway, despite my CB on Sienna, & an alliance with Austria. Fortunately, they'd just got kicked by Poland & Bohemia, so I waltzed over them.

I've now taken about all N Italy I want. The rest are scheduled to be my vassals. So I guess I'll stay a while, then jump.
