Hello everyone. I have finally decided to make a new AAR, my first one with the Armageddon expansion pack. I hope you all enjoy it.

The Soviet Union was formed from the ashes of the old Russian empire of the Tsars, starting with the Revolution in 1917 and culminating in a bloody civil war which lasted from 1918 to 1921. This was followed by a period of Extreme famines and economic instability, along with a power struggle that came with the death of Vladimir Lenin in 1924. Joseph Stalin was able to gain control of the country, and through a period of hard industrialization had mostly rebuilt the Soviet Union's economy.



In 1936, the Soviet Union stretches all the way from Eastern Europe to the Pacific ocean. The country is now one of the most powerful in the world, and things are finally looking bright. However, the resurgent Germany under Adolf Hitler and the Generals of Japan's imperial army eye the Soviet Union's vast territory and resources with contempt, and are quietly planning to rob the soviet people of all that they have worked to build. Will Stalin's communist empire survive the gathering storm, or will the USSR join the growing list of the world's failed states and fallen empires?

Modifications:
1.Industry and infrastructure cost less and build faster. IC costs 3 IC and builds in about half the time, Infrastructure costs 1 IC and builds in about a 3rd of the time. This applies for all nations.
2.Finnish GDE is raised to 1.0, hopefully this will make the winter war more of a challenge.
3.Numerous Graphics and sprites added.
4.Post Axis War Mod added, to create a historical post war Europe.

The members of the Soviet Government at the beginning of 1936. Although Mikhail Kalinin holds the position of Head of State, the real power lies with Joseph Stalin, who controls the country through an iron grip and his own personality cult. His cabinet ministers live and work with the thought that any mistake could spell the end of their careers, and do their best not to anger their undisputed leader.


Research begins to bring the country up to the same technological level as many nations in the west. Research begins on things like Industrial tools, new agricultural equipment and techniques, radar technology, to be used on airbases and warships, computing machines, and new fighters for the Soviet Air Force.


Most beginning production is put into consumer goods, to keep happy the 15% of the population who are displeased with Stalins rule. Earlier, Stalin would probably have solved the problem with a few boxcars, but decides to do this instead to show the outside world that the USSR is a civilized nation. The rest of the country's industry is put into finishing the production of a flotilla of destroyers for the navy, that had been started in late 1935.

Stalin is horrified to read the latest NKVD report on foreign espionage activity within the country. He orders the expansion of the NKVD's counter intelligence units to find and eliminate all enemy agents operating within soviet borders.


The entire Red Army, consisting of approximately 1.36 million soldiers (at least on paper) is gathered in Noginsk, south of Moscow for a massive reorganization. The army is separated into corps sized formations of approximately 30,000 men each, along with a few larger formations built of the USSR's cavalry and armoured forces. They will be redeployed to guard the Soviet Union's western borders, along with the large border with Japanese Manchuria.


In March, German soldiers cross the Rhine River into the German Rhineland, in violation of the treaty of Versailles. The allied power's react by beginning to prepare their nations for war, but nothing more than that.


Once internal dissent finally subsides, Stalin orders a massive industrialization, focused mostly in the central Soviet Union, far from the reach of any potential enemy armies or aircraft.


In east Africa, Fascist Italy concludes its conquest of Ethiopia.

Im not worried about that. I have had those modifications on my game for a long while now, and haven't had any problems so far.


The NKVD begins its counter intelligence operations, finding the first of many spies, and eliminating them.


In July of 1936, tensions in Spain boil over with the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War.


As the fascist powers pour supplies and weapons into the hands of the nationalists, Stalin decides to send soviet weapons and supplies to support the republican government, with the hope that if the republic wins, the country's political situation will move more to the extreme left.


A labour stoppage? In the Soviet Union? Is this even possible?


The first mass run of factories is completed in the fall of 1936.


The Status of Soviet Technological progress at the beginning of the new year of 1937.


The year of 1937 begins with the stunning defeat of the Spanish Republican army in central Spain. 160,000 government troops are cut off and forced to surrender.


The Spanish government surrenders shortly afterwards.


At the beginning of May another run of Factories is completed and comes online.


In July, an incident at the Marco Polo bridge in in Northeast china boils over into full scale war.

As Japanese armies move into China, Stalin, fearful of Japanese ambitions, decided to prop up the Government of Chiang Kai Shek with supplies, aircraft, weapons, and advisors. His only condition is that China signs a non-aggression pact with the USSR.


Even as the NKVD dismantles the enemy intelligence assets inside the country, new enemy agents keep arriving all the time. Not only do the fascist nations send agents, but the British, French, and even the United States are trying to constantly send agents into soviet territory.


More industry!


Meanwhile the war in China continues, as Japanese troops land on the chinese coastline.


Finally, after almost 2 years of constant hunting, the NKVD is glad to report that all foreign intelligence networks inside the USSR have been dismantled. Although spies are contstantly trying to enter soviet territory, the danger of mass sabotage or research theft is gone.


A summary of soviet technology at the beginning of 1938. Note our new research into things such as close air support planes, self propelled artillery and anti tank guns, and continued soviet research into things such as marine infantry divisions, computing and industrial machinery, anti aircraft weapons, and new warships for the navy.


With more IC now available, the construction begins into new army headquarters divisions, to prepare for the inevitable expansion of the Red Army.


At the beginning of March of 1938, Stalin is forced with a difficult decision. Rumors circulate of distrust of Stalin within the command apparatus of the Soviet armed forces. Stalin is unsure of what to believe when he hears of these disturbing reports. He decides that this is nothing other than a bad rumor, and orders the NKVD not to do anything.


Then all hell breaks loose.


After the rumor begins to circulate among the general population, widespread rioting is reported in many major Soviet cities. The people, fearing for their lives, begin to lash out in massive protest marches and civil disturbances all over the country. There is even talk of a possible second Russian revolution.


Stalin orders his security forces not to use excessive force in dealing with the disturbances. Instead, a curfew is put in place all over the country, and the soviet government begins a large communications campaign to calm down the populace. He even orders all soviet production to focus primarily on consumer goods and services, at the cost of delaying the continuing industrial and military expansion.

(This is really the only way I can explain the 30% dissent hit you get for not purging the Red Army. Its kind of unfair in my opinion. People get angry because you spare their lives? Oh well, I guess I just have to roll with it.)

Hitler begins expanding his third German Reich by absorbing little Austria. The allies respond with nothing but more talk.


In china, things for Chiang go from bad to worse as the Imperial Japanese Army ransacks the Chinese Capital.


Four months after the great march riots of 1938, things return back to normal. Stalin's timetable has been badly disrupted, with new factory production months behind schedule.


With more factories online, Stalin orders an expansion of the Soviet Air Force, an important part of the USSR's future combat capability.


In the far east, Japan decides to test the power of the red army, by probing Soviet positions around Chasan Lake. The Red army's performance is lackluster at best, with approximately 3000 soldiers killed in action. Soviet General Blucher, who was in command of Soviet troops in the "incident", is punished for his incompetence.


The 4th run of Soviet industry is completed. Stalin decides that this will actually be the last, believing that the Red Army needs to begin its expansion soon.


On September 30th, German, Italian, British, and French diplomats meet in Munich, and force the Czechoslovakian government to relinquish the German populated Sudetenland region to Hitler's German Empire. Without any foreign support, the Czech's have no choice but to except.


After research concludes into new forms of Infantry weapons and tanks, Stalin orders the beginning of a large scale Red Army expansion.


He also orders more rigorous training for the Soviet armed forces, raising their combat effectiveness.


Soviet Foreign Minister Maksim Litvinov is cought saying things he is not supposed to say, and Stalin forces his resignation. In his place comes Vyacheslav Molotov.

The new year 1939 begins with an overview of Soviet technological progress. Note our progress into new forms of battleships and destroyers for our future navy, along with continuing research into light aircraft carriers, tanks, aircraft, and industrial techs.


Our army HQ's are completed. These units will become the nucleus for 6 large armies consisting of 1 HQ and 5 mot infantry divisions with self propelled artillery each. Each army will also be commanded by some of the Red army's highest ranking field marshals.


On March 15th, Germany invades and partitions the remainder of Czechoslovakia with no resistance. It is becoming clear that Hitler cannot be trusted.


Mussolini, not to be outdone, picks a fight with tiny Albania.


In the wake of German expansion, the allied powers offer an alliance to Poland, which the Poles accept.


The first of many new armoured corps are complete and ready for action. They are equipped with the BT-7 light tank, a new design.

Military expansion accelerates, with the recruitment of new infantry divisions, and the construction of new dive bomber aircraft.


The military also continues to increase its combat readiness.

In the summer of 1939, Japanese troops once again clash with the red army, this time at Khalkin Gol. Unlike the incident at Chasan lake, the Red army comes out on top in this battle, smashing the Japanese army with a large scale armoured counterattack. The Japanese, after realizing that the Red army is far stronger than they can handle, withdraw their forces away from the area and their government signs a non-aggression pact.


A soviet armoured car lies wrecked at the site of the battle.


The Red army continues to build up its strength along the western border. So far, there are approximately 1.1 million soldiers along with hundreds of tanks and vehicles massed in the area.


On August 24th, 1939, the foreign minister of Germany, Joachim von Rippentrop, comes to Moscow to propose a pact between Germany and the USSR. The pact proposes that Germany and the Soviet Union carve eastern europe into their own spheres of influence.


Stalin and Soviet foreign minister Vyecheslav Molotov accept the agreement, and the treaty is signed.


The Soviet Union is now given free reign in eastern Europe, and announces its territorial claims on the Baltic states, Bessarabia, and Parts of Finland.


Hitler, knowing that the USSR will not interfere with his ambitions, declares war on Poland, dragging the world into war for the second time in under half a century.

The polish army collapses in the face of the overwhelming German assault. The only place where the Polish army is able to make progress is an attack on the old city of Koenigsberg.


On September 22nd, just 2 days after Warsaw falls to German tanks, the Soviet army is ordered to move into eastern Poland. Once the polish leadership learns of this Soviet offensive, they quickly surrender.


Germany recognizes the Soviet annexation of eastern Poland, as was agreed to in the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact.

On October first, Stalin sends an ultimatum to the leaders of the 3 Baltic republics. They are ordered to dissolve their nation's governments, disband their armies, and prepare themselves for integration into the Soviet Union. After 2 days, without getting any reply from any of the three Baltic states, Stalin orders the Red Army to invade the three nations.


Soviet troops use their superiority in numbers and armoured vehicles to brush aside all resistance at the border.


The Red Army enters Kaunas, and is immediately counterattacked by 60,000 Lithuanian troops, including 4 elite mountain infantry divisions. A soviet advance force of 30,000 men is forced to retreat, but the arrival of Marshal Vlassov's motorized army stops the Lithuanian advance cold.


150,000 Soviet troops converge on the city of Riga, spearheaded by hundreds of tanks and under the command of Marshal Ivan Koniev. The Latvian army has no answer to soviet armour, and is forced to flee the city.


The Estonian army makes a very brave final stand in their Capital city of Tallinn. their heroism however, is no match for 210,000 soviet troops with hundreds of tanks and Self propelled artillery guns. They are soon forced to surrender after a siege that lasts for about 3 days.


The governments of the Baltic states realize that resistance is pointless, and surrender their nations to soviet authority. (note that I already annexed Lithuania before this screen shot.)


With the Baltic states done with, Stalin turns his eyes in the direction of Helsinki....

Theres a small doc file where you just can change the number of days it takes to build something. Don't remember where it is and HOI 2 isn't installed so i cant look it up

On November 16th, 1939, Stalin sends another ultimatum, this time to the government of Finland. Just like the Baltic states, Stalin orders that the Finish government dissolve, demobilize the finish army, and submit to soviet authority. The Finns stand defiant, and on November 18th, Stalin declares war.



Stalin expects a walkover, just like in the Baltic states, but instead, the Red army encounters fanatical resistance.

150,000 Soviet solders run headfirst into the Mannerheim line, facing only 40,000 Finnish troops. However, the Finnish army has the advantages of terrain and winter weather, and hits the red army with relentless forest ambushes and sniper attacks. In the face of this intense resistance, the Red army is forced to retreat from the battlefield with heavy casualties.


Further east, Field Marshall Tolbulkin encounters a Finnish force commanded by none other than Field Marshall Mannerheim himself. Finnish soldiers once again use the terrain and weather to their advantage, and using similar ambushing and defensive tactics as used along the Mannerheim line, are able to stop Tolbukin's army cold. Once again, soviet divisions suffer disproportionately heavy casualties.

Stalin then orders the Soviet air force into battle. approximately 800 bombers with fighter assistance begin to bombard Finnish logistical networks, destroying roads, bridges, and disrupting communications. The small Finnish air force is grounded as a result.


Unable to break through in the south, the Red Army decides to strike further north, and overwhelm Finnish defenses at Kaajani.


Tolbulkin hits Mannerheim again, this time bringing with him 240,000 men with armoured and air support. The battle is ferocious, with the Red army taking heavy casualties, but eventually they are able to force Mannerheim's withdrawal.


Further north, the exhausted Soviet troops that have occupied Kaajani are forced back by a large scale Finnish counterattack.
