Arms and Armistice
for Hearts of Iron 2: Doomsday & Armageddon
- - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Arms and Armistice (working title) is an alternate history mod that intends to offer a wide range of possibilities with new countries, revamped countries, full custom event chains, and much more. Historically speaking some artistic license will be used and the butterfly effect allows for reasonable scenarios that create a whole new balance of power between nations.

It is likely that I will have to do 90% or more of the work myself. However, this will work out as I am dedicated to the project--this means I will be able to ensure quality is high and stay true to the originality and feel of the alternate world.

Feedback of all kinds is welcome! The more interest others have in this project, the more motivated I am to put in those long hours to complete it. Modding is work

Thank you Atruejedi ;)

Some info about the mod!

Italy has a new flag as you can see, it has a shield with a gold border instead of blue for unity. In the center are crosses and colors representing Italy, Greece, Albania, and the Papacy. These 4 nations and extra territories gained by Italy after WWI are all in a mediterranean-christian alliance.

More to come!

Maybe Socialist Spain should have the Second Spanish Republic flag (red-yellow-purple) instead of the royalist one (red-yellow-red).

Other than that, the mod looks good, is going Germany to be the scenario of a three side civil war (Prussia= Supporters of the Kaiser ,the Military and conservatives , Communist Germany= Communist and Socialists, Austro-German Reich= Nazi and extremist rightwing politicians)?

I thought about using that flag DarkReborn, but I decided to replace the purple with another red bar to stand for socialism. The red-yellow-red is meant to be a new socialist spin on the republic flag and not a modification of the royalist one. It could still change though.

Germania's story reworked:

Germany did not surrender to the allies in the great war until fall 1919. The last battle worthy reserves of German soldiers on the front line were too weak to fight. Although divisions in some areas of the 1919 spring offensive made notable gains, the material shortage had the army teetering on total collapse. It was finally too much for the monarchy and a stubborn Kaiser. Postponing a close to the war was no longer manageable. Britain's effective blockade and internal political dissent meant any prospect of victory was long gone. However, in this time line Wilhelm III was not as weak of a leader, and more competent militarily. The revolution taking place in Russia at the time made it easy for Germany to make large gains against the disintegrating Russian Empire in the treaty of Brest-Litvosk. In AnA time line this historical treaty was not fully repealed by the allies despite plans to do so.

The eastern territories remained under German administration for a short time. Ultimately Wilhelm III was forced to abdicate in late 1919. Capitalists and democrats drafted a new constitution with the support of the upper classes. The German republic was born in early 1920. This would not last, as war damage and hyperinflation fomented bitter feelings among the German people, and at the time, the world. Nonetheless beginning in mid 1921 the German government supported local and national elections in the acquired territories. This worked well in the Baltic states, but influential Polish leaders were not satisfied with German and Russian concessions. Eventually the Second Polish Republic would be established in 1922 regardless.

Countries once under the wing of the German empire then republic eventually began declaring independence. Prussia was established as a reformation of the monarchy and a German government in exile. Germans and Poles clashed near Danzig and Torun as lands granted to Poland were being claimed by Prussia. Red Volksarmee troops were sent into Danzig to stop the secessionist rebellion and stop the fighting with the Poles. This backfired and was seen by the Polish government as a violation of national sovereignty.

Poland saw the activity near Danzig as a strictly Polish matter and feared the communists might try to seize Danzig and other former lands of the German Empire. Polish, Red and White Germans were now in a three sided conflict. Poland declared full independence from Germany and then war. Although the German Volksarmee was arguably the strongest, both the Polish army and the Prussian nationalist army together kept the communists from making any significant territorial gains. Prussia and Poland, concerned about the communist states surrounding them, signed a peace treaty and an armistice with soviet Germany in 1923.

Everything changed when the world markets crashed in early 1926. The worldwide depression delivered a shock to industrialized nations. Hyperinflation reached critical mass and food shortages were frequent. Radical parties with militia in the streets encouraged riot and revolt, clashing with opposing parties on a daily basis. Martial law was declared briefly while the police and some army units intervened and mass arrests took place. Adolf Hitler and many of his National Socialist cohorts were among those arrested.

When leaders of these radical parties were released from prison beginning in 1928, the economic situation was still in shambles and the weary republican government could do little by now to stop the growing extremist parties. Sitting government officials were turning to these mass movements fearing a potential civil war or assassination. However, the weakened but determined Reichswehr was fed up at this point with rallies and street battles. After some scandal and political maneuvering, the crackdown that began in late 1926 was resumed for a time. Emergency laws said to be in the name of protecting democracy in Germany were passed banning political parties identified as extremist or anti-government. The NSDAP was disbanded in Germany as Hitler and those loyal to his ideology fled, along with many others, to Austria. Hitler was a native Austrian, so rebuilding the party in this hotbed of right-wing politics was ideal in that time of crisis.

The government of Germany in 1929 was still bound by the terms of the ahistorical Treaty of Versailles and would not risk violating it. The military was made more artificially weaker than in reality, there was no expansion like in other nations around the world. Germans post-war were facing a disaster of terrible proportions. Revolution could wait no longer and a string of skirmishes between the lesser number of extremist parties in the country sparked civil war. Insurgent units with average organization and arms began to wreak havoc on established authorities and opposing groups. Lack of oil, oil technology, the funds to import oil, manpower, and resources in general stunted the government's effort to stop the war and keep it from gaining moment or expanding.

Months into the growing conflict German police were far from able to restore order. Foreign elements entered Germany and assisted both factions. With the army exhausted and the government destroyed, a socialist republic was declared as well as a neo-monarchist state. The German Civil War reached its climax as the materially weaker but more coordinated German Communist Party defeated the right-wing opposition enough to establish itself as the dominant force in Germany.

Party organs began to take control of more functions and resources. Central economic planning was introduced immediately with a 3-year plan. The new communist government in Berlin had complete control of the economy and by 1931 the remnants of the Reichswehr was merged with existing military groups to form an official Volksarmee or People's Army. Many nationalist and right-wing German military leaders escaped to Austria so leadership of the Volksarmee was poor in the early years. Many citizens fled to Austria to escape some harsh actions and policies of the new police forces. As years went by more Germans were accepting the socialist regime as the legitimate government of Germany. Groups in other nations would also claim to be the rightful government of all Germany.

Germany's neighbors contemplated intervening and stopping the revolution, but it seemed no country would act. Austria was shocked and alarmed at the events taking place in the fatherland. Anti-communist, pro-German, and pro-Austrian parties exploded in Austria. Hitler's new NSDAP grew to be the largest of them all, but it was not enough to take action against the communists. A coalition was formed to force the government of Austria to find a way to stop the communist revolution in the former German republic. This was effective in turning Austria's government from a liberal democracy to a conservative republic. The coalition was merged into a single party under the NSDAP with some adaptations. As the tenshion between Germany and Austria escalated to a boiling point the NSDAP won the coming election by a large margin. As in real history the Nazis are elected into power, except in this history it is in Austria.

In 1931, several months after Hitler becomes the chancellor of Austria, immediate invasion plans were created. The old Austrian army is reorganized and equipped as quickly as possible. Former German citizens that fled the communist revolution gave the Austro-German Reich a technological and financial advantage. Czech lands under Austrian administration provide much needed armor production and design. The Reichsarmee attacked communist held Germany. Volksarmee commanders expected a future conflict but not so soon, they were caught off guard. Nazi forces took nearly all of Bavaria, reaching Nuremberg where they began building a defensive line as the communists regrouped to counter-attack. The northern front became a nightmare for Austro-German generals. Offensive plans were cancelled as a communist campaign was launched with the goal of taking Bohemia and Moravia. Nazi troops used mountainous terrain and unconventional tactics to wear down the larger Volksarmee formations.

The young communist state did not have the resources to sustain a long war against Austria that would uproot Nazi rule. Light skirmishes continued and in 1933 another battle for Nuremburg was fought, but both sides held their ground. Austria had lost a little territory in the north, but gained Bavaria. Bavaria was an important piece of Hitler's growing empire and the origins of the old party. Munich was made capital of the reich. Like North and South Korea, the two German states were in a stalemate, a state of war with heavy defenses guarding nearly the entire line. Shortly after when it was realized that neither side would attack, a temporary armistice was signed. While it was obvious the two ideologically opposed states could not co-exist for long, a time of military build up and rebuilding would follow. It is now 1936, 3 years after the armistice and tensions are as high as ever. With the second Russian civil war raging, it seems war is imminent.

This lloks very interesting! I wish you luck in it! :)

Also, I might have missed it, but why does the UK have Edward VIII as HOS (Wheres it should stil be George V) and not controll Ireland?

Thank you for the support. As for the United Kingdom, I figured since George V dies 20 days into the game anyway I would put Edward in from the start. In this time line the UK was renamed United Commonwealth and the monarchy stripped of any functional government power. Ireland got it's way and is united because of England's political shake up.

hey Ostheim, this mod looks very promising, i look forward to downloading it when its ready!

is it ready to download...

how did u get the shields to be individual and horozonal??

Is Prussia a monarchy...if so who?

what about Russia...is there any chance of Monarcal restorations??

Holy hell how'd you get the shields like that? If you have the displacement map thing, I would friggin LOVE IT. Those flags look BEAUTIFUL!!!

Also for the Slavic Socialist Republic, how 'bout the Commune of Yugoslavia?

Unfortunately no it is not ready to play yet. The preview of the shields being horizontal and together is just how I prepared it in the GIMP. Prussia is Paternal Autocrat with Wilhelm III as HoS and Erich Ludendorff as HoG. Nationalist Russia doesn't have a Tzar but in the same way Nazi Germany and the USSR had new age absolute rulers like Hitler and Stalin, this resugence Russia has Alexander Kolchak as their national leader. He is both HoS and HoG.

I will release a pack for that shield style sometime soon :) Commune of Yugoslavia could possibly work, though I wanted to avoid the name Yugoslavia for alternate history reasons.

Well,I think it is IMHO illogical for Croatia to want Yugoslavia, since it was historically created by the international community after WW1.Most of our politicians, from the moderate HSS to the more nationalist HSP,from which the Ustaše have emerged, weren't for union with Serbia, but it was decided to join them because the Austria Hungary territories populated by the South Slavs had an unsure fate if they would be independent.IIRC,Serbs where more for Yugoslavia.

Yugoslavia is a good name, it means "Land of the South Slavs."

By the way I like your custom colors. I have a colorscale.csv I made myself.

This socialist state was created by communist parties in Bosnia and Croatia, in this time line nationalist groups like the Ustase exist but because of events around the world they do not rise to power--the socialists gain power with help and inspiration from commie Germany and Russia. In this time line there -were- plans for Yugoslavia or possibly all independent states. However the way WWI ended has made Serbia nationalist and PA, completley dedicated to national independence and borders.

Interesting. :)

Isn't "Austro-German" kind of redundant?

And the RSSR, should be the RSFSR

Reasoning is that Hitler took power in Austria not Germany so it's not just German centrism/nationalism that they are promoting but Austrian nationalism too. In this time line, the idea of anschluß is reversed. This Reich still has a pan-German ideology, but I don't think it would fly with Austrians to have references of Austria as a nation and history of the empire completely thrown out. The Reich only controls Austria, a few bits of the former empire (bohemia/moravia), and Bavaria after the civil war. I suppose if the small state conquered all of Germany it would be logical to switch the name ala Großdeutschesreich.

The RSFSR was soon renamed Russian Soviet Socialist Republic because in this time line the idea of the USSR was abandoned because of instability and civil war at the time. The Russian Bolsheviks decided that future communist states loyal to the RSSR would be considered independent but allied states with their own names and governments, regardless of whether or not that state would be a puppet controlled by Russia.
