Should I fear my non-vassal allies in the event of attaining high enough BB to give everyone a CB against me?
I'm concerned that if I did this, Castille, my +200 relation ally, might attack me. What about other, lower relation non-vassal allies? (examples- Venice:+60, and Hungary:+54)

As long as they are allied with you, and none of other allies attacks you...

I asked because I was considering whether or not to diplo-annex my vassal France, which would likely push my BB over the threshold, because they own most of the European French lands, the North American West Coast from Southern Alaska to Southern California, and much of Western Canada.

Alternatively, I could just retain them as the most powerful member of my Legion of Vassals, comprised of France, Morocco, Tunisia, Songhai, Switzerland, Adal, Ethiopia, and Oyo.

1) iirc only vassal allies will never attack you

2) isn't it impossible to vassalize a powerful nation like france in 1.3? i would imagine it would cost several hundred warscore?

France can be diplovasselised. Anyone small enough to force vasselise is only roadbump size.

Vassels will sometimes break vasselisation and DOW - if you really want any of the minor (switz maybe) annex them first.

I'd say go for it, just build up your troop numbers, manpower pool and cash reserves first!

I have never had an ally break the alliance to attack me. What does happen sometimes is that when a war starts they don't honor their alliance, as someone stated earlier. This is a good possibility for the low relation allies, but I think as long as the relationship is very good the chances of them not honoring the alliance are quite small in my experience. (I've had Austria as an ally even when I had a 3-digit BB because I kept a very good relationship with them.)

So if you're thinking about going for military expansion, annex away, the BB wars save you from wasting stability starting your own wars.

It depends on the situation : if the ally is himself allied with a country that decides to declare on you, the ally will side either on you , or on your ennemy... the latter happened to me a couple of times even with good relations

I think I'll wait a few more years before I go to war against the world. First my Australian and Indonesian colonies must be heavily fortified against the inevitable BB-induced Eastern Asian Invasion.

Incidentally, in my campaign, no European power has engaged the Aztecs in either a diplomatic or military context. (I was busy subjugating and converting Africans, and the AI just cares more about North America for some odd reason.) Venice colonized the province at the Westernmost tip of Alaska (Aleut?)
