So are Artillery brigades useful? Well they might have a shot. Lets take a look at what happens when we attach them to a defending unit.
I assumed that we are attacked by 6*N (6,12,18 etc) INFs of the time and either defend with 6*N INF units or with 5*N brigaded units. So both of our setups use the same manpower.
Why this setup? Well on the one hand you, dear forum members, failed to supply me with any idea on how your battles look like, with the exception of blue emu who agreed to my assumption that a N vs. N battle seems to be more or less right for a human defending against the AI. I feel Manpower is the most important limitation for many countries so i figured that i should compare equal manpower setups.
At first glace that looks horrible for Artillery. let compare the BWA:
i) Only INF
In 36: 6^2 * 10= 360
In 39: 6^2 * 12= 432
in 41: 6^2 * 14= 504
ii) Only brigaded units
In 36: 5^2 * 14= 350
In 39: 5^2 * 17= 425
In 41: 5^2 * 20= 500.
So the BWA for ART is always worse.
BUT: Now we know that there are MTE (Multiple targeting effects). Basically that looks on how much the defensiveness/toughness is exceeded. It gives us a factor "y" by which we have to multiply the attack, its always between 1 and 2.
So looking at the above described situation i find:
y for the Defender:
i only INF)
in 36: y_D = 1.30
in 39: y_D = 1.29
in 41: y_D = 1.26
ii only brigaded defenders)
in 36: y_D = 1.41
in 39: y_D = 1.39
in 41: y_D = 1.34
All numbers more or less independent of N.
So first thing you see is that the additional Softattack of the ART yield a somewhat higher MTE, because its easier to exceed the Attackers Toughness.
y for the attacker:
i) attacking only INF
in 36: y_A = 1.22
in 39: y_A = 1.22
in 41: y_A = 1.17
ii attacking brigaded infs)
In 36: y_A = 1.18
In 39: y_A = 1.17
In 41: y_A = 1.12
So what you see now is that the attacker will profit more from MTE if attacking INFs because the ART add Defensiveness, which reduce MTE. This is more important than the lower number of defenders and thus higher chance of being targeted twice or more.
Now if we include these number in the BWA calculation we find
i) For the INF defenders:
In 36:
6^2 * 10 * (1.3 / 1.22) =384
In 39:
6^2 * 12 * (1.29 / 1.22) =457
In 41:
6^2 * 15 * (1.26/1.17) =543
ii) The brigaded Defenders:
In 36:
5^2 * 10* (1.41 / 1.18) = 419
In 39:
5^2 * (10 ; 12 ; 15) * (1.39 / 1.17) = 505
In 41:
5^2 * (10 ; 12 ; 15) * (1.34 / 1.12) = 598
So overall we find that the same manpower in ART brigaded INF has a ~10% higher BWA than the same manpower in vanilla INF.
It still has a 17% higher TC load tough.
