New CTD while playing single player

I've played hours upon hours of HOI2 in multiplayer with only the occasional crash, but I've come across a very frustrating problem when I started up a single player game to test some strategy out.

As the soviets in the 1936 scenario the game CTD either while paused on Jan 1st or Jan 2nd with no apparenty rhyme or reason, with the only actions I've taken are the standard diplo move, strategic redeployment, tech team selection, and trade agreements. So far it's happened three or four times in a row, with a clean reboot inbetween just in case. I have a moderately spacious task manager with the largest programs in the background being FireFox and Winamp (both of which were present in the MP games as well).

I have a WinXP OS with an AMD 1.1ghz processor and a 128MB 5900 Nvida. 1GB ram, and a little over 2GB of free space on C:/. I've experienced CTD over the years I've played HOI2 but this is the first time that it's happened so consistently and quickly. I have a fresh DD-A 1.1 GKCW installed with no other mods.

I'm really, really tempted in seeing whether I can blitz Japan by 37 if only the game would let me.

Edit: +1. I'm gonna give this up for now.

+2. The error pop-up said this:

Quote:
AppName: hoi2.exe AppVer: 1.0.0.1 ModName: ffdshow.ax
ModVer: 1.0.3.1299 Offset: 0001e1d2
FFDShow is the latest version of a video/audio codec I installed to replace the older version I installed sometime last year. I did a little fiddling around with it and so far, 5 minutes it, no more CTD
