Wars of the Roses - long disquisition
Quote:
First, the Wars of the Roses can't be modeled very satisfactorily by just increasing revolt chances. As J. R. Lander liked to point out, the so-called Wars saw no more than 14 weeks when armies were actually afoot in England - over a period of over thirty years! "Wars of the Roses" is really a misnomer for a prolonged period of political instability, caused mostly by Henry VI?s imbecility, and punctuated by a military coups and violent changes of government. Therefore, "rebel scum" in this model should be taken to represent local disturbances - revolts (e.g. Robin of Redesdale's Yorkshire Rising 1469, Lincolnshire Revolt 1470, etc.), feuds between local magnates (e.g. Bonville-Courtney in the Southwest, Norfolk-Pastons in East Anglia), smaller forces of the two main parties (e.g. Lancastrian garrisons at Harlech, Bamburgh, etc. in the 1460s). Because the use of military force between the two factions in national politics was rare and rapidly resolved, events will be used to represent the main battles of the period. In my view, the period 1450-1487 can be divided into longish periods of relative calm, separated by fairly short paroxysms of upheaval in 1455, 1460-4, 1469-71, and 1483-87. The main effect of this cycle of crisis and upheaval was political - a series of hammer blows to England's political stability, rather than prolonged warfare such as occurred in the 1642-49 Civil War. Because the military action was so infrequent (and decisive when it did occur), there was never a possibility of the country fracturing into different occupied zones, such as occurred in the 17th c. (i.e. the PUR and ROY sectors). Given this, the overall effect of these events is to reduce England's stab factor repeatedly. In my view, the decisive turning-point is the battle of Towton in May 1461 - the historical outcome was a change of dynasty and a further thirty years of political conflict. My hypothesis is that a Lancastrian victory would have ended the prolonged crisis by destroying the House of York and their Neville allies, leaving Henry VI in possession of the Crown and his wife and courtiers in possession of Henry's will and authority. Therefore, from the player's point of view, these events boil down to just one choice - for a moment in 1460 you are not just one royal minister, but the aristocracy as a whole. Richard duke of York has been killed at Wakefield, but his son Edward earl of March and his Neville ally Richard earl of Warwick are still bent on a showdown. Do you support them, or do you throw your weight behind the anointed but clearly incompetent king and his grasping, corrupt courtiers - because as the landed elite of the kingdom, you have the power to decide between the two rivals. Victory for Edward of York will mean prolonged turbulence and crisis - but ultimately considerable benefit for a reorganized monarchy and kingdom. Even though Edward's seizure of power led to further violent changes of government (in 1470, 1471, 1483, and 1485) and failed to establish a secure dynasty, his efforts to reform the Crown's sources of revenue - sometimes called the "Yorkist Land Revenue Experiment" or more simply "fiscal feudalism" - laid the foundations for the much stronger kind of government exercised by the Tudors. Victory for Henry of Lancaster, on the other hand, will mean relatively tranquil mediocrity. Had the Lancastrians won at Towton, there is no reason to believe that the unholy alliance of Queen Margaret of Anjou and her ally Henry Beaufort duke of Somerset would have changed their modus operandi - a system of patronage and pork for the benefit of their followers and at the expense of an already severely depleted royal revenue. So, while the choice of a Yorkist victory at Towton will set in train events both positive and negative, a Lancastrian choice leads to a long reign by an incompetent king but no further cataclysm. My "alternate history" for a Lancastrian victory goes like this. The Houses of York and Neville are of course attainted, executed or forced into exile, and their estates seized - however, the gain for the royal coffers is more than offset by the frenzy of petitioning and wheedling, and since Henry VI is infamous for his inability to say "no", the steady erosion of Crown finance continues unchecked. While Henry VI reigns, his queen and Somerset rule, just as they had in the late 1450s, but without any further serious threat to their position now that York's championing of the cause of "good government" against the malfeasance of the court clique has led only to disaster. Meanwhile, the Queen's eldest son Edward prince of Wales grows to a sickly, arrogant and frivolous manhood - but in 1461 the Queen delivers another boy, named Henry after his father - though the wags wonder aloud if that Henry is the king or the duke of Somerset, his minister and the Queen's favorite. Henry VI enjoys a long and futile reign, not dying until the age of 63 (1485), but his eldest son is dead before him, of consumption and gall at the long wait - so that when the aged but less than revered monarch passes away, he is succeeded by his second son Henry, the seventh of the name. Meanwhile, his cousin and namesake Henry Tudor, 2nd earl of Richmond, prefers to remain on his estates and is rarely seen at court, builds a lavish residence in the latest Renaissance style near a town called Market Bosworth, is often heard to grumble about the whims of fortune, and spends inordinate sums on fortune-tellers and astrologers. And now, a list of the events?.detailed description to follow. Cade's Rebellion, 1450 Battle of St. Albans, 1455 Battle of Towton, 1460 Battle of Hexham, 1464 Readeption, 1470 (Conditional on outcome of Towton) Battle of Tewkesbury, 1471 (ditto) Trial of George duke of Clarence, 1478 (ditto) Usurpation of Richard of Gloucester, 1483 (ditto) Bosworth (without further mods, I hope) |

Countsix -
If you look down the threads at some point you'll see detailled suggestions I've made (and am still in the midst of testing). I've modelled the WoTR through revoltrisk not in order to provoke lots of revolts, but to hinder England's progress. As a human player having +6% revolt risk probably won't give you many revolts - indeed you'll probably be able to avoid most revolts. It will mean you have to tread very carefully, perhaps not build tax collectors, not move your sliders and not do other stability damaging thngs and to invest heavily in stability. By building up the revolt risk it gives the player the opportunity of lessening the effects (or avoiding) the WoTR - if the player choses not to alienate York perhaps, not to marry Margaret of Anjou, to pass a proper Act of Resumption, if England doesn't do so badly in France, if Parliament tries Suffolk and if Henry's insanity and Richard's regency doesn't give him the opportunity to demonstrate that he is a superior ruler. On the coding I've put up here it doesn't work as intended - England does get years and years of revolts. At the moment though (hopefully this weekend if I get time) I'm working on a new version where the revolt risk should slowly build in the years running up to the outbreak of hostilies (limiting England's room for manouveur) but events will help keep stability high and hopefully prevent any actual rebellions. When it comes to the outbreak of actual fighting at Blore Heath I will slam stability down and, if the English player has let the revolt risk go up there will serious revolts for a short period. Depending upon their severity, and how well the player (or AI) deals with them either York or Lancaster will win. My ideas for events are under "slowing down the human played england". Like yours, the events that in OTL led to the battle of Towton effectively bring the first part of the war to an end. If Henry wins they get lumbered with him for another couple of decades - and also get an event giving them some relatively nasty economic effects - which I think is reasonable. I haven't included any events for Clarence - not least because it would further complicate the succession. Be interested to hear what you think about including it though. |

My objectives here are to create flavorful events with significant consequences without over-doing it. Though the cumulative effect of these events ought to be to shake England up quite a bit, I hope they are not too devastating. I have also tried to avoid any elaborate chains of events - essentially, the only one which will effect other game mechanics is "Towton".
Question: Is it possible to affect revoltrisk only if a particular country owns the province? Will the revoltrisk affect a province if it isn't controlled by the country the event affects? EventName: Cade's Rebellion Date: July 1450 Description: Throughout the 1440s, Henry VI and his advisors had lurched from disaster to disaster, but by early 1450 the war in France was unraveling, his chief minister was universally condemned, his cousin Richard duke of York was demanding reform and a share of power, and the treasury was as always empty. In the midst of this gloomy situation, the Commons of Kent, Sussex and Essex rose in arms under the leadership of Jack Cade. They marched on London demanding an end to misgovernment, occupied the city and executed the king's treasurer, but after several days the townsmen of London took up arms to drive the increasingly unruly mob out of their city, and afterwards the rebellion soon fizzled. But though the rebellion failed, the Lancastrian regime never recovered from the shock; before a decade was over Henry was king no longer. Triggers: Any date between 1 June and 1 Aug 1450. Suggested Effects: 1. revolt in Kent and Anglia (247, 248) 2. treasury -200 (simulating the financial crisis of that year, not rebellion itself) 3. stabillity -2 EventName: Battle of St. Albans Date: May 1455 Description: Having emerged since Cade?s Rebellion as the chief opponent of the Lancastrian court faction, the king's cousin Richard duke of York pursued an erratic course up to 1455, sometimes using displays of military power to browbeat the court. By 1455, relations had reached their lowest point between York and the Court, and when the two sides came together at the town of St. Albans the result was a confused affray, more street brawl than pitched battle. However, at the end of it, Henry VI was York's prisoner, many of the leaders of the Court faction were dead, and Englishmen had slain Englishmen for the first time in generations. While York attempted to govern through Henry in the months afterwards, the situation in the country slipped out of control as old feuds were settled and violence spread. Triggers: Any date between Apr and June 1455 Suggested Effects: 1. province_revoltrisk +2 in England (240, 241, 242, 243, 244, 245, 246, 247, 248, 249, 250) 2. stability -2 EventName: Battle of Towton Date: 4 Mar 1461 Description: The fighting at St. Albans had destroyed any possibility for political harmony between Yorkist and Lancastrian factions. York found himself outmaneuvered, with no options except capitulation or once again to resort to force. In a series of brief and rapid campaigns, open warfare broke out once more in England. York himself was killed in the battle of Wakefield in December 1460, but his son and heir Edward earl of March gained a victory at Mortimer's Cross in February the following year. Soon afterwards, the rival armies approached each other at the village of Towton, where in the midst of a blinding snowstorm they fought the largest and most brutal battle of the era. When the bloody day was done, the throne of England was the victor's prize. Triggers: 4 Mar 1461 (does the trigger need to be prior to accession date to prevent Henry-Edward-Henry flash?) Suggested Effects: Action A: Edward of March is victorious! 1. stability -2 2. revoltrisk +2 in England (as above) 3. independence Scotland 4. breakvassal Scotland 5. independence Eire 6. breakvassal Eire Action B: Lancastrians victorious! 1. wakemonarch Margaret & Somerset 00008 (see below) 2. sleepmonarch Edward IV 04032 3. sleepmonarch Henry VI 04033 4. sleepmonarch Edward IV 04034 5. sleepmonarch Edward V 04035 6. sleepmonarch Richard III 04036 7. treasury -200 (courtiers pillaging royal treasury) 8. infra -300 (courtiers pillaging royal estates) 9. stability -2 10. revoltrisk +2 in England (as above) 11. aristocracy +1 7. independence Scotland 8. breakvassal Scotland 9. independence Eire 10. breakvassal Eire 11. sleepevent "The Readeption" 12. sleepevent "Battle of Tewkesbury" 13. sleepevent "Trial of George duke of Clarence" 14. sleepevent "Usurpation of Richard duke of Gloucester" 15. sleepevent "Battle of Bosworth" ID 3003 Margaret and Somerset, 1461-85: historicalmonarch = { id = { type = 6 id = 00008} #right ID?# name = "Margaret & Somerset*" startdate = { day = 4 month = march year = 1461 } deathdate = { day = 22 month = august year = 1485 } DIP = 4 ADM = 2 MIL = 4 dormant = yes Remark = "War of the Roses" } EventName: Battle of Hexham Date: May 1464 Country: England Description: After Towton, the defeated faction were driven into exile and disinherited, but they continued to foment unrest and rebellion in England, hoping to regain control of the kingdom. For several years, attempts were made to seize fortresses within England as bases for military action, particularly along the Borders where the exiles received aid from the king of Scots. Finally in early 1464 the royal army intercepted a large exile-led army invading from Scotland at Hexham, routed the force and killed and captured most of the exile leaders. The result was a restoration of stability in the kingdom in the years afterwards. Triggers: Any date between Apr and June 1464. Suggested Effects: 1. revoltrisk -4 in England 2. relation Scotland -100 EventName: The Readeption Date: 3 Oct 1470 Description: By the late 1460s, the Yorkist regime appeared to have gained considerable stability as the Lancastrian cause waned. Edward IV increasingly asserted his right to make his own policy, particularly in his choice of Elizabeth Woodville as his queen contrary to the advice and interests of his ally Richard earl of Warwick and his brother and heir George duke of Clarence. Frustrated and finding themselves isolated from the court inner circle, the two men established contact with the Lancastrian exiles and concocted a plot to remove Edward and "readept" Henry VI, since Hexham a prisoner in the Tower of London. The coup succeeded, but Edward and most of his supporters escaped to exile in Burgundy, where they began to plot their revenge. Triggers: 3 Oct 1470 Suggested Effects: 1. stability -2 2. revoltrisk +2 in England 3. relation Burgundy -100 4. relation France +50 EventName: Battle of Tewkesbury Date: 11 Apr 1471 Description: In March 1471 Edward embarked his return to England with a Burgundian-raised army of 2000 men. Landing at Ravenser on the Yorkshire coast, he soon rallied a larger force and marched on London, meeting and destroying Warwick's army and killing the Kingmaker himself at Barnet on 14 April. Having gained control of the capital (and quietly disposed of Henry VI), Edward turned west to meet another threat. Margaret of Anjou and her son the Lancastrian Prince of Wales had landed with a French-financed army in the southwest and were marching toward the Midlands. On May 4 Edward intercepted and defeated this last hope of the House of Lancaster at Tewkesbury, and according to legend killed the Prince of Wales with own hand at the high altar of Tewkesbury Abbey. With the Lancastrian dynasty all but exterminated, Edward spent the next thirteen years reforming the government and giving England the peace and stability it longed for. Triggers: 11 Apr 1471 Suggested Effects: 1. stability -1 2. treasury +200 (forfeitures, especially Neville family) 3. infra +200 (land revenue experiment) 4. relation Burgundy +100 5. relation France -100 EventName: Trial of George duke of Clarence Date: 1478 Description: Even after his betrayal in 1470, Edward pardoned his brother Clarence and allowed him to retain enormous estates and power, but Clarence's erratic and provocative behavior became steadily more dangerous. Finally in 1478 Edward had had enough; Clarence was charged with treason, condemned by Parliament, and executed. Triggers: Any date in 1478 Suggested Effects: 1. stability -1 2. treasury +200 (forfeiture of Clarence?s estates) 3. infra +200 (land revenue experiment gaining momentum) 4. province tax +1 in England (ditto) EventName: Usurpation of Richard duke of Gloucester Date: 25 June 1483 Description: In the early summer of 1483, Richard of Gloucester seized the throne, murdered his late brother's chief loyalist William Lord Hastings, and probably had his nephews put to death in the Tower. His actions alienated the English aristocracy and led to first a failed revolt by his former ally the duke of Buckingham, and ultimately his overthrow at the hands of Henry Tudor, earl of Richmond. Triggers: 25 June 1483 Suggested Effects: 1. province tax -1 in England 2. stability -2 3. revoltrisk +4 in England (Buckingham's Rebellion, etc.) |

Interesting, though - sounds like you took almost the exact opposite approach. I'm trying to use stability as the main brake, and revolt as an additional "heightener" - sounds like you're doing the opposite. I've tried to go easy here with the effects, but if revoltrisk 6 isn't enough to actually cause them, maybe I need adjust up a little for the 'revolt periods'. Sounds like you're doing a much more detailed version of the WotR, with Henry's wigging-out and all the trimmings. I'll have to track your list down and see what you've got - sounds good. My idea was not to crowd in too many, just a half-dozen (actually ended up with 9) to generate the right feel and result - a screwed-up England until the end of the century, but without much chance of revolters or foreigners partitioning the country. About Clarence - the event is there really to do two things. First, it takes another stab point to reflect this fairly tense but non-military episode. Second though, the event serves as a kind of marker for the high noon of Edward's reign - essentially a vehicle to import the effects of his fiscal policies maturing by that time. |

WotR Event 2. I can't seem to find any info here on the numbering convention, apart from a general category for W. Europe, so I've left these with ???? for ID.

The OTHER War of the Roses
I have developed a tricky problem with my events (though Johnny's discovery of the event = x bug has cleared up some problems!)
I've balanced things nicely - the events all seem to work. But Henry VI won't go away, the cur! Does anyone know exactly how wakemonarch and sleepmonarch work? How do they relate to the start and death date of monarchs? I was under the impression that sleepmonarch worked on a "currently ruling" monarch. Who does it replace them with? Do you need to have an alternative monarch with parallel dates? Do sleep and wake up commands only work with monarchs in the future? Currently my event (intended to replace Henry with Edward) is along the lines of (I can't remember the context, this is just illustrative) sleepmonarch = 99999 (Henry VI, start and death dates are 1422 to 1481 (in case Lancaster wins!)) wakemonarch = 99999 (Edward, dates are 1460 to whenever) The event normally happens around 1461 or so, but isn't on a fixed date (it triggers based upon rebel control of the capital). Do I need to wake Edward first? Does the event need to happen before Edward's startdate? Does Henry need to die naturally (through having two identical Henry's but with different dates and IDs)? Anyone got any ideas? |

Gnome - It is good to hear that your events are coming along nicely. As for your sleepmonarch & wakemonarch problem, I'm not 100% sure what it is, but I have an idea, using what is listed in Havard's Bible of Event Scripting.
According to Havard's website, both wakemonarch & sleepmonarch work by changing the dormant tag on the given monarch. Hence, wakemonarch changes the dormant tag to no, & sleepmonarch changes the dormant tag to yes. Now, the dormant tag is listed in the monarch file. However, I think that changing the dormant tag only affects a monarch who is not currently the monarch. Hence, both commands only affect future monarchs, not the current one. This is the same problem as with the sleepleader command (i.e. doesn't kill an existing leader). There may be a way around this, although I haven't test this. There is a monarch command, which makes a monarch with id tag X the current monarch. Perhaps you could use this command to "force" whomever you wish to become king, & then use the sleepmonarch command to make the monarch being replaced dormant (so that he doesn't come back from the dead). This might solve your problem; I'd be interested in how this turns out. My guess is that monarch & wakemonarch aren't the same command, as Havard's website says.

Cheers Johnny, I'll try that tonight (depending upon whether or not my other half is in the mood to let my hide away on the computer all night. I think she wants to steal my computer away and do "work" on it. Sheesh...priorities!)

No such luck - the monarches are still completely messed up. Hopefully Countsix's events will work out better.
I might have another go over the weekend - I'm itching to try out a 1.04 campaign though! |

Two questions:
1. Does anyone know why there are three separate Bosworth Field events in the major_eng file? 2. How do I find instructions on the event numbering system - I thought I had seen some sort of guidelines somewhere, but I can't find them. |

Here's the latest edition of my WotRa (Wars of the Roses Abridged) events. I've tested these and they seem to be working fine. Note however that they require editing the monarch file as follows:
1) Henry VI ID 04031 - deathdate changed to 22 august 1485 2) All other monarchs with IDs 04032 through 04036 (Edward IV to Richard III, 1461-85) - change dormant to "yes". Note also - I have scrapped the idea of a new monarch "Margaret and Somerset", included in the initial version above #Cade?s Rebellion# event = { id = 22001 trigger = { owned = { province = 247 data = -1 } owned = { province = 248 data = -1 } } random = no country = ENG name = "Cade's Rebellion" desc = "Throughout the 1440s, Henry VI and his advisors had lurched from disaster to disaster, but by early 1450 the war in France was unraveling, his chief minister was universally condemned, his cousin Richard duke of York was demanding reform and a share of power, and the treasury was as always empty. In the midst of this gloomy situation, the Commons of Kent, Sussex and Essex rose in arms under the leadership of Jack Cade. They marched on London demanding an end to misgovernment, occupied the city and executed the king?s treasurer, but after several days the townsmen of London took up arms to drive the increasingly unruly mob out of their city, and afterwards the rebellion soon fizzled.
