Invading the byzantine empire

Part XV

After the civil war and the death of it's ruler, the Seljuk empire fell in the hands of Malik Shah. Under him the the realm refound itself and all the splintered lands sought protection of the Seljuks again. Having finally gained peace within the realm he shifted his gaze elsewhere. He then set out to do something his father had not done. He declared war on the Byzantine Empire.

This was now some years ago. The going was slow. He had several armies marching accros Anatolia. Anatolia was for the most part secured. However the Byzantines had managed to get a foothold in the northern plains. So now Malik did not only had to face the armies from greece but also from Rus. He knew they would win eventually but the coffers were also draining, fast. Perhaps it was best to sue for peace now and fight another day.

He ordered a messenger to him and citated the peacedeal when he was interupted by one of his attendants.

"Sire there is someone here to see you."

"Let him in please."

The man who came in looked so much more mature then he did all those years ago. This probably had something to do with the fact that last time we saw him he was only seven. He bowed and greeted Malik: "Brother!"

"Llywelyn." Malik replied coldly. Malik felt himself not at ease when he saw his little brother. It was a part jelousy that his father somehow preferred this kid above himself the firstborn. Another part of it was something he could not identify or wouldn't. "What is it that brings you here?"

"Can I not come to visit my favorite brother, Malik?"

"You can sure, but you don't come for nothing. So what is it. If you want money I'm short of it myself."

"I am shocked dear brother. I have not come to pry money from your fingers. Nor for any motive that is solely for my personal gain."

"Than please tell us what it is that brings you here standing in front of me."

"I have come to lend you my sword dear brother. I have come to fight alongside you against the Greeks."

"Very commendable of you, however I'm about to make a peace deal with them so you're late."

"Why would you want to do that. Just a bit longer a we'll wipe them of the face of the earth."

"It just takes too long and it's costing me dearly. We can fight another day."

"If you stop now they'll regain their strength and soon have all the northern plains fight for them! You must strike now!"

"So what do you suggest I should do?"

"Grand mobilization." Llywelyn said stoutly

Malik looked at him in disbelief.

A few weeks later armies from all over realm marched towards Greece.

Byzantines seem to be in troubles. Pity really, because they always have such a hard time with Seljuks.

Ahh I think that future of Malik would lead to some stair-accident, or poisoned-dagger-accident

About images - i`m mostly using google search, so like Llywelyn said - try it.

Few examples - I`ve typed ' Seljuk Turks':

link2

link3

Took me about 30sec to find.

Lywelyn seems to have more stomache for ruling that his brother. I bet we'll see him conquer all soon..of course, if he is the antichrist, a campaign against Jerusalem is in order.

Yeah, sometimes you have to fine tune your search; other times, yeah, you have to wade. It helps to be able to think of a specific example (death of Mehmet II, maybe?) and also to know how to cancel out terms when you see a lot of useless junk (ie, -Arafat would remove all results that were showing Yasser's funeral). But you probably already know all this and are just whining cuz you couldn't find the one picture you wanted...

Death of the Byzantine Empire

Part XVI

Malik rode accros the Greek country side. They were chasing a small band of renegades which were still loyal to the Byzantine crown. They would be upon them soon enough. Any fights now were only to take out any resistance still left.

During the siege of Constantinople the then Emperor had died leaving the crown to some Russian princeling who managed to escape before the fall of the city. The Prince fled to the northern lands taking the crown with him. After the siege Malik and Llywelyn split up. Malik would take control of Greece while Llywelyn went after the fugitive Prince.

The fall of Constantinople

Malik began had his doubts about this campaign. Sure they had won and it would only take a little time before it was official but it had taken a hell of a lot of money. And another thing why did Llywelyn want to chase after that Prince? And if it should be done why did he, Malik, himself not do it? Now that he could think about it didn't make any sense at all, but back then it the most logical thing to do. Llywelyn had said he would take care of Prince for Malik and that he needn't worry about it. He had agreed then, feeling already a bit out of his depth with this war. But the time when they were still in Anatolia had been the oddest of all. He was about to broker a peace deal with the Byzantine Emperor when Llywelyn had come to him telling him to press the offensive wiping the insulent Greeks from the face of the earth. Llywelyn went on about avenging their fathers death - which was odd because Alp had died of natural causes - and getting rid of the blight on the borders of the Seljuk empire. Most notably though was the fact that he wanted to 'free the sheep'. Malik eventually had agreed to extent the war but now he found it all rather peculiar.

Finally they spotted the renegades and were preparing to go to battle when a messenger came to Malik's side. He handed him a letter. Malik read it.

"He did what?!" he cried out.

----

"Should we really be doing this?" Asked Llywelyn.

"Yes you should." Said the robed man. His face was not easy to see because he had his hood over his head. But if you could see his face you'd probably turn away quick hoping you would soon forget.

They were standing outside of a wooden hall in the land of Rus. The land was vast and barbaric to Llywelyn's eyes. He didn't really want to be here. Outside the hall stood guards making sure no one entered or exited the building.

"But why?" Llywelyn pleaded. He liked Malik and he really didn't want to do this.

"It's what your father wanted and Malik isn't ever going to grant his wish."

"But he did so much to get it. He deserves it so much more than me."

"Shush, I will have no more of this. Think of all the wonderful things you could do."

"Oh, I can play with woolly things?" He said not even trying to hide the excitement in his voice.

The robed man sighed. "Yes. Now it's time for you to shine, you know what to do."

Llywelyn collected himself, raised his head and inflated his breast. Here stood another man. His figure alone demanded respect and a look at his face would tell you this man meant business. He was a good actor. He strode toward the hall. The guards opened the door and Llywelyn set forth without fault. The hall was entirely of wood and although it was richly decorated in the style of Rus it didn't hold any of the splendour of the Byzantine or Turkish halls. The only thing of any grandure sat on the head of the person at the end of the hall.

"You took your time" That person said.

"I take the time I need." Said Llywelyn

"Yes, I suppose you're in that position."

"Indeed, now hand me over the crown."

"It is only a crown you know, it's not worth anything."

"So you say but you're reluctant to hand it over."

"Y-yes." The figure said. "It is still precious to me, but without it the empire will still live on! It has for a thousand years and it will remain so for a thousand more!"

"Hah! You're nothing more than a Prince of Rus. A barbarian. The fact that the crown fell to you is evidence enough that the empire is dead!"

"When you take the crown from me, it'll be just like it always was. The only thing that changes is the Emperor. The Empire will stand forever. The Empire will consume you like all the others. You'll be nothing more than a name on a long list."

"Silent you insulent wretch!" Llywelyn raised his sword, which now hung threateningly above the Prince's head. "Give me the crown! NOW!"

"Alright!" He lifted the crown from his head and held it out towards Llywelyn. "I care for it not anymore."

"Good" With that Llywelyn took the crown from the Prince's hand and threw it onto the ground. He raised his sword once more and he struck down. The crown shattered. "I want that melted!"

"And what will you do with me." Asked the Prince, resigned.

"What would you do if it was the other way around?"

"I would kill you."

"I am going to let you live, you mean nothing to me." With that Llywelyn strode out of the hall, leaving the Prince and Rus behind him.

A bit of a lengthy update there, hope you like it and the pics in it.

A disclaimer is in order I think. As you can see I edited a bit. This was because I wanted to claim the byzantine title without going full length into Russia. I did do some campaigning there but not to the conquering extend. I hope you agree that the editing has not been to my benefit.

Now a bit of feedback I've been letting out on:

RGB: Thanks, glad you like Alp and his end!

TM:

Partly right there, good enough in any cas The scotland thing is Aquitaine, breakaway vassal of France. Judea is in the hands of the emir of Jerusalem. The rest is correct. Now what is this red thing?

Jimbo: I'd like to hear that handicap of yours especially with the new information.

Lly:
Quote:

He has help Besides he has a nice diplo skill (not great but nice)

OP: I know, but I just had to get rid of it. Leaving such an unstable thing around is just an eyesore. And it's not really gone... not really

TM: Heh... maybe, but I think he'll die just like his father... but everything can happen in this AAR.

Jimbo: It's all an act. And conquering all? Seems hardly possible

There goes the neighbourhood. A Welshman might be able to rule the empire.
But 0 intrigue sounds like a guarantee for civil war - if the emperor is lucky.
i suspect he may run afoul of the even more Byzantine methods of hastening a succession.

Well my proposed handicap was to be giving Lly the Persian sultanate and your emir titles, along with losing the chancellor..but you've taken that out. Nice update, got a sense of story. In light of the new information, I think your handicap should be..reload as the Emperor, and declare war on Malik you can NOT use the byzantion regiment. Alternatively, on the Fatimids, who I believe hold Jerusalem. Of course, it's a Seljuk AAR as the title declares, so if you're sticking with Malik I'd say grant away Baghdad and the Mesopotamian sultanate, and declare war on the fatimids and the Emperor (heck, why not all bordering nations..), demesne units only.

My suggestion is that Malik converts to Judaism. While everyone else stays Muslim.

Whooa! Did you create new title, or it`s just modded Byzantine title? Rhufain = Rome isn`t? Very good update, Llywelyn seems to be kinda machiavellian character - you should rise his intrigue. Very good update

BoS: Rus Barbarian? You for real?

Also, Lly, I half expected crewcut and fatigues. That picture is severely disappointing.

BoS: I like the Judaism idea.
