Grrr Zanzibar!

I'm playing a game with Ethiopia and i'm through to 1622. I currently have a city next to a Castille province, relations are at 114 and my Chief has administration skill of 7. Is it now just a waiting game for westernisation?

Now a gripe. Zanzibar irks me. It took three wars with the Swahili to force vasselise them and grab the provinces I wanted because of zanzibar. My country now spreads around through south africa to west africa but because I can't annex the swahili (because I can't take zanzibar) I am losing 30% tax in over half my nation. I could load a save as my vassel Yemen and take zanzibar after starting a war before the save but it seems too fiddly.

As I see it zanzibar should have a connection to the mainland, as it is an inconvienience to the africans that might take the swahili and to the swahili themselves. Having to keep a token army on zanzibar which can't be utilised elsewhere to quash rebelions because they CAN'T get back to the island and would lose it until they westernise, seems absurd. Not to mention the logical gap that they own the province in the first place when they can't get to it. How did they get there in the first place?

And finally, (i know i'm ranting.. sorry) pirates. These guys are an absolute curse to african nations as they have no means with which to remove them at one point I did load a save as yemen to clear the entire east coast of africa of pirates which were destroying my economy. There has to be some way to combat them. I have vassels that can build ships. I believe I should be able to commission ships from them (maybe high maintenance mercenary ships). Or maybe a feature to call their fleet to a location they are my subservient vassels after all. I know i'm just frustrated (I resign and load now when pirates appear). Anyway cheers for reading my first post.

Kaltorak;

I had those same frustrations, especially since Ethiopia was historically a bit more advanced that African tech would seem to imply.

The change can't help you now, but the way I solved the problem was move Ethiopia to the Muslim tech group, which enabled me to build ships and thereby conquer Zanzibar.

I agree, though, it's a real problem, otherwise.

Meaning you got it when you controlled most of Europe and didn't need it?

No, I spent all my investments on gov tech and immediately took QFTNW. Then i sent an army up to the HRE and landed on a one province nation without an army or a nearby ally. So basically i could only see a few provinces in the HRE but if its Terra incognita you get free military access to that nation. Oddly enough I was elected HRE about 30 years after westernizing.

I don't think this is true with the new patch. At least not in my experience, it just dumps your conquistador back into the province it came from unless you are at war/actually have a military access. And as it is it would we very expensive to get military access with the neighbours you need to get through to get to europe. They are Muslim and hate you. And you certainly can't compete with the mamluks militarily. Maybe I could of tried through Yemen/Oman and up the side there.

Either way it has little to do with my current situation. Is been next to a latin province with which you have 100+ relations and have a leader with 5+ ADM ability the only requirements for westernisation?

As to the zanzibar issue perhaps vassels should provide a land link to your other provinces... just a thought.

Yes, conquistadors moving thru other countries as if they had military access has been done away with in 1.2.1.

I'd like to see this. It would reduce the need to annex everything.
