Military Orders - The Knights, Teutonic Order
Really dont like seeing The Knights and Teutonic Order as Theocracys, both nations are weaker then they should be i think. Would be nice to see a new form of goverment Military Order, giving them +0.1 morale or +5 to land and navy investment or some sort of defense bonuses, making it harder to just run them over with a large army.
The Knights of St John were forbidden to bare arms against christians, not sure if the Teutonic Order had such laws but this could be a way to balance things. And also The Knights start with 0 gold and maltese culture in 1453 - whats up with that? Would be much more correct if they had Cosmopolitan as main culture with Umbrian, Lombard, Catalan, Castilian as accepted cultures (and even English at that time period). And they were a rich order with estates all over europe and with the catholic church backing them up. |

The Manga Mundi mod makes some interesting changes to how knightly orders works. Check them out. I agree that vanilla should be changed a bit where the orders are concerned to reflect their special status o christendom. Idea: Perhaps a charter of some kind. Issued as an event by either the pope or the defender of the faith of a religion, giving the knightly order in question more money, manpower etc. This charter would expire if they declared war on a nation of the same religion. It could also expire if they had really bad relations with the nation that issued the charter. Magna Mundi does something like this, but I haven't read the changes in depth.

Well theocracy gives them the ability not to be force-converted and prevents normal conversion. Having them convert to another religion would defeat their purpose of existence.

In my game, I just added a new government type called "Crusading Religious Order" with a ruler called a Grandmaster. I disallowed Royal Marriages and religious conversion, just like a Theocracy. Also, it gets a boost to manpower rather than a bonus to religious conversion. Then I added it to the history files for The Knights and the Teutonic Order and the game looked so much better in terms of aesthetics.
I also made a "Caliphate" form of government, so that if I play an Islamic nation, I don't have to be called "Archbishop". I strongly suggest modding the game yourself. It's really easy, and this is just a way to clean up some minor problems in the game.
