Utrecht Flag is incorrect presented
The flag for the Archdiocese of Utrecht (in the demoversion of the) game) is not correct. Did a flag for Archdiocese Utrecht exist? I don't know, if the answer is yes the flag was conceivable the same as the Savoye flag. A historical flag for the profane Utrecht province was reconstructed two years ago. That flag flew at the bowsprit of the provincial Utrecht yacht during the Sail 2005 event in Amsterdam.
http://www.provincie-utrecht.nl/prvu...D?opendocument If you visit the information source you can see that the 1st and 4th quarter of the Utrecht flag are incorrect presented. Those two quarters are simular to the coat of arms of Sticht Utrecht the official the name for the Utrecht theocracy. It's coat of arms are in red a white (silver) cross. Also today this is the coat of arms for the Archdiocese of Utrecht. The 2nd and 3rd quarter in the flag are simular to the coat of arms for Holland, in yellow (gold) a red lion. The central scutcheon is the coat of arms for the city of Utrecht. This historical flag is indentical to the current provincial Utrecht coat of arms that came in use for the first time in 1582. The central scutcheon disappear between 1584 and 1705. http://www.ngw.nl/u/utrechtp.htm To use this profane flag for Sticht Utrecht is not correct but arguable. This because its beauty and also because the (most) correct flag is indentical to an other flag in use (Savoye). A good option in my opinion is to use a believable fantasy flag. By example: a flag vertically cut into two bars. The vertical bar along the mastside is red, the other bar is plain white. Across the red bar is a white cross placed (the emblem for Sticht Utrecht) Because the game is very modfriendly it wasn’t a problem to fix the incorrect flag. I have used Corel PHOTO-PAINT for that. It took me some minutes and YES, also the waving flag on the 3D map was changed without any problem, great!, so easy to fix ![]() About Sticht Utrecht After Utrecht lost in the Middle Ages the Veluwe region to Gelre it's territory was separated into two parts. The part named Nedersticht (Lowersticht) was approximately the same as what is the current territory of the Utrecht province. Only this part (Nedersticht) is presentend in the game. The other part was named Oversticht and that enclosed the current Dutch provinces Overijssel, Drente and in name also the city of Groningen. This second and lager part don't exist in the game, if it is created by a game-modificaton it must be placed between Gelre and Friesland. The autority of the archbisschop of Utrecht was in the city of Groningen very weak. In practice that city developed itself into a free imperial city (not recognized by the Holy Roman Emperor) and tried to achieve authority in Friesland. I think this is the reason why in the game Groningen is presented as the Frisian capital, in real it's Leeuwarden (Ljouwert).
