Cassi belli

I want to pre-empt the usual 'Covered it a thousand times' complaints by saying that, as MrT requested, I have looked through the past several days posts and can find nothing covering this topic.

How does one get cassi belli?

The issue came up when I was playing the demo as Bavaria. Naturally wanting to expand my beginning lands, I went after my smaller neighbours, Salzburg then Franken. Of course, after I'd accomplished those two annexations, the world didn't think so much of me. Then I attacked another neighbour (can't remember which one). That led to a larger war in which I annexed Pfalz, Koln, Elsass and another province or two. The world hated me. I was actually called 'scum'. But I had high prestige, and generally good relations with my important neighbours (Austria, Brandenburg, Hesse).

All of these wars were accomplished with no cassi belli, so my stability was pegged at -2/3 for quite some time.

I had a border dispute event at one point, which gave several countries CBs versus me. This finally came in handy when Bohemia invaded. Finally, a war that wasn't my fault! I also had a war with France after I took Liege, so I suspect that maybe Liege is one of their disputed cores.

So, what precisely are the ways one gets CBs?

AND, how important is it? The only real problem the low stability seemed to get me was 0 merchants for quite a long period of time. And I wonder that maybe when France and Bohemia invaded, they were attacking a 'bad country'. None of my allies stuck with me in either case. I wasn't sure if this was due to my bad reputation or simply the fact that I was fighting one of the major nations - they always seemed happy to go along on my one-province annexation binges.

I suppose my question is first quite specific:

1. What are the possible ways to gain a CB?

and secondly more general

2. What are the effects of:
a) Low stability (and how much need we care?)?
b) A bad reputation (same follow-on)? For instance, if you're honourable, do your small allies stick with you in wars with France, or do they still abandon you anyway out of fear?

Thanks for the help.

...in the UK, still waiting for the little package in the mail...

Well the way's you can get Cseus Belli are:-

-Boarder Issue Claim events on other provinces (got a few of those today)
-Claiming a throne i belive...
-Relations Events ( think i got one of those today)
-War Caseus Belli from when you take land from enemy in peace terms you get a permanant one iirc when i had my wars and won.

I can only go from what ive experienced and seen when hovering over things, alot of it will become self explanitory to you once you get the game hope you get it threw the post soon.

I think you mean "Casus Belli." "Caseus Belli" means "Cheese War."

Any country that owns one of your core provinces, you get a c.b.

If you are a defender of the faith, you get a c.b. against all countries at war against another member of your faith.

Having a trading embargo will give one to the embargoed country.

Cancelling a vassalization.

Proclaiming a guarantee of independence will give one to you against any country that goes to war against the country you are guaranteeing

A country that goes to war with anyone after you have issued a warning to them.

Sending an insult will give a c.b. to that country against you.

Claiming a throne against a royal married country will give you a c.b. against them (I think, that or them against you).

Not paying a loan from another country will give a c.b. for the lender.

Certain spy actions may give the target a c.b. against you.

Some events.

Disagreements over cheese

I don't understand why a claim is not a CB. Does anyone know?

Claims are CB's.

If you have a claim on a province owned by another country, you have a "permanent CB" on them.

Claims to the Throne (the diplomacy action that requires a royal marriage) gives YOU a "temporary CB" on that country, but annhilates your reputation and your relations with other countries you have a RM with.

It's a little known fact that one of the bloodiest wars in the history of Limburg was the "Great Cheese War of 1672". The neighboring baronies surrounding Limburg united and launched an assualt on the city when they had finally had enough of the stench from the manufacture of the cheese which bears the Limburg name.

Can you imagine that... "John III was involved in the epic Cheese War. Our armies were victorious..."

My question is this, how can I see what countries I have a CB on? Does it show up on the diplomacy map? And what does it look like? I was mystified on the demo trying to see who I had a CB with and if me "claiming" a throne had any effect.

Easiest way I know is in the game ledger under "diplomacy". Lists your CBs, who has a CB on you, etc.

You can go into the Ledger and see who you have a CB on.

Many things I like about EUIII, but I still miss some of the ease of finding data in some cases. Such as this and determining when things end. Not knowing the end dates of CB/Alliances makes planning of things very difficult.

Havn't read this all, so maybe it has been mentioned:

Deus Vult - the national idea effectively gives you a cassu belli against all nation with another religion than you.

A more or less legitimate reason to declare war on someone. In EU, your stability takes a hit if you declare a war without having a casus belli.

It means "good cause", ie a legitimate reason for going to war.
