Is this a bug?

I was playing Prussia/Germany. After the Franco-Prussion war I accidentaly forgot six divisions in some backwater place in central France. As it was that unit happend to have a general with reduced attrition. So far so good.

Due to my rather high BB score (and France being bitter at me), as soon as the peace-treaty was over, they declared colonial war on me. Now in a normal colonial war I can't put foot on french states, but since the divisions were already there, they started capturing the province. After a short time they captured it. I then made my way for Paris and captured it soon thereafter long before they could react to it. So I now held the French capital in a colonial war

Holding Paris gave me a ridiculously high war score and after a short period France offered peace, giving me all their african holdings (including marocco, algeria, etc) and most of annan (I had captured a few provinces of france in africa, but that's it)

Now I'm not sure but I think it shouldn't be possible to capture the french capital in a colonial war, should it?

No this is most probably a bug due to fact that you should not be able to set foot inside someones States when at colonial war. Once there though it seems like it's A OKAY to start ravaging the countryside.

What happened if you encountered enemy troops? Was there a battle or did they just walk past all friendly like?

Yes, you can.
As long as you can march to a province, you can capture it - in colonial and proper wars. i.e. if russia has colonies in Asia, and they declare colonial on you (with colonies in Asia) you can capture the colonies and St Petersburg.

As you were already in a state, the same applies.

It is, in fact one of my favourite tricks as the UK after annexing China.

Could you explain then why I'm unable to enter US states when fighting a colonial war against them as Mexico?

I had colonies and states in North America, as did they, but I'm unable to move into their states, only their colonies.

Theory - Russia's colonies are in Asia yet are contiguous to their European holdings, while Mexico's colonies and states are on the same continent.

A loophole that should be patched. Will note to developers.

Do you think it could be that the USA made a state of all its colonies after the colonial war was declared (which having them on the same continent allows) as the USA did to me back in 1.02 days?

I destroyed them

most troops were of course at the border, so I was undisturbed at first, but the few ill-prepared troops that I did encounter were dealt with swiftly

after that I just dug in at paris and let them throw their troops at me ...
