A struggle against democracy and Bolsheviks (German AAR 36')

A struggle against democracy and Bolsheviks
– A German AAR 36’ C.O.R.E.

Chapter 1 – The peaceful takeover of Austria and Czechoslovakia

Panzers in russia

This AAR will be my first ever, I normally play HOI2 against some of my friends via LAN which is a lot of fun, but now I will try with a single player game..

The difficulty is set on normal/normal since I haven’t played many games in the C.O.R.E mod, so the tech-tree is still new to me.

It all starts in 1936 were I take control of the German forces. My overall plan is defeat the Allies and the Communist, which will not be an easy task. The Army has first priority, but it will also be necessary with a strong navy if an invasion of Britain is going to be possible.

The kriegsmarine get some new toys early one, since a lot of the ships already was in production in 1936.

Besides the submarines, an expansion of the industry was started in some regions of Germany.
The first years went slow and steadily and I got Austria in a series of events on the 13th of March 1938. The next year Czechoslovakia had to give in to the pressure of the German army.

The takeover of the Czechoslovakia (17th March 1939)

From the year 1937 I started a production of infantry to the invasion of Poland, which was inevitable. To quote from von Manstein’s book lost victories:

“Poland was bound to be a source of great bitterness to us after she had used the dictated peace of Versailles to annex German territories to which neither historical justice or the right of self-determination gave her any claim. For us soldiers she had been a constant cause of distress in the years of Germany’s weakness. Every time we looked at the map we were reminded of our precarious situation. That irrational demarcation of the frontier!”

So I started making my troops ready for a war against Poland and moving them to the borders...

Chapter 2 – Operation Plan White (historical name)

The Poland Theater before the war breaks out.

The troops are organized in 3 armies a north, middle and south army.

North Army (Field marshal v. Blomberg)
- 16 inf. Divisions

Middle Army (General v. Rundstedt)
- 29 inf. Divisions
- 3 tank divisions
- 1 cavalry division

South Army (General Hausser)
- 9 Mot. Inf. Divisions
- 5 inf. Divisions
- 1 mountain division
- 4 light tank brigades

The main idea was to use the speed of the motorized divisions to quickly secure the key provinces and end the war as quickly as possible; furthermore I wanted to make and encirclement by taking the province Lodz from Oppeln and Elbing.

The war broke out the 30 August 1939 and the troops attacked as planed.

The first step of the plan to defeat Poland (30 August)

The polish troops was outnumbered and their equipment was still from the ww1 period, so the polish forces was pushed back on all points.

1 September 17:00

The panzer divisions leaded by Manstein and Guderian quickly secured Czestochowa and was on their way to close the pocket.

2 September 9:00

The pocket has been closed and the trapped divisions were attacked. General Huassers motorized infantry was moving quickly against Lvov. The 3 September France entered the war to help Poland, and I didn’t have enough troops at the border to avoid a breakthrough.

France attacks Freiberg on the 3 September

I don’t see the French attack as a problem since it was only going to take a couple of more days to take Poland and then my troops could help on the western front.
The pockets were smashed, while the rest of the key provinces were captured without problems.
On the 8 September only 8 days after operation plan white was started, Poland was annexed. The operation was a total success were the mobility of my German forces was the key to defeat a clearly slower enemy.

Now I need to get my troops to the western front to deal with my new enemy France..

I will do my best .. I felt that Germany was the logical choice for a first time AAR writer, but I hope I can make a good AAR even if there has been made a lot of German AAR before mine.

Chapter 3 – The battle of France

After the victories in Poland, I needed to move my troops quickly to the western front which only had 11 divisions to defend the frontier!

A lot of divisions crossing Germany in high speed, meanwhile other divisions sets up a long the new German/soviet boarder.

13 September 6:00

The French troops were now in Friedrichshafen and I saw a great opportunity to trap 6 divisions by attacking Freiberg. The battle was commanded by v. Manstein whose panzer divisions had arrived first on the western front.

15 September 8:00

Mansteins attack was a success and shortly after I attacked Friedrichshafen to capturer the 6 French divisions. The attack was almost decided before it started and lead to a disaster for the French army.
Now I had control with the French offensive and troops from Poland was still arriving, so I could start my own offensive..

This was the end of this short update, the next chapter will cover the offensive in France which starts with a starts rather badly for me…

Chapter 3 – The battle of France Part II

I made a daring attack to get an early breakthrough.

I saw the chance to blast through The Maginot Line with an attack from Freiberg, Stuttgart, and Saarbrücken. There had arrived reinforcements at Mulhouse, so I attacked Strasburg with a total of 23 divisions against the 5 French divisions. The battle started promising, but I could soon realize that I had underestimated the value of The Maginot line. I stooped the attack to save my German troops from a total slaughtering.

On the 21 September the first German attack was stopped at The Maginot Line after 3 days of horrifying combat and heavy German casualties.

I had to use 36 IC to reinforce my attacking forces, so the attack must be described as my first failure as commander in chief of the army. I now decided that I would use the “Sichelschnitt” to take France..

facts not to be taken easy on (from Wikipedia):

The Maginot Line

The specification of the defenses was very high, with extensive and interconnected bunker complexes for thousands of men; there were 108 main forts (grands ouvrages) at 15 kilometres intervals, smaller (petits ouvrages) and casements between, with over 100 kilometres of tunnels

Chapter 3 – The battle of France Part III

The attack on the lowlands was carried out the 2 October and lasted 1 week.

With all the necessary troops available it was an easy task to take Holland, so I quickly made ready for Belgium.

Belgium was another walkover for the superior German army.(*The imperial march from starwars playing in the background )

I was now ready to make another try with an offensive of France. I placed my tank/motorized divisions out close to the sea with the idea that the French troops would be concentrated near the Maginot line and therefore would my tank/motorized divisions be able to rip open the right flank and take Paris, meanwhile my infantry would surround the Maginot line.

Early victories by v. Rundstedt, v. Manstein, Guderian and Huasser made the first waves of attacks a success.

Now the offensive was rolling and the attack at Strasbourg was soon forgotten..
