Comrade Trotsky in a typicaly relaxed pose prior to the New Years Day seizure of power.

There was an awed hush from the party as the 18th Party Congress results were read out to the assembled workers, peasants, and soldiers deputies.

Comrade Tukachevsky had already risen to his feet to applaud the arrival of the long absent comrade who most, if not all, people in the same room had believed either dead or banished forever.

Leaning on his companions, Leon walked towards the podium to give his first address to his comrades since the original defeat of the left opposition so many years ago. Yet now he returned in triumph - his main political opponent discredited, and his own prestige having never been higher. Comrade Trotsky knew that any drastic changes would shake the already tottering workers state to its knees, and it was with some trepidation that he announced that no changes would be made to the Politburo aside from the removal of Stalin, and several of his more prominent lackeys.

Turning to face the assembled deputies, Trotsky knew it was time to lay out his plans for the future of the workers and toilers of the world.

government5oc.png

The new Socialist government included many Stalinist hacks. Time will tell if this situation changes or not.

Even as he took control of the organs of the party after the skillful execution of his plans to topple the corrupt Stalinists, Trotsky knew there were many battles to be had, not least of all the quelling of incipent rebellions within the population of the diverse Soviet Union. In light of these needs, production was focused on the key agendas to reduce the high rural and urban dissent.

production6jf.png

Estimates of the time indicated that approx 15% of the entire peoples of the Soviet Union - notably the Georgian, Ukrainian and Kazakh soviets were displeased with the sudden capitulation of Stalin following the declaration of loyalty to Trotsky given by the red army.

After a lengthy session of the Congress, Trotsky returned to dictate his immediate plans to his allies within the Party.

trotsky.jpg

Trotsky seen dictating his plans to lift the USSR out of its stalinist stagnation.

First and foremost on his mind was the immediate threat of the fascists and counter-revolutionaries to the west. Trotsky knew that to secure the peace of the workers state it would have to defend itself more vigourously than Stalin had planned, and this security would in no small part depend on his own creation - the red army. With this in mind, and with the knowledge of the diverse agents of the revitalised Comintern that the new threat of Nazism would not threaten the workers immediately, Trotsky set his plan into motion for the long term survival of the workers state.

techslotstart0na.png

Trotsky's insistence on the development of the navy concerned many in the soviet union at first. Time would tell how correct his decisions were.

With his awareness of the debt he owed to the Red Army, Trotsky set in motion his plan to centralise the governing bodies of the red army. Hours after his arrival at the Party Congress, the leading generals of the red army recieved their marching orders... On arrival many would learn what they had hope for after so many years. For others, it would mean the relinquishing of their positions.

redarmycentralisation3gg.png

Red Army formations march towards Moscow to consolidate Trotsky's government and discuss strategies for defending the workers state.

With all plans proceeding like clockwork, Trotsky was only then able to relax. The year was young - his own enemies hiding and dispirited. Soon he would achieve the dream of Lenin and himself of spreading workers democracy and uniting the world behind the red flag. However for the moment caution seemed the better cause than valour. As crowds hoisting red flags continued to swell red square, Trotsky could rest knowing at least that for the first time since 1921, the revolution was again on course...

index.jpg

Trotsky's later history of these crucial days was represented by this cover to one of his books, showing heroic men and women mustering in red square - determined to defend the revolution against any and all counter-revolutionary's.

(Note - this AAR is my first after so many years of playing Paradox games. Hopefully the many fine AAR's I have had the pleasure of reading will help me make this not unpleasant to follow.)

Having been inspired by many others to finally have a go of it, this first attempt utilises HOI2 Doomsday 1.1. Any mod's are purely cosmetic - ie, merely cut and pastes, rather than serious game file editing. Any issues that arise that seem particularly at odds with the new political leadership of the USSR will be dealt with on a case by case basis in regards to editing. I hope to make it through to games end however with no edits at all.

Given my habit of playing multiplayer games rather than SP, I hope to make this interesting in regards to fighting the AI by following the unpredictable lead of the Party Congress - as represented by anyone who feels interested enough to post in this thread with their suggestions. The game is played on normal/normal commencing on Jan 1st 1936. I aim to play no further than the latest post here - ie, you will all know as much, or close to as much, as I know about future events.

As such, I will be following a broad 'trotskyist' strategy - eg, the purge event will be treated from a different standpoint than perhaps is normal. However by and large I hope to have my strategy guided by suggestions and contributions to this thread (aka - consider yourselves party members attempting to jostle for influence in a new, slightly more forgiving Soviet Union). As the title suggests however, the aim is to expand, and spread communism.

trotsky in power? so youre going to leave your borders unguarded?!? good start :)

This is supposed to represent a 'gathering' of the military leaders. My borders won't be completely unguarded (even though of course, we know they could be entirely defenceless until much later in the game).

A brilliant idea! I knew someone would make a Trotsky AAR one day.

Thanks. I'm just curious to play with the idea of approaching the game from a particular political viewpoint, rather than merely playing to win.

As the 18th Party Congress wound down, the excitement of the populace was palpable.

Very swiftly however other nations indicated their desire to test the resolve of the new look Soviet government. Numerous attempts of the capitalists and their lackey's to infiltrate the workers state were detected. Swift action was taken to attempt to bolster the defences of the USSR on all fronts.

spies0um.png

However it was with some relief that the workers and peasants states in Mongolia and Tannu Tuva demonstrated their willingness to co-operate with the new regime. Sensing a chance to extend the benefits of the revolution to the newly rising power of Mao in China, a warm offer was extended to these people to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Soviet Union. The response was less than had been hoped for...

chinaally6gu.png

Similar attempts to extend the fraternal brotherhood of workers to the peoples of Spain met with limited success, however trade deals were opened up with this nation following the election of a new government.

spain6ak.png

spaininfluence4xr.png

Spanish ministers met with Soviet officials, but little if anything at all, was achieved.

However internationally all did not stand still. Emboldened by the momentary weakness and reorganisation of the red army, the fascist legions under Hitler seized control of the key Rhur industries.

rheinland_1936.jpg

Nazi troops march into the Rhineland. Local communist cells were able to report back to the Soviet Union on the organisation and methods employed by these jackbooted thugs in uniform.

Whilst the Soviet Union unconditionally condems the treaty of the victors at Versailles, it is wary of the growing power of the fascists in Europe.

rhinelandevent2zv.png

Despite these international setbacks, Trotsky was able to convene an extraordinary session of the Politburo to make clear his plans, and those of the newly revitalised party. Gradually, as the benefits of his economic and political strategies were unveiled, many who had been seething at his return gradually came to agree with the new policies. Notably the Georgian secretariat publicaly renounced his earlier concerns. Dissent within the party was largely quiescent, and all this with little cost.

Somewhat out of the blue came some interesting news. Citizens of the city known historically as Tsaritsyn, and more latterly Stalingrad called impromptu meetings and demonstrations demanding the removal of the name of this now discredited former leader from their city name. By popular approval, the city was renamed.

stalingrad5ed.png

Trotsky apparently was opposed to this change, seeing the damage that Stalins own cult of personality had done. Massive popular demand did make him keep his objections private.

With his popularity on the rise, the new plans for industrialisation of the interior were easily passed through the party bodies. Harnessing the might and efficiency of the peoples of the Soviet Union, massive plans were laid for the electrification and industrialisation of the urals and Volga bend.

industry5lf.png

Soviet plans to industrialise put the rest of military production on hold.

It came as little suprise however when elements of the party reported that the deposed Stalin had escaped from the confines of his house arrest in the remote town of Yekaterinburg. Officials combined with local Komsomnol members to try to find the criminal and bring him back to the safety of house arrest for his own protection. However after several weeks of searching, the elusive priest turned communist turned criminal was not found...

TN_Collectivising_Banner_1930.jpg

Local party members rally to promote the campaign to recapture the renegade Stalin.

Pictures of him at his trial were posted to point out his capture would benefit all who had suffered under his tyranical regime. It was assumed however that the demaguoges own persistent promotion of his own image could now aid in his final undoing.

stalin.jpg

Stalin faces his many critics during his trial

As winter turned to spring, and snow turned to mud, the easing of the cold weather seemed to many to offer a new hope for the people of the Soviet Union. With his main plans now in motion, Trotsky was able to consider his true agenda - the expansion of the workers state through any means. Turning to his comrades in the party, he beckoned them close and listened to their advice...

Let's see... ministers...
(a) Kalinin, Orlov, Alsknis, Berzin - possible.
(b) Litvinov - possible, though maybe Chicherin would an alternate.
(c) Kaganovich - unlikely, maybe Ordzhonikidze? And why hasn't Paradox changed it Lazar yet? Lazer is a sci-fi name! :)
(d) Yagoda - don't know, but maybe Gamarnik?
(f) Tukhachevsky - possible, but keep in mind he had a rivalry with Trotsky as well.
(g) Voroshilov - unlikely.

In any event we will continue reading the AAR. Interesting premise.
:D

:D

Yeah - I got a little lazy editing in other ministers, but as I stated, that may (will?) change over time as Trotsky attempts to gain complete control over the party. After all, Stalin is on the loose again, and who knows what plots may arise as people try to bring him back to power. If they fail, what price would any co-conspirators pay?

Clearly ministers and leaders like Voroshilov, Molotov, Mekhlis and Budenny may be some examples of Stalin's croneys who may or may not adapt to the new regime. There are plenty of salt mines in the borders of the workers state to send them to if they prove disloyal. :D

Anyways, glad to see some people following this. I think perhaps I've gone a little 'pic' heavy so far, but I'll experiment more as the game goes on and more action comes into it. (It's hard to get excited about accepting a spanish trade deal ya know?) :p

I like the format you've been using... the Proletariate needs Pix!... Pix and Vodka...

August 1936 arrived after a flurry of actions on the international scene. Everywhere, fascists and reactionaries of all colours have been emboldened by the growing power of Nazi germany. Italy's war against the heroic peoples of Ethiopia finally ground to a bloody end as Mussolini's forces seized the capital Addis Abbaba.

ethiopia6fv.png

In the far east however, the uneasy peace between the assorted Chinese warlords finally ended as a clique of petty bandits sought to take advantage of the internal problems faced by Chiang Kai Sheks forces. The infighting amongst the Chinese has even allegedly made several leading Bolsheviks comment on the lack of trust in this asian state.

Elsewhere several European nations went to the polls in the facade of democracy the capitalists require to maintain their stranglehold on the workers. French workers vented their frustration with the centre-right coalition, and brought in a more left talking government. With time they may realise that the social-democrats are not the answer, and that only the revolutionary will of the proletariat will bring freedom.

frenchlefties8hs.png

The new tax on baguettes and particularly of gallettes of the prior government is argued by many to have brought about it's downfall, with a massive swing against the government reported in Brittany in particular.

Meanwhile more decisive action was taken on the home front as security concerns grew over the increased action of counter-revolutionary agents.

enemyspies5fc.png

The provocations of the capitalist states continues to cause anger in Moscow.

antispy2jp.png

Trotsky was remorseless in his attacks on the enemy spies caught in a massive security crackdown.

trotskyRA.JPG

Comrade Trotsky seen here addressing troops prior to the crackdown on enemy agents. The success of this action prompted some to ask how the security services had failed so completely to locate the renegade stalin.

In a shocking development the recently elected Spanish popular front government showed itself unable to cope with the widespread revolutionary zeal of the populace. However as hamstrung as it was in trying to rein back the assorted stalinist, anarchist, and genuine communist groups. With its hesitency shown so clearly, church and military leaders led by Franco staged a well orchestrated coup.

spainwar4pw.png

With the rapid rise to prominence of several revolutionary groups and movements, the Soviet government, ably represented by the Comintern, procured large amounts of material and sent it directly to organisations such as the POUM, and CNT. Observors wondered what conditions were attached as this material went to decidely anarchist movements. Thoughts went back to the way Trotsky had decisively handled similar groups such as the bandit-anarchist Makno during the civil war.

sovietarmour5qv.png

Soviet volunteer forces equipped with BT-5 tanks shown here holding the key Republican city of Valencia. The same forces shortly saw action on the Zarragoza front, winning a number of encounters with similar volunteer forces committed by the Italian and German governments.

Whilst the western nations in essence sided with the nationalists by denying the legitimate Republican government any aid, many workers saw this as a chance to strike back at fascists directly.

tom-mann-centuria.jpg

Seen here are English, Australian, and New Zealand volunteers for a heroic anti-fascist brigade. Their unit saw action in the capture of Seville, which brought the entire south west under Communist and Anarchist control.

After the early and decisive battles in the streets of Madrid and Seville, the spanish battle lines were drawn. Loyalist forces were scattered in Madrid, and a rein of terror commenced against workers districts. However after the first weeks, the tenous nationalist hold on Seville and the region around Gibralter was seized.

Meanwhile in the Soviet Union itself, the fruits of increasing stability began to be felt as scientists, freed from the constraints of outdated technicians began to develop new technologies, methods, and machines, to aid the growing Soviet economy.

Seen here is a new industrial plant build in the lower Don region. The application of the new scientific discoveries made here increased Soviet industrial output considerably.

Interesting balance of story and game data. Soviet Union has like 2 billion things to do constantly but this AAR doesnt force the reader to suffer because of it. Nice work!

Great update. Though you did kill a Canadian spy. You'll pay for that in 1945 !!! ;)

Bring freedom and socialism to all corners of the Earth!

It was with some hesitation that party aide Raskolnikov read through the reports on the conflagration that was already being named 'the Spanish civil war' in the bourgeouis press. His own orders had helped set in motion the massive supply and material shipments to the Spanish government that was increasingly being isolated by the western 'democratic' states.

TGSE00863_m.jpg

A British newspaper displaying anti-worker propoganda is shown in this proletarian district of Glasgow. British, French, and American industry magnates cut legitimate aid to the increasingly left-talking Azana and provided massive oil shipments to criminal fascistic-clerical conspirators.

Looking over the balance sheets, Raskolnikov located the one Comrade Trotsky had sought, displaying the carefully negotiated shipments of materials crucial to the foundering Republican economy. While not without their cost to the gold reserves of the spanish government, the materials sent had allowed the republicans to continue to resist the enemy, who themselves had lavish supply from the German and Italian governments.

homenaje_poster.jpg

The Republican war effort saw a short but dramatic surge in artistic freedom as all those concerned in combatting the nationalists 'death to intelligence' mentality pooled their efforts into producing propoganda for the libertarian, anarchist, and communist struggle.

Finally, locating the report, a summary was able tabled for Trotsky to present to the assembled party members.

tradespain1ka.png

These important trades were documented openly by Trotsky in his address to the international media syndicates 'Why we provide limited support to the Spanish workers'.

After completing his duties, it was Raskolnikov's turn to provide the crucial intelligence information regarding the whereabouts of the renegade Stalin. His own new position as deputy chief of the Inostrannyi Otdel - a department of the NKVD. His own agents had aided in tracking down Stalins movements since his escape, and the information led to one clear conclusion - Stalin had fled the country - his current location - afganistan. With yet another reactionary religious state providing shelter for the enemies of the workers, Trotsky labled afganistan part of an 'axis of reaction' together with several other states including nationalist Spain, Germany and Italy.

mujahideen.gif

Reactionary islamic mujahadeen fighters provided shelter and protection for Stalin in return for large sums of money.

Meanwhile in spain itself, there was great concern regarding the performance of the Republican forces as anarchist forces retreated in the face of fascist attacks on Tarragon and Barcelona. The latter fell in an orgy of destruction, whilst Soviet commissars were urgently rushed to the front to provide the steel and courage to hold the front.

poumretreat1wg.png

POUM militia forces retreat in panic on the Tarragona front.

Of equal concern to the Soviet Union was the retaining of assorted conservatives in key positions of the spanish government. The failure of the Republicans to endorse independence for the peoples of Tangiers led to the swift fall of all government forces and towns in this region, and enabled Franco to rush his Army of Africa to the bolster nationalist positions near Burgos.

tangiers0dg.png

Nationalist forces marched through Tangiers, crushing all resistance brutally.

Given the Nationalist pushes in both Tangiers and near Barcelona, the Republicans were able to mount an offensive against Madrid in October. Massive air bombardments carried out by Tupolev bombers armed with heroic Soviet volunteers provided the government forces with unprecedented support. After weeks of battle involving the Italian Littorio division, and the Condor Legion, the dust settled to allow Republican forces access to the shattered city.

madridbomb9au.png

Republican bombers smashed the transport networks used by the Nationalists, cutting their supply routes into and out of the city.

madridbombresults2rf.png

Shown here are more exact results of the damage done to the road and rail networks the fascists used to try and hold the city.

At the start of November, it was therefore with renewed hope that the supreme body of the Soviet Union was able to consider the increasingly revolutionary situation in Spain. The denial of aid to the Republicans by western states had given the Soviets massive prestige and power in providing this aid themselves.

spainnov2gq.png

The overall situation in Spain in early November 1936.

Meanwhile in Asia, the infighting between the Chinese bandit-warlords eventually ceased as Chiang was able to crush the southern revolt. Why he did not continue his campaign and instead accepted peace was unclear to soviet observors.

chinaminorwar9ai.png

In the Soviet Union itself the steady development of new industrial plants, machine shops, and factorys continued unabated. Whilst it's international focus was on the developments in Spain, the USSR did secretly begin construction of a new series of battleships. Quite why this mighty nation, for so long the home of a strong army and weak navy has chosen this path to develop was beyond many comrades comprehension.
