Chapter 1 The Reign of King Henry V (1413-1422)

The thick mossy stone walls of the massive fortress did nothing to mask the steady drumming sound of the lashing rain outside. The oily lamps flickering merrily in ornate scones also did nothing to warm the chill of the castle, nor of the mood of the five nobles pacing restlessly in the small, well-lit room. These five nobles, more than perhaps anyone in the realm of England, had the power to change the fate of this island nation. The tall lanky man who had been sitting in a intricately carved wooden chair behind an impsoing wooden desk, rose and after taking a hearty sip from a goblet, spoke with a calm voice "My friends I have gathered you in my castle today to speak of the future of our nation. As you know, since King Henry V left for Caux,to take command of the Royal Army, he appointed me Regent in his place" The other men in the room nodded and gestured for him to go on "I am proposing two things. First I propose that we change our Domestic Policy to become more centralized. The second thing, makes my heart heavy. I propose that we coutinue the war with France" "And risk the deaths of more of our boys!?" demanded a short, stocky man who was the only noble dressed in regal robes. "Not to mention those damned Scots. Every day they mass more and more troops along our northern border. General Gloucester is a brillant general to be sure, but even he has expressed his lack of confidence in being able to keep the Scots at bay" There was a low murmuring of agreement. The Regent nooded his agreement " While I agree with Count Moore here, I feel as does King Henry that the time to reassert our rightful claim to the throne of France has never been better". He drew his jeweled dagger and walked over to the large oil painting covering one wall. He gestured with his dagger at the map that represented France "Look here. We have 31,000 troops led by our King stationed in Caux and our Guyenne Detachment led by the brillant Field Judge Bedford in Poitou. All that stands in our way in the north between us and Paris is 16,000 French troops. In the South 4,000 troops. France in on the brink of collapse, you know that. Burgundy are our allies, they can hold down the eastern flank for us. Scotland can be negotiated with." There were general nods around the room and even Count Moore of Salisbury had to nod at the logic of the Regent's statement. The Rents spoke again. "Well Baron Miller what do you have to say abut this?" All eyes turned to a young fair-haired man slouched in a corner. Baron Sean Miller, King Henry's childhood friend and a veteren of the Battle of Agincourt, stood and nodded. "Yes I concur with the Regents plan" He walked to the map "Order the Invasion Army into Picardie and order the Guyenne Detachment into Guyenne. I would also advise moving the March Garrison to Northumberland to counter the Scottish threat." The men in the room nooded sagely at Baron Miller's advice, as even despite his youth he was King Henry's most trusted advisor. "Okay considor it done" the Regent spoke "Excuse me sir" spoke a timid voice from the corner of the room All eyes swung around to reveal a small mousy man who was King Henry's Chief of Internal Affairs "What shall we do about the Lollard Heresy?" This time it was Baron Miller who spoke first "Let them Be. Our relation will drop with Bourbonnais, the newly independent country of Orleans, the Papal States, Brittany, Burgundy and France, but I wouldn't want to risk having our country's stability drop" Again the men nooded and the mousy man nooded and withdrew to relay this news to a servant. "Okay" spoke the Regent "It's settled then. We move on France" As the men filed out of the room the Regent spoke to Baron Miller in a soft voice "Brillant strategy Baron Miller. I can see why the King trusts your advice so. You truly are a brillant man" "No" replied Baron Miller in a haunted voice "A brillant man woould chose not to fight"

As lightening crackled overhead in a sky as black as the bottom of a cauldron, the nobles of England, their face tense with stress and overburden argued passionately. Perhaps when they have raised their flag above the Tower of London, you will start to take them more seriously!" However the French, perhaps buoyed from the sucesses of Scotland has not been receptive to our peace demands. We have told them time and time again, that nothing less than Picardie and Guyenne will be acceptable to us. They have even refused to cede to us Picardie by itself. Our siege of Paris cost us many men and that gave the French an easy victory at the Last Stand at the Bastille. However we are running out of money. Brittany has cancelled their vassalization they had with us and if they sense we are weakening, they may align themselves with France. Burgundy has bowed out of the war. We can only thank the Swiss for starting a piddly little alliance war with Bourbonnais to suck in French troops that would normally go toward defeating us. Our troops are weakening and we cannot spare any more men. Whatever troops we can afford to call up must go to Northumberland and Lancastershire. However, we need to dictate peace on our own terms. Too much has been lost to do otherwise. Also I strongly suspect France had something to do with the assassination last year of Duke Lambert. We must settle for nothing less than two provinces." the Baronet hestitated before going on "I received a letter from King Henry several weeks ago. It seems that during the siege of Amiens, he was struck by a poisoned arrow. He isn't well my friends, and will probably die before the year is out. His sucessor is a child of six months. We need to expel the Scottish from our realm and make peace with France before then. I have a horrible feeling that we must capitulate to the Scottish demands and cede Northeumberland to them" "NEVER!" the newest member to the council of five, as the collection of nobles were commonly called. The towering Arnold Duke of Cardiff bellowed "We Will never surrender to those Scots. My brother fought and was killed in the Massacre at Newcastle and my great-grandfather was killed iin the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. England will never bow to those savages!" The Regent raised his hand and a still enraged Arnold, his face livid and his eyes pools of molten black hatred sat down "I'm afraid the Baronet is right" "You trust this man who urged us to hold out this long against the Scots. King Henry had so little faith in him, he demoted him" Count Moore objected "That will be enough!" The Regent said firmly "I think we have all been blinded by our pereceptions of the Scots as backwards fools. No longer, we must make peace with them.

Now I realize that so far I haven't exactly been kicking ass but just you wait, that will come
Currently I have 14 Victory Points and I'm in 19th place. First is the Timurid Empire I think with 80ish. I've only had one revolt in Anglica and that was dealt with easily. My stability is at +2 and my treasury is empty (8 ducats) I'm losing 0.7 ducats a month and have a yearly income of 40ish I think. Now for the embarassing Scottish situation. I thought because I had a superior army and a leader, I could hold back the Scots but alas, no. At the Massacre of Newcastle my army was destroyed, as were my follow-on armies. Scotland currently has Northumberland and Meath in their control and has Lancastershire under siege. I've been hoping for a quick end to the war with France so I held out on the Scottish peace demands, but I think that if I continue to be stubborn, Scotland will take more of my provinces. In France, I'm kicking ass (sort of) My siege of Paris failed, but I hold Picardie, Guyenne and Languedoc. My original objectives was the province of Picardie, but the French have refused to cede it to me. Same goes with the other two provinces. The Frenchies are being very stubborn and I think if they should chose to go on the offensive, I'm well, fucked for the lack of a better word. Now in the world, some interesting things are happening. Denmark has emerged as the clear victor thus far, inheriting Norway from hose damned Norweigan fools and annexing Bremen and Holstein. Another victory is the mighty country of Ragusa who defeated the Venetian imperalists and got 203 ducats out of them for a peace deal. The Teutonic Order has annexed Pskov, no suprise and both Oldenburg and Brandenburg have been busy annexing Hannover and Madgeburg respectively. The Ottoman Empire has won round one with Byzantium, getting Morea from them and against all odds Algiers coaxed 50 ducats from Castille. The war with Grenada between Castille and Aragon I think is still going on. Austria and The Palatinet have also stretched their legs, annexing Mantua and Mainz recesptively. In bad and good developments Brittany has won 75 ducats from France, and Bourbonnais has started to assert themselves as a possible power in France by taking the province of Piedmont from Savoy. Also Brittany cancelled vassalizations with us, wwhich I never noticed, I didn't even know that Brittany WAS a vassal of mine. Also Sweden cancelled their vassalization with Denmark. The big story thpugh has to be Denmark annexing three provinces and asserting themselves as the biggest power in Scandavia. Runner up is Bourbonnais with their improbable victory over Savoy and Honorable Mention goes to Ragusa in fighting off those damned Venetians
Not much action (actually none) in terms of merchants or diplomatic actions. I need peace with Scotland and I now prepared to cede Northumberland to them

Excellent, excellent. ... as the ambassador of Sweden I offer the full support of my king and country. Though we do have difficulties of our own, ofcourse with Denmark. For we are vassals no more! I would offer you an alliance in our Kings name, however we are far too weak and lack the finances for war. Hm, perhaps in the future. Good luck Sir!
