armynames & navynames for EU2

Hi all. Can either Demetrios Havard or other Betazoids please bring this up to the rest of the beta forum?

I am working on a couple projects for EU2. One of them may end up being an alternative history type scenario (in the spirit of Old IGC where you have strong post-1453 Byzantium and Italy unification etc).

However, much of my accumulating data is very useful for anyone, in fact anyone doing scenarios can take advantage of my database! Even Paradox may find this very useful.

Enough talk, let me show you a tiny sample below of the "goods" I've got:

Suleyman's additions to armynames.csv (this is a tiny sample of what I have already) ---

ZAN;Swahili Army

LAP;Ejercito del Norte
LAP;Ejercito de la Plata
LAP;Ejercito de los Andes

POL;Hetman's 2nd Ducal Army
POL;3rd Polish Army
POL;4th Polish Army
POL;5th Polish Army
POL;Pospolite Ruszenie
POL;Kozacy Rejestrowi

of course, the above is only a tiny sample. I have lots more already in armynames navynames, leadernames, military leaders, and also now learning to script events.

if this is useful to anyone, please let me know. otherwise, I would just save my efforts for my own IGC projects...

if you think you have better suggestions for the names lists, then don't hesitate to tell me!

I think that Dahomey needs an army name commemorating its famous all-female royal guard. But I can't think of a good-sounding name for it. "Female Guard" or "Women's Guard" sound like a group guarding the women of the royal house, not a guard made up of females...

"Royal Women's Regiment" maybe?

I will add them ASAP! thanks. by the way, according to the Shogun game, Nodachi is spelled no-dachi, I think. and Yari... those are elite spearmen regiments IIRC. right?

They really weren't matriarchal, it was just that the military was open to women, and the elite all-female royal guard was considered to be the toughest regiment of them all. It's just one of those wonderful quicks that makes history so fascinating...

Cool. Did they ever see battle?

Maybe we should call them the "Spice Girls"? "Ebony Girls"? Wait, I´ve got it - "The Supremes".

As far as "matriarchates" go I think that the Iroquis comes the closest to qualify.

All the time. They were the royal bodyguard and when ever the king went into battle, so did they (and remember, this was back in the time when kings and generals actually were in the midst of combat during battle, not sitting back and commanding from afar). They were the most feared and toughest regiment in Dahomey's army.

These are Zulu regimental names from the Anglo-Zulu War, so a bit out of period. Each is an ‘ibutho’, so should properly be called, for examaple, the iNdabakawombe ibutho, but that would take up rather a lot of space:

iNdabakawombe (Royal bodyguard)
iNdluyengwe
iNgobamakhosi
iSangqu
uDududu
uKhandempemvu
uMbonambi
uMcijo
uMxapho
uNokhenke
uThulwana

thanks Sir James I can use names from actual regiments even if these names were not used until some 40-50 years later.

Do you know which regiments are Impi and which ones are not?

my understanding is that Shaka created the Impi as a sort of "elite light infantry" in regiments... which then leads me to assume that not every single Zulu unit was an Impi.

Impi is the word for 'army' - I've never seen a reference to an individually named impi (I doubt if there were often circumstances where more than one was formed at a given time).

Ibutho is, roughly, 'regiment' (plural amabutho). They were made up of men of a specific age, but drawn from a wide area, so avoiding regional loyalties.

In terms of EU, a fledgling Zulu nation might only have one main army - "kwaZulu Impi" from your list would be a suitable name. As more armies appear, the ibutho names could be used - they would lend local flavour, if not historical accuracy, but then a Zulu nation with multiple armies is alternative history already.

As an EU Zulu nation gained provinces, "province-name Impi" would be suitable, but a bit boring

Really looks good, but 2 questions. First one is elementary. What nation has the LAP tag? And making the names for Polish armies you wrote some in Polsih others in English, I think all of the should be in Polish so it would be as follows:

POL: Pierwsza Armia Koronna
POL: Druga Armia Koronna
POL: Pierwsza Armia Polna
POL: Druga Armia Polna
POL: Trzecia Armia Polska
POL: Czwarta Armia Polska
POL: Pi¹ta Armia Polska

LAP = la plata (spanish argentina)

I wrote in english because someone told me about how PL named some armies after 4 hetman armies, 2 for duchy and 2 for crown. but he never told me what its translation in polish. so I left it in english

I will be happy to use your translations. However, your last one is garbled. Are you using non-ASCII text?

it looks like this: Pi¹ta Armia Polska (for 5th army)

thanks for the info!
