I began my game as Japan by focusing on my economy. I researched relatively little in my first year, and I had to make many trade deals to get enough raw materials to produce things. Here's a look at my economy in 1936:

By March 1938, I've made considerable progress, but my supply lines are starting to strain. My Transport Capacity is almost all used up.

A question about TC, by the way. I understand all the costs outlined in the box on p. 62 of the manual except the fuel/supply costs. It says 1 TC per fuel and per supply "shipped." Does that mean shipped via convoy? Over land? Basically, does every unit that uses one supply cost me one TC?

Anyway, here's the situation in March 38:

Even with Shanghai and Nanjing in hand, I reach my TC limit shortly thereafter. I veer west to try to capture the industry in the center of the country. I see no industry south of Nanjing other than Canton, in the far south. I figure I'll go west first. I'm still not sure if that was a mistake.

Germany invades Poland in September 1939, and it's all over within six weeks. Germany and the Soviets slice up Poland in accordance with the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact.

In the meantime, I have made it to the gates of Chungking. In fact, I've just won the battle for Chungking and am preparing to occupy the city:

At that very moment, the Chinese Nationalist Ambassador comes calling. His offer, reproduced below, is where I've stopped the game so that I can sleep. So should I take it? Note that he's not offering Chungking.

I'm pretty sure I'll say no, with a view to making Nationalist China a puppet or perhaps annexing it. I'm just not sure what the arguments each way are. If I accept the offer, will all my TC problems go away? Most of China will no longer be "non-national provinces", right? On the other hand, if I reject the offer, I can either get a puppet (which means steady income and again no TC drain) or annexation (which I assume means no TC drain at all). So what should be my goal: peace now; puppet; or annexation? I'm thinking annexation.

I await your advice, Cabinet members.

minor weak idea :p

You could always accept the deal as it stands, nothing wrong with taking a small breather, regain some strenght then canceling the alliance before restarting a full charge on em by redeclaring war  Lets just say that they outbid your leader on a music group he wanted to perform :D

First, let me say you inspired me to play as japan in my next game.

Now, about that peace offer. remember that you'll only get 20% of the IC and resources in conquered provinces, so it doesn't matter if you take the peace offer or not, as the only thing you'll get is a whiny puppet... however TC shortage is a killer :( .

the best thing to do maybe is wait untill you get Indochina from vichy and then go for the southern resource area :D

Also, incest in convoy and escorts, as you'll need to ship all the resources home, maybe build some more Industry, your IC doesn't look good... Coming from me, who is playing an overextended USA :D

I humbly advise we accept the offer my lord. Why?

1) We need to consolidate the gains we have made. Our supply network has reached its limit, and requires time to recover.

2) We have captured rich areas of China, which will fuel our industries for years to come. The portion that remains to China may not be worth the burden conquest would require.

3) While our soldiers are unmatched in endurance throughout the world, it is prudent to allow them rest - rest before more conquests awaiting them.

4) With war starting in Europe, there may be opportunities to grab territories from Western Imperials while they are distracted. We need to have our soldiers ready to take their rich colonies.

5) Peace will lull our future enemies into complacency. News of war angers the hearts of westerners. Let their eyes only look to Europe, then we can strike again.

IF you can, I would go for annexation. If your TC is really that overstretched, then I would accept the offer as it stands. Whatever you do, do not puppet. Things go very wrong if you puppet Nat. China, at least that is what I gather.

Peace is good. You get some time to lick some wounds and possibly go spank them chinese again later in the game.

Annexing and then releasing China as a puppet can also be an idea. The chinese will provide some spare troops, modern ones however.

The goal of annexation ought to be considered twice before going for it. Potential enemies just love to get at you when you're bogged down somewhere far away.

Just puppeting is just silly. :)
