NB: Not a proper mod yet! Some assembly required.

I notice a lot of people have wanted a byzantine mod, and in my own search all I've come up with are threads requesting one and nothing being done about it. I've just finished playing through a game of my own as the Byzantine Empire and have scripted a whole bunch of custom events, as well as using Green Beret's events that he posted in his Byzantine AAR to start me off (with some of my own modifications). I don't have the experience or ability to be able to turn it into an official mod, so I thought I would just put my events up for grabs and either let people piece it together themselves, or let someone turn into into a mod that everyone can use.

With all these I was using Dark Renown's All in One Mod and the latest 1.03c beta patch. Also, please note that these events were all written on the fly, some were circumstancial (i.e. the trigger is just a date, so will need fixing), and some I made just so things would go the way I wanted them to. These events are far from balanced, and probably have way too many positives and not enough negatives (but that's for you to decide. :) ) and some may be incomplete/not work correctly.

Adding the Byzantines and relations

Download byzantine.txt and place it in .../victoria/db/events

Download byz.zip; unzip it, rename byz.bmp to U00.bmp, make a copy of it and rename that to U00monarch.bmp; place in .../victoria/gfx/map/shields
Do the exact same with byz_flag.bmp, but put them in .../victoria/gfx/map/flags

Download BYZcommie.zip. Unzip; rename BYZcommie.bmp BYZcommie_flag.bmp to U00commie and place in their respective folders. Also, make four copies of each and rename them to: U09, U09monarch, U09commie and U09republic, placing them in their respective folders.

Download grebyzantine.zip. Unzip; rename grebyzantine.bmp and grebyzantine_flag.bmp to U00republic; place in respective folders.

Make copies of the four TUR flags and shields. Rename them all to U02.

Now...

You're set to go. You can play through it as I did if you don't want to edit it. Hope this helps, and I hope someone will make good use of my events and make a proper mod. Have fun!

Hey guys. I've been away for a while, just realised that people had shown some interest in my mod. I may take a look at fixing up all the errors, balancing it etc. and making it compatible with the latest version of VIP. All depends on how much time I get (working a lot at the moment); but I would like to do it and make it a proper mod. I'll need help making it an install, but I have to get the work done first, so we'll see how things go! :)
 
It depends which stage of the Empire you wanted to mod into Vicky. Byzantia at its Zenith or just before it downfall to the ottomans, or at the time of the first crusade, which is similar to the original map posted by Roman Acqui.

And yes I would be interested in your mod Xanthippus. :)

You need to be in the year 1840 or later, and you need to control Constantinople, that's all. :)

There already is one... if I remember correctly it comes as a standard flag. Or maybe it's only standard with VIP, not sure. Either way, it's available in the Victoria Flag Directory.

I did start working converting some things to VIP, but I've been run off my feet lately with my job and I had to sideline the project. I've not given it up though, might get there someday soon! :)
 
You say to make a copy of the commieflags for u09, but there is already a u09...some middle eastern nation. And another thing, I followed your steps, but I can't seem to get the event where the OE cedes Constantinople to you to fire...can anyone else? I tried firing it with the console, but it was no use. Whats the deal here?

This is a really nice job! But the far more intresting thing is the events you made. even the ones you don't use. They give some great ideas!
 
So, are you saying you actually got it to work? I even tried downloading the patches and the all in one mod, but still it isn't working... *sigh*


Edit: Hrm, interesting. I managed to get the first event to fire just now but putting all of the events in the byzantine.txt into the Greece.txt. Though I did the first step as you instructed, it still did not recognize the file...odd.

Edit2: Heh, when the Byzantium reborn event triggered, all my provinces went black, and I became the Piritani Republic. ;) What the hell is up with that one? lol I did fix their files by the way.

I guess you played this mod in VIP? Because in VIP U00 is for Piratini while in vanilla it is free tag used for Byzantium ;)
 
Can't get it to work...

Hi, I'm an evil Mac user running OSX 10.4 and can't get this SOB to work. Followed all the instructions, installed VIP 0.4b, currently at 1.03c3 (Mac users will get me).

I can select my country, get that far, boot it, but when I try to get past that, it crashes as the meter nearly fills up and is about to go to the gameplay map.

Specs:
2048 RAM
Dual 2.5 ghz at 1ghz fsb
256 Radeon 9800pro

Anyway, I tried both replacing the previous u00, u02, and u09 strings, and adding them. Sadly, to no effect.

Any advice on what I could be missing?

Okay, so I tried to edit it in vanilla. Unfortunately, when I added the strings and replaced the userdefined country strings in World_names, I couldn't even get it to the country selection screen: it froze during loading. Well, I alleviated that by eliminating Sudan from the list (world_names, country.csv, and the rebellion.txt), given that it had no graphics. After that, I could get to country selection, but when it crapped out at the very end during the last loadtime before the game map.

--Part 3--

Well, I managed to get the damn thing to run by specifically editting each aspect in the VIP. This thing just plain doesn't work in vanilla. Well, I had to run it in VIP mode, then, of course in order for it to function. Now, for the life of me, I can't get the Byzantine events to trigger. I tried dumping the Byzantine events into Greece.txt AND ottomans.txt, but to no avail. Well, turns out that was my mistake in the first place for not realizing that, of course, the VIP events are in a different folder. So I figure to put the necessary string where it belongs...now it I'm back to step one in getting it to boot. *sigh*

you know you could probably just take greece and give it events like moving its capital to constantiople. Having an empire called "byzantine" in the 1800s is completely unrealistic.

The word byzantine was created by a french historian and is ment to degrade the country. If it were to live to the 1800s it would be called the Greek Empire as thats what everyone in the west called them in the medieval era.
 
The Byzantine Empire was the surviving remnants of the Eastern Roman Empire and at its peak covered much of the Balkans, Greece, Asia Minor the middle east and egypt. Imagine, the Ottoman Empire in Victoria but in pretty Greek blue :)
