Inspired by WiF?

I'm curious to know - it has long been rumored that HOI was originally (and loosely?) inspired by WiF, the boardgame. Is this true? I have been a WiF'er for a long time, and was just curious ...

This might be something worth playing, while waiting for HoI 2...

But Matrix games is serious company, I'm pretty sure that will be good game.

from what I know, all the designers knew and have played WiF. however hardly anything from this game went into HoI... personally, I can find no resemblance of it.

the computer (beta) version of wif is imho not playable, mainly coz of interface probs. but it´s just a beta, so we shouldn´t judge it on this (I have it still somewhere on my computer).

I'd buy that game except...

1) It's like $50 around here.

2) The only person who'd play it with me would be my dad, and he's halfway around the world right now.

only 2 years i saw a website announce the WiF pc game back in 96 or 97...now 7 years later they say its going to happen, excuse my skepticism.

If they could do it like the board game but with better, simplified rules i would think i would think it could be as popular as HOI if not more...or am i just nostalgic..?

WIF is truly a great game, and I see plenty of similarities echoed in HOI.

Like others, I've played the WIF beta, and it ain't pretty...

Still, if they ever make something decent of it, I'll snap it up nice and quick - same as HOI2

Probably the best thing about WIF was its method of production. Having gearing limits to each of unit types. Every two months you could only increase your inf type production by one corps, for example. It would be nice not to get swamped by 30 divisions all coming out at once(HOI).

WIF was originally " inspired" or knocked off, from Third Reich by Avalon Hill. A great boardgame that was too before its time to be done right on pc, so that version sucks.

Axis and Allies inspiring HOI? Wouldn't that be like saying 'the galley inspired the dreadnaught? Axis and Allies is a great tabletop game, more so when combined with Xeno games '39 expansion. But still, if you want A&A to be considered inspiration, maybe we should go back to RISK for inspiration as well. Better yet, ask the designer's of HOI what inspired them.

I was saying that HOI had way more in common with A&A then with WIF.

Actually, if you tech rush, your build strategies will be similar to those for A&A;
ie. Subs, aircraft, and inf for Japan, Ships and aircraft for UK, Inf for USSR, tanks and inf for Germany, and everything for USA
