How to get rid of pirates? (plus cool pirate joke inside!!)

Too many damn pirates in the carribian!
I have a fleet of about 35 ships constantly patrolling the seas there and killing all pirates I find. It seems like as soon as they finish thier patrol all the pirates are back. They come quicker then I can kill them. There are even pirates in the actic North of Canada!

Its almost more trouble then its worth, killing them all. Is there a better solution? Should I forget about them?

To answer your question you can either....

Keep patroling because pirates affect the CoT value for which they are sailing close to , or provinces of said CoT.

..or...

Edit them out of the game entirely.....not what I recommened though.

-------your joke---------

Don't ever use as a pick up line.

You can't eradicate the Pirates. They will be coming back. Just ignore them and take the loss. In many cases another nation's fleet will take care of them for you. If you fight them, you will lose ships.

I strongly suspect the cost of rebuilding and maintaining ships to fight the pirates is higher than the loss of income.

One interesting point, though. I've noticed pirates don't affect the trade of all provinces bordering the sea they control. Only one is affected, I think. I have learned to colonise just those provinces which are never affected by Pirates.

Building higher level forts makes pirates less likely to show up and I've found that provinces with higher level forts won't be affected by the pirates while others bordering the same sea zone will.

Well that many pirates is somewhat historical. Throughout history, sailors flocked to the seas to make an easy buck. Naturally, pirates would abound far from Europe with easy pickings to be had.

I always like how early in some games if I check the VP leader board the pirates are usually in 2nd or 3rd place...

Pirates are way too annoying. First of all, as stated, getting rid of them is a full time job, and you never really get rid of them. Second of all, they generally seem to be one step ahead of everyone in naval tech (totally ahistorical, I am afraid). Both AI fleets, as well as my own, are constantly getting whooped, even with superior numbers.

One thing that really should be changed... Pirates never, ever, in the history of the world, completely shut down trade in a region. Sorry, but a fleet of pirate ships should reduce the trade production of nearby provinces, they should NOT completely eradicate it.

On the other hand, when I go to war and I have a string of vulnerable trading posts and colonies along the North American coast, it sure is nice to have a belt of pirate fleets "protecting" my coastline.

Yes, you should forget about them. Every time you kill a pirate fleet a new pirate fleet will appear in the same region - quite often in the same province - sometimes within two days of you killing the old fleet. If you just ignore the first few fleets to turn up, new ones won't appear. Either way, no matter what you do there will always be the same number of pirate fleets about.

Agreed. Hunting pirates is a waste of time and money. Let the AI fleets do it if they want to.

New pirates will pop up if you do not eradicate those already in existence. I tended to use large 50 ship fleets to hunt them down.

Pirates dissappear after 1720, so if you can survive that long...

But is it worth the effort and cost of building and maintaining those fleets? It seems to me that pirates don't really affect your income that much, but it's only a gut feeling.

EoE

Fellow EU'ers,

That's been my experience as well. Nowadays I just completely ignore them and just suffer the occasional loss when I forget they are afoot. It's too much trouble to deal with them on a never-ending basis when there's so many other things to do in the game.

Yeah i notice that too. How does that happen?? That early in the game, there can't be that many battles for them to win, so what are they collecting points from??

The pirates get all their points from taking terra incognito provinces - which are easy to take. That is why they have good points early on. But later when they have taken all of the TI provinces there is nothing left but sea battles so they lose out in the end.

Do you mean the pirates discover TI areas? If so why can't you steal their maps?

Guess you've never read or seen "Treasure Island"?
Pirates tend to get very, very upset if you steal their maps. Especially the ones with a large X

You can't steal pirate maps - but you are allowed to trade maps with them.

Eh? And how do you do that? When I access the diplomacy screen I have a hard time finding the secret pirate cove on the world map. Especially if it's in Terra Incognita.
