Improving the mesoamerican region

First of all, congratulation for the MM team, this mod is amazing and I've had a blast playing it. It gives life and deep to an already deep game, I've been trying different nations and cultural areas, and playing HRE, Japan, etc is pretty fun and different each time.

However I think an area that has been left out gameplay wise is mesoamerica, its really dull as it is now (and historically innacurate) and besides the Mexico conquest event chain (wich is pretty cool BTW) there's not much to do there.

So being the prehispanic history nut that I am, I'd like to propose some suggestions to improve this part of the game for both the Spanish conqueror player and the mesoamerican player.

The conquest of Mexico didnt end with the conquest of the Aztecs by Hernan Cortez, it would took centuries to subjugate and convert the natives of present day Mexico. Some were conquered through force, and some by good diplomacy, and Spain had to suffer rebelions.

Im working on a map proposal to improve the mesoamerican nations and regions, I know nothing about modding, but I like prehispanic history, and this particular area could add a different feeling and gameplay to the game, just like other already do.

Anyway, my proposed mesoamerican list of nations (divided in culture):


Mesoamerican

-The Triple Alliance
-Tlaxcala
-Pureepecha
-Mixtecs
-Zapotecs
-Mayans
-Totonacs
-Otomitl

Chichimecas

-Guachiles
-Caxcanes
-Zacatecans
-Huichol

This are roughly the groups the Spanish encountered, historically the Spanish were bent on conquest before colonization, so if the Spanish player wants to conquer the whole Mexican territory it will have to take the time to do it and deal with war, diplomacy, and convertion with the many peoples that lived there.

The Spanish player should be able to choose how to aproach this, either direct conquest, or use diplomacy to vassalize and convert for latter annexion.

There are many examples of this and could be done by event chain giving interesting results:

-After the conquest of the Mexica by Hernan Cortez, Spanish conquistador Cristóbal de Olid was sent west, into Michoacan, the Pureepecha King Tangaxoán II submited pacefuly to Spanish rule and converted to Catholicism(until here it all goes nice). However Nuño de Guzmán was sent to explore western Mexico, he accused Tangaxoán II of not really converting to Catholicism, and hiding tribute from Spain, and so he proceded to torture him and slay him causing an armed rebellion against Spanish rule.

After that the region was devasted and the Spanish crown sent bishop Vasco de Quiroga to restore order in Michoacan.

This is the kind of thing that happens in a usual MM2 game, and there are many more examples of this throughout Spanish conquest of Mexico that I think would add a whole level of complexity to the area and make it a nice change of pace for a colonization game.


Anyway, I'm working on a map with more historically accurate regions for Mexico (I'll upload it when I finish it), as the political divisions of ancient Mexico were not those of modern Mexico.

Perhaps you have more ideas to how to improve mesoamerica, its a really intereting area that has lots of potential, and could add even more to MM2 conquering Mesoamerica as either Spanish or native should be something fun to do.

Try looking at the latest version of WWM. The area got a nice overhaul recently.

Terra Nova mod has a overhauled Mesoamerica. new provinces and tribes and events. I plan on adding a custom religion for the area also eventualy. feel free to use content as long as you mention the mod or maybe you could help us improve tharea in the mod.
