Are we going to give up?
My dear fellow american's, today you can see my face in the election board, again, and i won't surrender till i get the USA back to it's best days, now, we can see that America is suffering the Great Depression, but have the people forgot the American spirit of resistance, our proper anthem says it all, you can't surrender. My dear brothers, we can't leave USA to die after all this improvement, advance and wealth, after all the sweat , from the cold days of the Independence War to the Great War, our armies standed still firm and proud of protecting it's country, from the economic turnout to the Great Depression, our economy stayed and confronted all crisis, now, i ask you men and women, will you let this so called Depression to beat you, after all the tire to make this the land of liberty and opportunity, if you unite white me, we sure can.
-William Horshington, Republican Pretender

((Avindian I am no longer Governor :p of Louisiana.))

It would be my greatest honor to be your chosen as your VP, and I do except your offer.

- C. Blancharde

I'm fine remaining a general... is Mandrake still around to be Sec. of Defence (since he is the natural choice for that position)? And, to be bold, I'll preemtively congratulate Mr. Ritter on winning the primaries, since his lead seems insurmountable.

After having fought Communism with the anti- Communist forces in the German Civil War, Jerry Nightmore has published a book in Britain called The Inevitable Second World War and the Rise of the American Empire. In the book the US comes under attack from the Nazi- Communist League of Nations, but stands triumphant in the end and decide to rule the whole World as it's rightful conquerors.

I see, but with this descision you have alienated the true left that brought you into your presidency. By exchanging a true Labor advocate for a capitalist and the heir to a wealthy dynasty, you have insulted the socialist voting bloc that helped put you in office. Which is why I will run an Independant Campaign to represent the true socialist movement.
((Harrison is BB's char. Right?))

Vice President Jenkins, I hope you will reconsider your run and ally yourself with the Progressives. We must not allow the Republicans to destroy all the progress we have made and have us regress back to the policies that allowed this depression to occur.

A Day that will soon be accomplished...

Congratulations to Mr. Nightmore on writing a book... my father is amazed that you could pick up a pencil, let alone write a book... well done, all the same.

(I somehow completely forgot about this forum for a while.)

I congratulate President Ryan on his election...

And now I express my deep sympathies in this crisis.

The banking act should never have been passed, it was a fuse which set off a bomb best meant to be carefully handed and diffused. Indeed, it is irrelevant now, we are in crisis. The private sector has no incentive to hire workers, there is no demand for their work. Money is not being invested into private enterprise, it is simply sitting in the pockets of our frightened citizens. There is no reason to believe the private sector will pick up soon enough to keep our consciences clear, and thus our only solution must be to empower the public sector to spend the money the private citizens wont.

But Socialism is not the answer.

I cast my vote for Horshington in the Republican primaries.

Thank for your support, Mr.Taggarman.
((for anywone wondering here is the actual state of the elections.))
Republicans
Simon Von Ritter: 3
William Horshington: 2

Well, I'm back from my 48-hour absence.

The Polls are Closed.

Patrick Ryan will be the Progressive Candidate.
Simon Von Ritter will be the Republican Candidate.
Leonard Jenkins will run as an Independent.

Mr. Ritter, your policies ASAP.

PS. I find it odd that Mr. Horshington, whose platform is state capitalism, finds support from people whose support comes from an opposition of socialism.

OOC: Not that odd, it was a lot of "fight the left with their own medicine" ideas around. But perhaps that's mostly Europe.

IC: Jerry Nightmore is rumored to be in Spain. He's said to be a special guest of some general on the Canary Islands.

((BBB, will you please stop odding me and saying things klike that, it kinda disturbs me ))
Congratulations, Mr. Ritter i guess you were the best republican!

Policies:

Economic: Free Trade and Laissez Faire. As I said when I first ran for the nomination, we need less regulation in order to allow our workers -- the best in the world -- to compete with the Europeans and other nations on our own terms.
Military: Pro-Military. I am in favor of a strong navy and a substantial expeditionary force.
Citizenship: Full Citizen. As the child of immigrants and somebody who spent substantial time in Germany growing up, I could not see any American denied the opportunity to vote and serve his or her country.
Religious: Secularism.

Foreign Policy: I promise to keep a vigilant eye on what I consider a serious threat in Europe: Communism. As the world sinks further and further into Depression, the Communist ideology may become more and more attractive. Nothing could be more inimical to the American way of life than a system which only pretends at democracy, insists it knows best for the people that many of them have never even met. I am equally concerned about Communism in South America.

Domestic Policy: I propose a moratorium on salary increases for all public officials and a program of voluntary reductions in the salaries of all elected officials. I would further propose extending this program to the private sectors. I would grant tax breaks to business owners who demonstrate the ability to create useful jobs for Americans.

If anybody has any questions, I will be available to answer questions.

Presidential Candidate (R) Simon von Ritter.

Will you leave the South alone?

Will you leave the South alone?

A very fair question. As my Vice President is a Southerner, I would consult with him before making any changes to Southern policy. If change is necessary -- and I would form a committee to determine this -- it would be gradual.

I would like to say that Mr. Ritter has my endorsement. Though we may not see eye-to-eye in foreign policy, he and I share the same hope for the private sector, a belief in a strong and able military, and a cautious use of executive power. Neither Vice President Jenkins nor President Ryan are so qualified or capable as my father's running mate, Simon von Ritter, one of the most successful politicians of his generation, and a man of great moral fibre, strong, evenhanded leadership, and sensible pragmatism... which is sorely lacking in today's Washington.

While he might not be the most desirable, Patrick Ryan's got my support, for now. Unrestrained capitalism has proven itself too chaotic, it must be brought to heel.
I urge you to reconsider Senator, if the people are to truly take back control of their government it is only radical and permanent change to the decadent capitalist system that will accomplish it! Join with me and together we can rule the country!

((In real life I am a Keynesianist-this is my character speaking :) ))

Why the hell would I vote for a no good socialist? We need to save capitalism from itself, not to replace it entirely with something far worse!

The Presidential Election of 1933

The National Conventions of 1932 were fraught with tension. In the Republican Convention, the question of how they had managed to lose a 12 year long grip on national politics hung in the air, and seeped through every statement in every debate. The majority of these debates were held between former Vice-President Simon Ritter and former Secretary of State Maurice Horshington.
Horshington argued that intervention was necessary, and failing to see that would cost the party another election; Ritter that the free market needed to incentivized to bring the nation back to prosperity, and the government should be downsized. In the end, it was perhaps inevitable that Ritter’s point of view would win out in the party of Jarvis and Sherman. He was nominated near-unanimously on the tenth ballot. Ease of nomination may have also been a fact in the Progressive National Convention, but the acceptance of party members who lost out was not.

1. Leonard Jenkins, Vice-President of the United States.

Unsurprisingly, Patrick Ryan was nominated for reelection on the first ballot. What was surprising was his choice of running mate; long-time Independent John F. Harrison. Ryan’s reasons for Harrison’s nomination as running mate were securing the largest state in the union, New York, gaining the support of moderate Republicans by bringing in a former businessman, and help in coming up with fresh solutions for the economic crisis. Vice-President Leonard Jenkins however, saw Harrison’s nomination as both a personal insult and an insult to the working man since Harrison was from a famous political family. Two days after the National Convention, he announced he would be running an independent campaign for president, saying that the previous administration had “abandoned the ideal of socialism, and the American people.”

The Candidates/Tickets of 1933

Election Manifesto of the Progressive Party

Presidential Candidate: Patrick Ryan
Vice-Presidential Candidate: John F. Harrison

We have been through an unprecedented depression these last few years. These have been difficult times for all and my Administration has taken many bold measures to restore our economy. We have had some success in mitigating the depth of this depression but much more needs to be done to make our economy strong and ensure that we never go through this again.

My running mate for this election will be the esteemed Governor of New York "Fitz" Harrison. Harrison was an integral part of President Terrance's Administration and is known for his expertise in financial matters. Our platform proposes very bold actions which we feel are essential to end this crisis. To regress to the Republicans proposal to eliminate away all economic regulations and reforms and refuse to take further measures to aid the economy would be a disaster for our nation.

Economic Plan

Bold action must be taken to reduce unemployment, stabilize and strengthen the banking system, aid our farmers and end this crisis.

- A national bank holiday, during which all banks will be subject to review by the Banking Regulatory Commission. Banks will not be allowed to reopen until they are deemed safe from insolvency by the BRC.
- Removal of the United States Dollar from the Gold Standard, for at least the duration of the current crisis, to allow the government flexibility in its response to the current depression.
- Extension and expansion of the projects begun by the National Public Works Act and of the general public works program implemented in the past three years.
- Lowering of income taxes to 5% to to spur spending and investments.
- Creation of a National Industrial Recovery Administration, to coordinate a system of tax incentives and subsidies for the stimulation of national industries.
- Increased cooperation between the government and Federal Reserve to ease American credit out of its current contracted state.
- Creation of farm subsidies for the struggling agricultural sector.

Foreign Policy

We must remain diligent against the threat of war from the installation of radical governments such as the German regime and instability in South America. We must work with our allies the UK and France to maintain peace and aid the global economy.

The Ryan-Harrison platform provides a detailed, active plan to lift our nation from these dark times. Vote Progressive and let us continue the progress and work we have begun.

Election Manifesto of the Republican Party

Presidential Candidate: Simon Ritter
Vice-Presidential Candidate: Constant Blancharde

Policies:

Economic:
Free Trade and Laissez Faire. As I said when I first ran for the nomination, we need less regulation in order to allow our workers -- the best in the world -- to compete with the Europeans and other nations on our own terms.

Military:
I am in favor of a strong navy and a substantial expeditionary force.

Election Manifesto of the True Labor Party

Presidential Candidate: Leonard Jenkins
Vice-Presidential Candidate:

Social Reform:
Segregation is one of the greatest evils to plague this great nation! It is not only a moral evil but a burden in such tough economic times as it ways down a large portion of the population and saddles them with unemployment, forcing them to rely on public assistance to survive. It must be stamped out if are country is to recover both in the welfare of our economy and of our soul.

Foreign Relations:
America should stay out of the business of the rest of the world, we must become a nation that is self-reliant, and we must never allow our boys to go over seas to fight in foreig conflicts that have nothing to do with us. It seems like there will be another war between the Autocratic Soviet Union and the Imperialist forces of Europe, we must remain neutral at all costs.

Economic:
The United States is in an interesting scenario as we have experimented with leftism and a Mixed Economy, however even under the reign of men like Hayden we were never truly socialistic. This shows that for the United States a new form of socialism must be implemented, a market based socialism. Business's will not be taken by the state but given to the people most capable of running them, the worker's. The business's will still operate on a profit and a market based system will be in place but the means of production will be owned by the true producers not rich parasites. We must also become entirely self-sufficient as a country not relying on trade and credit with the unstable banking systems of Europe

Military:
The military has grown to powerful, we must be able to defend our shores from foreign a threats and little else, however we should implement job training programs for soldiers and make sure they have help finding employment.

Short Term Solutions for the depression:
-Major Industrial build up in more rural areas of the country by the government to provide jobs.
-Enhance Farming Subsidies, farmers are the backbone of this nation.
-Raising taxes to 40% for the top Tax Brackets.
