Admiral Zepeds. YOu are mistaking my words. I am saying no to any coalition now, not later. I have always said I am open to talks with any party. Why would I stand no chance against teh Republicanos. We outnumber them 2-1.

I am a little confused by why you are attacking me on this. Firstly you say you dont like the republicanos and then you criticise me for not joining them. In earlier statements you made a point of saying we are a seperate party from them but again you attack me for not joining with them. Do you have another agenda here Sir. I have always been honest in my dealings and will continue to be. From the fact that you are wishing to initiate talks with the militant communists I would say that you are a little confused over your position. You decry the republicanos over state capatiism but want to talk toi the Communists? You are of course free to do what you wish, we are a party of freedoms unlike the Communists. But please sir stop with the attacks that are not based on sound reasoning.

Your friend

Presidente Andonie

I will take my time to think this over. I am very confused right now.

((I was away for a week, I missed lots of stuff))

((There won't be a coalition, right? Since the majority of the FNT is against a coalition with the CCP.))

((I think all the Communists have voted for a coalition with the FNT with me as leader (yay) and we outnumber the FNT. So I would guess there might be, but I'm not sure.))

((I think all the Communists have voted for a coalition with the FNT with me as leader (yay) and we outnumber the FNT. So I would guess there might be, but I'm not sure.))

(( not if there was not a majority of FNT people voting for a coalition and I dont think there was so my guess is no coalition))

While I have previously supported state capitalism, my platform as the Republicano nominee is Interventionism. Due to our growing industrial economy I have come to support a free market while allowing the government to intervene to support strategic industries and when the market sufferers a temporary crash. I also wish to look out for the workers to support them when the market crashes so that they are not put out of work through no fault of their own. But I no longer support state capitalism as my platform states.

Pedro Rivera - Republicano

I want to propose to rename the Partido Comunista de Chile to Partido Obrero Socialista de Chile (POSC). Because we are the true defenders of the workers and the only real proponents of socialism.

I find a lot in common with your policies sir. Clearly I believe in Laissez Faire and it has worked very well the past 5 years/ I would note though that at the last election I did try and implement unemployment Subsidies but was stopped by the upper house.

Presidente Andonie

"Comrade Acevedo, our struggle does not end with Socialism. It ends with true Communism. Renaming ourselves the Socialist Party merely gives the image that this is all we want. Socialism. I do not support such a changing of the Party's name."

The only real proponents of socialism? Excuse me good Sir, but that does not sound like a rational statement. The FNT has and always will stand for Socialism. Just because we refuse to use senseless violence to achieve our goals like you do does not mean that we are not proponents of Socialism.

The 1881 Conventions
The 1881 Primary season and Conventions were a tremendous spectacle for the Chilean political scene. In addition to five major parties, the most that Chile had ever before seen in its history, 1881 also saw the Congreso consider three measures of tremendous importance: the Argentina Question, the Guyana Conference, and the trial of Alejandro Cortez. The Guyana Conference was the most straightforward of these three measures: after a fierce battle in the Congreso between those who wished to see a South American Guyana and those who didn't wish to anger the great powers of the world, the Congress eventually passed the Guyana Conference Act, authorizing Minister Lorenzo Subercaseux to negotiate with Britain and France for the release of Guyana from their colonial possessions in South America. Subercaseux, beaten by the incumbent President Andonie for the Liberal nomination, traveled north to Caracas, where the conference was held and returned with news that he had secured promises from Britain and France to cede their Guyana possessions to Venezuela and Brazil, respectively. While many in the Congreso criticized Subercaseux for not securing an independent Guyanan state, he explained to his critics in private that the UK and France had only agreed to such a scheme because the UK believed they could control Venezuela, and France believed they could control Brazil. Both were uncertain who would assert control over a combined Guyanan state.

The Argentina Question was one of the most ominous developments in Chilean foreign policy since the Empire of the Andes' invasion of Bolivia, or so said its critics. Again after significant debate between the doves and hawks in the Congreso, the legislature issued a harshly worded resolution against Argentina, with the hawks promising to issue a declaration of war in the last days of the Andonie administration, to ensure that the next President (whoever he might be) would be a wartime President. This revelation was met in Argentina with alarm, but as the nation was unwilling to simply concede defeat to an old enemy, they could do little but wait for Chile's inevitable invasion.

Last but not least was the trial of President Alejandro Cortez, which received considerably more press than either of the primaries. Delayed in the courts for years, the former President finally came before the Congreso in 1880 to face trial, which overwhelmingly voted to convict him of treason against the Republic and conspiracy to overthrow the same. He was sentenced to death and hanged in the December of that year. As one cynical paper put it, "he was the first President to be accused of treason in three years." Another rebuked, "he was the first President to be executed in twenty."

The Primaries themselves took most of the fights to the conventions. Lorenzo Subercaseux was defeated by incumbent President Carlos Andonie by an overwhelming margin in the Liberal primary. Pedro Rivera similarly enjoyed overwhelming support over Jorge Roseno in the Republicanos' primary and defeated him with a considerable supermajority. The Nacionales primary was less clear, and suffered deadlock all the way to the convention. After several ballots and backroom meetings, both Sáez and Miramontes withdrew from the race in favor of Severino, who became the nominee immediately thereafter. Additionally, the Liberales received offers of coalition from both the FNT and the Republicanos but rejected both overwhelmingly, with the incumbent Carlos Andonie claiming that the Liberales were the largest party, and had no need for any such coalition.

The only coalition ticket of the season occurred between the Social FNT and the Comunistas, where each had an unopposed nominee. The Comunistas, with almost a stereotypical level of organization, all voted in favor of a coalition with the FNT and extended an offer for a joint convention to the socialists. The FNT, to contrast, had a more serious battle with the idea of a coalition, particularly as Sergio Gogolow opposed the measure (perhaps aware that he would lose the joint contest). Despite his objections, members of the FNT pointed out that the party would be inviable with its small electorate. At Gogolow's urging, the party first extended a coalition offer to the Liberales in the hopes that they would accept, but the answer was a sound rejection. The FNT then voted, over Gogolow's objections, for coalition with the Comunistas. The joint convention rapidly nominated Osvaldo Tamiuszski, the radical communist, as their joint nominee on the FNT-Comunista ticket.

I can use your older ones if you like. As soon as I get your platforms, we can start voting on President and Army Chief of Staff.

The 1881 Candidates

August_Borsig.jpg

Liberales Candidate: Carlos Andonie ((rudders10))

Pro Military/Pluralism/Laissez-Faire/Free Trade/Full Citizenship

Today we stand at a crossroads. We can carry on as we have the past 5 years with unprecedented growth economically, internationally and militarily or we can change course, sail into the unknown and unlikely experiments of Communism. By now you know my beliefs, I believe in freedom for all Chileans, freedom to do business as you want. Freedom in trade, religion and of course a strong military.
Economically Chile has prospered as never before under our Government. Taxes are lower there is full employment and people have the highest standard of living in South America if not the world. Under the Liberales coalition we have thrown the yoke of imperialism off South America and enjoy the envious gazes of our neighbours. We are strong with allies and friends around us and the strongest military we have ever had and the capacity to make it stronger. I promised last election growth in our navy. Something promised by all other previous Governments but delivered here.

Freedom must be for all though and as last term if the Upper House allows it I would look to introduce either a basic healthcare or unemployment package to protect those who the system fails.

Stay the course with us and Chile will continue to prosper and continue to be the envy of the world. Of course I must give credit to our friends in Government, both Republicanos and Tradicionales. I again hope to work with you as constructively as this term.

Vote Liberales, Vote for Freedom

Republicanos Candidate: Pedro Rivera ((atomicsoda))
Pro Military/Moralism/Interventionism/Protectionism/Limited Citizenship [1+0+1+0+1=3]

My vision for Chile is prosperity, stability and security. We must establish a stable democracy while making sure our economy is prosperous and we have a strong military to deter foreign aggression and remain independent of foreign influence.

Economy: Interventionism. I support a free economy while allowing to the government to support strategic industries, such as military industries and other strategic goods. I also support supporting industry and workers in the event of bad markets so that we have stability in our economy and workers do not lose their jobs. I support minimum safety standards in all workplaces and if the upper house will allow I will implement them.

Military: Pro-Military. We must maintain a strong military in order to deter foreign aggression and foreign influence and remain truly independent. I support expanding the Navy as well as supporting and encouraging military industries in Chile.

Trade: Protectionism. I support keeping the current low tariff as it is serving industry and the nation well. I do however believe that we must maintain the flexibility to raise tariffs if necessary due to war or to balance the budget.

Religion: Moralism. I support the traditional influence the Church has had on Chilean society and believe the Church should continue to have a central role in Chilean life.

Citizenship: Limited Citizenship. Immigration has been good for Chile and I will continue to support the rights of immigrants to come and settle in Chile. I believe that immigrants should assimilate into our culture if they wish to take a full role in Chilean society.

Nacionales Candidate: Valentin Severino ((Syriana))
Pro Military/Pluralism/Interventionism/Free Trade/Full Citizenship [1+1+1+1+2=6]

1. Maintain the expansion of the Chilean Navy. Our recent increase is unparalleled, but we still require a world-class navy to protect our coast and uphold the sovereignty of South America from the predatory attentions of foreign powers. It is essential that we have at least a fleet of ten vessels by the turn of the century. If possible, I would aim for more than that. A grand navy is the essential asset of any Great Power, and will give our voice power beyond South America. Similarly, our army on paper is impressive, but we must continue to augment our standing army so that we may remain unchallenged on the continent.

2. A foreign policy programme of anti-colonialism and South American solidarity. The OTLA now covers all of South America save Argentina, which will soon fall into its orbit. We have become the paramount protectors of South America. Such hegemony will require defending, both from the rival interests of the foreign empires and from the sabotage of the feuding North American states. We must continue to exert influence on our neighbours while looking beyond our borders. The United Provinces is the main objective: once we have wrested it from the political dominance of North America, Chilean political power shall flow unheeded into Central America and the Caribbean. With the solving of the Guyana Question, we will end the continued presence of foreign powers on the South American mainland.

3. Continuing the boom in the Chilean economy. As demonstrated, industry flourishes when left to its own devices. But we must intervene to ensure the maintenance of our economic expansion. Moreover, we must resolve labour disputes which threaten to undermine our prosperity, as evidenced in the Patagonia affair. We must uphold workers' rights without sacrificing industrial efficiency. This is best achieved through government arbitration in disputes. By these means, we can prevent further acts of sabotage and ensure the Chilean boom continues unimpeded.

I have served in both the previous governments, which have delivered these assets to the people. I will continue to deliver these assets if I am elected as President. I have served loyally and justly, and will continue to do so even in power. I will uphold the tenets of conservatism and save the Republic from the extremists forces that desire her downfall. Chile needs a leader of integrity and sound character, and I believe I am suited to the task. I hope you will all agree, and support my nomination as presidential candidate for the Partido Nacional.

¡Viva la República de los Chilenos!

FNT-Comunista Candidate: Osvaldo Tamiuszski ((tamius23))

((WHOOPS -- Sorry Osvaldo))

Planned Economy : For a long time the Chilean economy under laissez-faire capitalism left a lot to be desired, and even now is not completely satisfactory. The solution to this, therefore, is to forbid the capitalists constructing and managing factories, and turn it over to the state, which can run the economy on a national scale.

Atheism: Many people believe that the majority religion in Chile, Roman Catholicism, is an integral part of the nation's wellbeing. As a Mapuche animist I have that the people of the south are happy without the Christian faith and would be better off without attempts to convert them. Religion is a thing many people have died over, and we should not have the state sponsor this kind of thing.

Protectionism: This is a traditional Socialist policy. The country should not trade with everyone. Perhaps keeping our economy protected until we can compete with the world's larger economies.

Full Citizenship: Chile is a nation of immigrants. Nearly all of you in the Senate or your ancestors arrived in Chile in the last hundred years or so. How would you feel to be denied citizenship of our Republic because of that? We should encourage people to leave Europe and come to Chile, where they will be treated just as those who arrived from Europe in the last century or two, or even those who never came from Europe at all.

Pacifism: Chile has one of the world's largest armies. While a country should have an army to defend itself from foreign aggression, our army is sufficiently superior to our neighbours in South America that it does not warrant further expansion. We should also seek to stop petty disputes being resolved with violence amongst our sphere.

Army Chief of Staff Candidates:
Tarquino Zepeda ((thekinguter))

No, it was a copy/paste problem from the last Candidates post. Should be fixed now. I accidentally had you with Carnal's old platform, sorry about that.
