Perhaps ThunderHawk can link to a complete character list on the front page?

Already have, it's under Thread Essentials in the Contents post.

EDIT: Polls close in about an hour and a half, by the way.

I simply said I would consider Senor Tamzarian for a position. Did not Romano appoint conservative backers? Did not Badajoz appoint liberal backers? I have done nothing wrong, and I have made no promises.

That you have on your side anarchists, socialists, radicals, mad men, and murderers, I question your ideals, Minister Andonie. If you doubt my integrity, my honour, then perhaps you wish to resign your post as Minister of the Interior. I respect you, and believe you competent, but if you do not feel the same, I cannot tolerate such a view. I love difference of opinion, a questioning of my ideals, but a question of my integrity? That I cannot stand.

(If you ask me, Badajoz didnt reward the Liberales QUITE enough at the end.)

It seems de Santa shall be our first Democratically elected Presidente in the Sublime State of Chilean Republican Democracy for the Beauteous Peoples of the Southern Andes. It is good to see such Democracy in action, as opposed to the recent Democracy inaction we have had (see what I did there).

Rewarding followers makes sense either way. How would you propose forming a cabinet, popular election of everyone? Whats the point of electing a Presidente if he or she does not have control of their own cabinet?

Furthermore, are not the men I appointed competent? Senor Romano served in as the Minister of the Treasury from 1836 to 1845, and since 1856. He has proven to be an economic genius and is supremely capable. Alvarez served in the navy and has a strong sense of duty for Chile, as well as talent.

Senor Andonie, you yourself are a minister; are you not competent? You benefited from my 'favouritsm.'

Let me ask you this, how would any of you rectify this situation?

The 1866 Conventions
The Conventions of 1866, the first since the restoration of the Republic and with all-new parties, were treated with a brand new eye by the suddenly and newly enfranchised public. This effect particularly manifested itself in the Republicano field, where a record-breaking five candidates flooded in, four disputing the incumbent fifth for a shot at the Presidency of the Third Republic. The only other party organized enough to contest the Republicanos, the Socialistas, began small but with a competitive race, the vote fairly divided between two candidates.

The Republicano primary was certainly given more media exposure of the two, as many perceived that in this deeply divided primary De Santa Rosa would face serious challenges from his various competitors. Indeed he did, as Armin Tamzarian took an early lead over De Santa Rosa in the polls, with Alvarez, Andonie, and Gogołów receiving sufficiently meager support from the rest of the party to challenge neither of the leading two. The struggle would be between Tamzarian and De Santa Rosa primarily, and most of the other three bowed out with heads held high after the first few ballots. De Santa Rosa, however, would accrue significant support over the remainder of the conference and end the primary with more than twice as many ballots as Tamzarian, securing his nomination for another term as President of the Republic. De Santa Rosa concluded his primary campaign promising to form a government with his Socialistas opponents if he won.

The Socialista's primaries were one of great excitement as well, if not because of their competitiveness. The vote originally set between Carlos Carnal and Anselmo Galante was quickly called off when the latter withdrew just before the conference to avoid splitting the ticket; thus Carnal was declared the Socialista nominee. The points of interest during the conference were twofold: first, the Socialistas were expected to hold the loyalties of only a handful of electors, but nearly double the number arrived as the Socialista conference - and though they were stilled outnumbered by the Republicanos by most tallies, they had suddenly become a viable electoral force. Second was the party's decision to change its name to the Federación Nacional de Trabajadores (National Federation of Workers) on Galante's suggestion, also called the Federación, the Trabajadores, or the FNT for short. With this rebranding complete, the FNT charged headlong into their first electoral cycle, hoping to oust De Santa Rosa.

The last interesting point of the primary season was the expansion of the Franchise by the Congreso, who mandated that all adult male citizens (adult being the same as the age for military service) could vote once and only once and abolished the poll tax. This statue closed a loophole in many regional election laws that was allowing men of means to vote several times by paying the poll tax more than once. The Congreso hoped that this new action would satisfy many of the Radicals, who had begun to campaign vocally for an expanded franchise.

The 1866 Candidates

MonttJorge01.jpg

Republicanos Candidate: Antonio De Santa Rosa ((Riccardo93))

Pro Military/Pluralism/Laissez-Faire/Free Trade/Full Citizenship

On military affairs, I plan to focus more on the navy for this term. The army expanded exponentially and I feel it is strong enough to stand against any foe in this hemisphere. On matters of military reform, I will consider such issues, but will act on the will of the Congreso and on the advice of the commanders.

In terms of foreign policy, I have no plans of expansion; however, should the Congreso see fit to expand, I will see if the nation is capable of such a move, and act upon that. I hope largely to continue the cautious foreign policy that has ensured we are not obligated to other nations, whilst retaining close relations with them.

On matters economic, I shall stay the course, and let it be; let the market do what it does best. I hope to continue this policy of deregulation, support some reform (so long as it does no impair a free market), and, if possible, lower taxes on all social stratas.

On social issues, I will defer generally to the conservative members of the Partido Republicano. They have proven to be a strong bulwark for the Republic, and as such, cannot be ignored. I personally will favour certain reforms, but will only act with Congressional permission. I value this limitation on my power, and, as some have stated, will work to further devolve my powers to ensure another Cesar does not come to power.

If you all look at my record, I have preformed solidly. Be it in the field of battle, as the mayor of Santiago, leader of the Republicanos, or as President of this nation, I believe I have served Chile for the better. I hope that you all will stand with me for another five years, and that Chile will grow even more wealthy, more powerful, and more respected.

FNT Candidate: Carlos Juan Carnal ((Red Cesar))

Anti Military/Secularism/State Capitalism/Protectionism/Full Citizenship

I support State Capitalism and Protectionism: Capitalists can simply not be trusted to keep the well being of the workers above their own greedy ambition! As well, I support Protectionism for the reason that foreign nations cannot be trusted to keep the interests of our people to heart! I plan to initiate an industrial plan, making Chile a prosperous nation for the well being of the workers, farmers, and laborers throughout our country!

Secularism and Full Citizenship: No man should be declined entry to our nation based upon race, religion, or nationality. Chile welcomes all immigrants with open arms! I also will work diligently to ensure that the separation of Church and State remains as such, and the influence of the Catholic church is curtailed as much as possible on a political level.

Anti-Military: I propose that the level of the armed forces of our nation are adequate for the time being, and shall not be increased during my term. I as well would like to put ahead several bills proposed by my friends in the senate, determining who should be in charge of the separate armies of the republic.

VOTE! I need your vote for either De Santa Rosa or Carnal. If you vote by party, I will pair your vote to the corresponding ticket.

As always, remember to bold your votes or they might not be counted.

If you're a candidate and you want to change your platform or picture from the above, just let me know.

A sample ballot would look like:
President: Abstain

This poll will end at 6:00 PST on the 9th (two days) or if 25 votes are reached before that.

Again, kudos to anyone who knows who the portraits are really of without looking it up.

((Hmmm, fewer votes against me... cool))

I want to thank all my supporters during the primaries and those who are voting for me in the general election. We must continue on this path, this road to liberty, to prosperity.

Why vote? Both candidates are the same. They may pretend they are different, that they are opposed to eachother, but they both seek to entrap the people of Chile within the hands of government. Even were this not true, Santa Rosa would still win. There is only one true candidate, and when there is only one candidate then the people must either revere him unconditionally or there is dictatorship, and I highly doubt Santa Rosa is anywhere near the complete reverence required.

We send a message by not voting. We send a message that we will not be backed into a corner, that we know this is nothing but a sham, a lie, that we are not hypnotized like all the other blind sheep who follow without thought.

"I ask all those who oppose a complete monopoly on power by the Republicanos to please join me in this election, for the well being of diversity among our gentle republic."

-Senator Carlos Carnal

If by entrap the people of Chile, you mean limit the power of government, support the rule of law, liberalize the nation, expand the voting franchise to all Chileans, and bring about unprecedented wealth, then yes I agree with you. I fail to see where my administration has abused power; I have worked with the Congreso, and with parties that hold either little support, views radically different from my own, or both. That I have worked to bring all factions into this government to better lead Chile, while not compromising on my love of liberty and free markets, is a good reason, in my opinion, to vote for the Republicanos.

However, seeing how you are a madman, an agitator, and a murderer, I suppose I shouldn't bother convincing you of my merits and focus on seizing men like you (not agitators, they're fine, but murderers, no).

((TH, I have no idea who my picture is...))

((I certainly you're not a murderer Carnal... though with that name...

Yes it was directed at Seek; you;re not an agitator are you? I thought they couldn't run for office...))

I killed Carrow because you could not muster the guts to hang him. I killed him because he betrayed the people of Chile, because without him Roseno would never have taken power, and because he is a turncoat who flees at the first sign of trouble. He knew blood was in the water, he knew he would see his head on a pike if he sided with the Emperor, so he abandoned the Empire. I could at the very least have respected him if he fought to the bitter end-- but he didn't. He betrayed the Empire as quickly as he betrayed the Republic, and had the opportunity to do so once more arisen he would've disestablished the Republic again.

I did what you could not, because you are corrupt, because you chose a scumbag over Chile.
