I like the switserland idea best so far, to be honest :)

Poland can into space!

The Fourth Reich - Germany in Space with Diplomacy.

A "Nazi Moon Base" theme would be cool, and would explain the low starting population. I'm not sure it fits with a Republican government, though.

In my conventional-start games, I usually start in 1947 or '48, with the real-world population for that period. The background concept is, of course, that the Roswell Incident really was a crashed UFO, and that humanity learmed its first clues about Trans-Newtonian Physics from the wreckage.

I also favor somewhat longer terms for President (or Consul, or whatever)... especially in the early game, where an in-game year can be played out in a few minutes.

Perhaps every ten (or twenty) years, we could vote on changing the length of the term mandate... so that our first few Consuls might have five-year terms, the next several Consuls might have three-year terms, then two year terms from then on.

I think we should have ceremonial roles for the casual participant that want to RP little bits here and there but not get into the nitty gritty aswell. Lord Mayor Style roles, Ducal Titles (Modern) maybe even a constitutional monarch/president.

For background story: In the near future, there's some sort of global catastrophe (or cluster of catastrophes) that weakens and destabilizes most of the world. As traditional governments fail to adapt, a cabal of powerful people worldwide forms a shadow government, based in Switzerland (as that's where their money is stashed and the shell companies that own the world are based out of). This secret society is called the Paradox, because the only way to save civilization and restore stability is by undermining, destabilizing, and replacing the tottering institutions of the world. We meet in secret, puppeteering the world through our various power bases in the media, financial markets, religious institutions, etc. We pursue a future in space in order to solve the world's increasing resource problems and as an outlet for our mushrooming population. Eventually we go public and the world hails us as heroes and saviors. They never realize we helped create/ worsen some of the problems we then solve.

The Fourth Reich - Germany in Space with Diplomacy.

Take the back story and replace Switzerland with Germany, awesomeness guaranteed!

And titles, we shall have titles

I like the Swiss. Alternately, for a Con-Mon, we can go all British, lifting ourselves out of the global economic crisis with a stiff-upper-lip and a spot of tea, wot wot.

Fourth Reich has ominous overtones. If we go with a Germany-based theme, lets not use that term, mmmkay?

I'm for my own idea, shockingly. :D

Noted.

Poland can into Space - Yet I think Poland is not the place to go. At least not until they join us.....

And I can follow your point regarding a conventional game and how it should be setup. And with that also the link to the lenght of the term. I'm thinking 4 years for the first while and when we get to a point to be determined by vote, we'll cut it to 2 years.

I think we should have ceremonial roles for the casual participant that want to RP little bits here and there but not get into the nitty gritty aswell. Lord Mayor Style roles, Ducal Titles (Modern) maybe even a constitutional monarch/president.

Roles - Can be an interesting concept. Are you thinking about anything specific in this regard?

Mr. Santiago, Baron of Bavaria - Lord Blue Emu - Count of Halifax etc... I like it!

I like the Swiss. Alternately, for a Con-Mon, we can go all British, lifting ourselves out of the global economic crisis with a stiff-upper-lip and a spot of tea, wot wot.

Swiss and Brits. It looks like the road at the moment is towards the Swiss.

I'm for my own idea, shockingly. :D

Fourth Reich is out then. Swiss looks to be the way to go... Fits nicely with the theme of the diplomatic union of Earth while remaining small and....... Manipulative! Going to be interesting seting things up though. However, a secret society might go well together with the titles and roles.....

Something to think about that's for sure.

Ok, what I'm going to be working towards story wise at the moment:

Major Financial collapse of the world economy as well as a solar storm which throws the Earth tech base into ruins. Millions starve and amidst the Chaos the Scientists from Cern and their link to a secret society promises humanity a better future with a Feudal TN Republic. Councilors should then select an area they can feudaly rule and RP. Diplomats will then work to unite Humanity while exploration of the universe begins!

Roles - Can be an interesting concept. Are you thinking about anything specific in this regard?

Well with this last game (which by the way i re-read and found it a very good read, especially my last hurrar on the BC in i think wolf 359) i very much enjoyed your odd RP stories. It gave it flavour and something to grab on to as a story. its all well and good having a theme, but a dedicated RP of the smaller things in the empire like stories of the people will add to the overall expierence. In that regard you could have things like say for Con Mon/Pre you could have Ship openings, unveiling (but not deciding) of assignments and promotions, and you could also have a yearly address to parliament/congress allowing the "players" of the game to focus on Game updates, planning and Actual Ship design.. which by the way should automatically be given to Blue Emu for his rediculous designs during the discussions. This game should be the Hollywood version of Aurora.. Impractical ship design who cares.. does it look frickin sweet... build it! I hark back to i think Vainglory's 1M tonne behemoth design as the sort of inspiration we should be having with this one.

By the way as i never rounded it off as you said no plans were made:

Vice Admiral Adamus retired on the Colony of Mars not long after his retirement where he found himself a target for the infamous fraudstar Steve Grazier and lost thousands to his ponzy scam. Adamus later died doing what he did best, drinking whiskey dreaming of the day he would save the world... but never quite realising it.

Hmm... So you want a ridiculous design.... I had an idea of something that is utterly impractical ever to build. But I'll design it anyway and share it with you.

Wets himself in anticipation..

Blame Adamus for this and.... BEHOLD! TROY!!!!!

Perhaps an aristocracy descended from the remaining generals who reestablished order after the old governments of the Earth perished because of World War III. Trans-Newt tech has helped restore much of the Earth after a century and a half of the Tribunal's, humankind live in vast megacities that have grown out of their initial military governed protective hubs mostly in Central Africa (where most trans-newst are found) but elsewhere as well. The beginning of the game the players can either be aristocrats or political leaders of the lower classes where the Chairman of the Tribunal has called an emergency session to discuss the future of the species and among other things possibly write a constitution to appease the prole classes.

Overview of the Tribunal Government:

Originally the remnent that founded the Tribunal intended to build a global democratic state but corruption and assassination has riddled its history creating a system where sheer military clout often determines leadership. Early leaders however established the Congress where the civilians could voice their concerns and complaints but they were given no legal rights or power. Controlled by the Brass a vast military aristocracy the Tribunal is the ultimate seat of power dominated by those with the most wealth and soldiers. The Brass are typically highly educated and have received the best of what technology can offer in mental and body modifications but have become isolated from the majority of humanity and live in severe excess.

The Chairman stands at the top of the Brass hierarchy possessing almost dictatorial powers, a position obtained usually by violent coup. Beneath the chairman is the Tribunal, an assembly of the Brass who controls territory throughout the world and provides the Chairman with funds and troops in exchange for political favors. Of course under the Tribunal is the Congress, the representatives of the masses who currently are holding strike throughout the world demanding legal power.

Players can be an aristocrat or a leader in the Congress or have ceremonial roles but the reality is that the Tribunal will not survive and reforms must be enacted before we can venture into the stars.

Tribunal Society:

There are a handful of so called Hubs across the planet with populations exceeding twenty million. Workers labor in the trans-newt mines and in factories for food and virch rations. Universal education is limited to literacy and technical skills but there are a few proles who have become scientists and professionals through emergency talent conscription programs over the years. Only Brass are allowed to be officers, lawyers, and administrators however. The Brass are suffering from these policies as their comparatively few numbers are strained under the weight of managing humankind.

Proles labor 8-12 hours a day but a proposed increase to 15 hours has sparked the current political crisis. Free time is spent in the virch centres where people escape into fantasy worlds designed by virch artists paid by the state. When not engulfed in virch realities the people engage in mass parties, searching for narcotics that may or may not be supplied by the state to weaken the populace, and follow popular arena combat and sports. Organized crime is rampant but mob bosses are seen as heroes fighting against the tyranny of the Tribunal and their draconian laws. Life in the Hubs is crowded but infrastructure is efficiently placed to maximize production and labor movement.

Average IQ of Brass is 180, average IQ of a prole is 120. Health is a paramount concern of the government and therefore gengineers remove bad genes before birth such as the need for sleep, improved cell reproduction to slow the aging process, and strength/stamina enhancements. Recently studies has shown that the Tribunal's labor improvement campaigns have reached to 64% of the entire population.

Interesting concepts. I'll think over whether to include some of these ideas... :)

I knew I forgot something....... ;) - The original design concept was a Orion Drive and a LOT bigger! I'll let you find the place where it comes from yourself!

If i was to guess... is this the Battlestar Galactica?! [/drool]

If i was to guess... is this the Battlestar Galactica?! [/drool]
That is my guess also. Though the cylons would have easily overwhelmed her at that speed.

It is not Galactica. The original concept is described as 2,2 trillion tons.

I think I know the source, but I cheated and looked up uses of the Orion drive in fiction because I couldn't figure it out on my own, so I'm pretty sure I don't count. To be fair, I don't really read that author's work all that much, or really at all, for all that the Baen Free Library includes several works by him. If I've got it right, the name of the station is itself a direct carry-over as well, right?

erm yeh really dont know this then. Enterprise?

Enterprise..... Pfft!!! This thing was built to take down Rangoran Assault Vectors, who are 1 km wide and 10 km long!

Troy and her sister Thermopylae are the guardians of Sol. Malta being the third of the class and 3 more are in various stages of construction.

Construction takes place by taking an Nickel-Iron asteroid and Balloning (mine a hole to the center, trap a comet or similar ice ball into the hole, plug it up and start heating it). Result is a Troy Class Battlestation. 9 KM in Diameter with 1,5 km thick Iron Walls.

Troy and Thermopylae are currently operational, but is still under construction. They are planned to end as follows:

Each Battlestation is devided in 6 sections where 5 of them are battle worthy and the sixth being "The Door and The Drive". Each Sector holds a magazine of 250.000 Thunderbolt Penetrator Missiles capable of both AM and AS duty. With 100 tubes and a fire range of 1 per tube per second each Battlestation can put around 500 Missiles in space per second when completed. For comparison a Rangoran Assault Vector carries 9.000 missiles.
